How to support a dying friend?
Question by Wildflower: How to support a dying friend?
I have a friend who was diagnosed with lung cancer and has refused treatment… We are very close, and I was the first person he told. At this point, he doesn’t want anyone else to know, doesn’t want to talk about it, and says he just wants to live until he dies…
I truly am at a loss on how best to support him in this and what to do… he has teenage children which he needs to be planning for and helping them to cope, in my opinion, though he has said he will not tell them or anyone else.
I mean, I feel so silly talking about the weather or whatever, when I know that he’s on a limited timeline…
Advice?
I’ve known him for 20 years… it is a close friendship.

Answer by janged
This will be difficult-but you should encourage him to make sure all of him affairs are in order. For instance his will etc for the children. He could even arrange and pay for his funeral now and then it will be easier for the children to cope. Encourage him to be responsible to the children as survivors and even plan for their care after he is gone. Perhaps a family member would take care of them. He needs to face these things now his time is very limited.

Should I get a breast cancer support tattoo?
Question by steveheremd: Should I get a breast cancer support tattoo?
As a show of support for a family member who is going through breast cancer treatment, some of the other family members (My wife, daughter and niece) are discussing geting a small pink ribbon tattoo as show of support. How about for me? I have no tattoos right now but I have donated to the Komen Breast Cancer foundation for years, walked/run in the race for the cure multiple times and have a family history of cancer. With genetics the way they are, my wife and daughter are probable canidates to be affected by breast cancer. My daughter kinda gave me a look when I said that I wanted to participate, like maybe it should be a girl thing. What do you think? Maybe right back of shoulder?

Family: Joe Paterno in serious condition, inspired by support

State College, Pennsylvania (CNN) — Throngs of Penn State students gathered in front of a statue of Joe Paterno early Sunday, braving freezing temperatures to pay tribute to the ailing legendary ex-coach. Some shoveled snow so others could walk up and touch Paterno’s outstretched hand on the statue. Paterno, 85, was in serious condition at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania, after suffering from lung cancer and a broken pelvis. “Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious,” family spokesman Dan McGinn said Saturday. “His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.” Relatives said Paterno, 85, was able to communicate Saturday night. Jay Paterno tweeted that he drove by the statue late Saturday night. “Just told my Dad about all the love & support — inspiring him,” he wrote. His brother, Scott, sent tweets saying a report their father had died were “wrong.” The family was upset about the misinformation, a source close to them said. Media falsely report Paterno’s death Several websites that reported Saturday night that Paterno had died later apologized for the error, including the Penn State student news website Onward State, the first to report the erroneous information. “To the Penn State community and to the Paterno family most of all, I could not be more sorry for the emotional …

cystic fibrosis research please support
Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser for cystic fibrosis research and care and celebrating its 45th anniversary. For more than four decades, student ‘shiners’ have taken part in Shinerama activities learning more about cystic fibrosis, meeting lifelong friends and having the chance to be part of something amazing. In 2009, as a way to celebrate the anniversary – more than 35000 students, friends and Shinerama alumni across Canada are going to try to raise million dollars to help find a cure or an effective control for CF! We can show everyone that working together we can make a difference. Cystic fibrosis is (CF) is a fatal, inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the lungs and digestive systems of its young victims. In Canada, over 3500 children and young adults have CF, and more than a million Canadians carry the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis. Despite aggressive treatment, lung infection and its complications eventually claim the life of virtually every person with CF. When Shinerama began in 1964, most kids with CF did not live long enough to attend kindergarten, but now thanks to research and treatment there is real hope that those living with CF can go to school, have a career and start a family. Shinerama is a great tradition, the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) is a great organization and fighting CF is a great cause so it is a WIN-WIN situation so please support me and the 2009 Shinerama campaign so someday when …

How do I show support for my child’s daycare provider AND ask if she still plans to continue working?
Question by frankie: How do I show support for my child’s daycare provider AND ask if she still plans to continue working?
My home daycare provider’s husband was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer last week. It is a very small center with only 4 young children. My daughter (1year old) has been under this woman’s care for the last 9 months and her husband is retired so while he doesn’t help care for the children he does interact with them quiet a bit. I wanted to do something nice but I am at a loss for what would be appropriate. This woman does an excellent job with my daughter and I am assuming that any day she will be cancelling our contract to take care of her husband’s medical needs. I don’t want to seem insensitive and bluntly ask if she plans to continue to work but I need to know to arrange childcare. How long would you wait to ask what the family’s plans are? Would you do something nice to show support?
Best answer:
Answer by Mallory
Maybe she will still continue to work? Medical bills can get expensive.
I’m sure she will let you know if she is planning to close her daycare. It is her business and she is a professional. She wouldn’t just leave you high and dry after paying her for 9 months.

Q&A: Cancer support question – boyfriend’s father?
Question by : Cancer support question – boyfriend’s father?
My boyfriend’s father has cancer. He has just had some tests and has multiple tumors in his stomach and lesions on his lungs, etc. Basically, the outlook is awful. He was given 2 months to live by the doctors.
I’m trying to be there for my boyfriend, he lives far away, so I can’t be there physically, but I’m trying to be as supportive as I can….I am available for him 24/7 to chat, but I’m wondering if anyone else has ideas of what I can do to be supportive. I’ve never lost anyone close to me, and I’ve never been a support for someone who’s lost someone, so I’m not 100% sure what to do. Mostly I’ve been letting him speak his mind and telling him I love him, but a lot of the time I feel like I don’t know what to say. I love him tons and want to help him get through this rough time.
Any ideas? How have you helped a loved one go through losing a family member?

Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn’t there equal support for prostate cancer ?
Question by Mr. Answer: Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn’t there equal support for prostate cancer ?
Breast Cancer out paced prostate cancer research $ 548mill to $ 306 mill according to NCI(National Cancer Institute). Even though there are more diagnoses Prostate Cancer than Breast Cancer by 230,110 new cases to 215,990( www.cancer.org/downloads/MED/Page4.pdf). There fundraisers for breast cancer like the pink ribbon fundraiser which is great but where is the ribbon for prostate cancer ? There are telethons for breast cancer, 10k runs for breast cancer, collection on airline flights for breast cancer. There isn’t equal support for prostate cancer even though prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. Why ?Why do we care more about women than men? Does anybody find this disturbing ?
Best answer:
Answer by S P
Because breasts generally get more attention in day-to-day lives than prostates? I’ve met women who don’t even know where the prostate is (can’t say I blame them for not knowing, lacking one, and all). How many guys do you know who don’t know where breasts are?

Q&A: Does it annoy you when we are expected to support people who dug their own holes?
Question by Whiskey Tango Foxtrot: Does it annoy you when we are expected to support people who dug their own holes?
For instance, a person who smoked 2 packs a day and now has lung cancer or some respitory disease, or a person who ate themselves up to 500 pounds, blew out their knees, and now can’t work, or an alchoholic who drank like a fish and now needs a transplant. Here are these people who made their choices, and now we have to pay to support them, pay for their medical care, and their medicine? If I decide to drive without insurance, I pay for the consequences. What about these people?
