Dr. Caligiuri talks about allocating resources to win the fight against cancer
Dr. Michael Caligiuri, MD, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, on allocating resources to win the fight against cancer. It was a little simpler with AIDS and HIV because there was one virus that caused the disease. Cancer, each type of cancer, one goes through the organ systems brain cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer each type has at least 100 causes. So, understanding each of those causes just like we understood that virus and then attacking it with knowledge with the pharmaceutical industry, with the government agencies, NIH, etc. is the way we have to go. So you got over 1000 causes of cancer, so itll take longer. But the same principles apply as applied to that single cause of HIV. It’s just more complex, it’s more heterogeneous, it’s more mixed. But we can have scientists working on each of those causes and come up with ways to detect it earlier, ways to prevent it and ultimately ways to treat it. There are over 1000 causes, so we need a thousandfold greater effort. At the biology, at the detection, at the prevention and the treatment. And right now our government is not doing that.
This presentation describes the remarkable new clinical discoveries being made concerning Vitamin D, and the vitamin’s importance for good health. Sunshine is an effective natural provider of Vitamin D that is now being reconsidered. As a leading UK newspaper recently reported (Dec. 2010): “Experts have overturned decades of advice by urging people to go out in the midday sun without sunblock.” (Source: www.telegraph.co.uk Sun exposure triggers the release of serotonin (which lifts mood), beta-endorphins (which yield pleasurable feelings), and dopamine (associated with the reward system in the brain). So, it is reasonable to ask: Why would the body be rewarding you for doing something harmful? Our modern ways of living have had severe consequences. In prehistory, the nearer you lived to the equator, the darker you were. It is believed that the principal reason we developed different skin colors was so that, as man migrated from Africa, the correct amount of vitamin D would be maintained in the body. (“Northern populations experienced positive selection for lighter skin due to the increased production of vitamin D from sunlight and the genes for darker skin disappeared from these populations.” Wikipedia/ Skin Color) If so, this tell us that having the correct level of vitamin D level in the body must be vitally important. Bear in mind that it is only in the last two centuries that we stopped living outdoors. For example, consider the following: Percentage of the US …

FELA Lawyer in Virginia Talks about Mesothelioma Cases
www.hsinjurylaw.com . Virginia FELA lawyer Rick Shapiro talked about his strategy when representing a railroad worker who has been stricken with the terrible lung cancer, mesothelioma. Many lawyers call on oncologists to testify for the rail worker, but Rick also calls on the nurse who administered chemotherapy to the worker. This is because the nurse probably has the ability to better explain the rail worker’s story and the difficulties associated with going through a round of chemotherapy treatment.

Q&A: Quincy Jones talks about MJs appearance…?
Question by His P.Y.T <3: Quincy Jones talks about MJs appearance…?
I saw this interview on some news channel i looked for the video but i can’t find it but here is the dialouge. He seems to be bitter. How do you feel about this?
Interviewer: You were there to witness the strange evolution in Michael’s appearance. Did you ever step in and saying anything about it?
Quincy: Oh, we talked about it all the time. But he’d come up with, “Man, I promise you I have this disease,” and so forth, and “I have a blister on my lungs,” and all that kind of b.s. It’s hard, because Michael’s a Virgo, man—he’s very set in his ways. You can’t talk him out of it. Chemical peels and all that stuff.
Interviewer: Did you believe him about the disease?
Quincy: I don’t believe in any of that bullshit, no. No. Never. I’ve been around junkies and stuff all my life. I’ve heard every excuse. It’s like smokers—”I only smoke when I drink” and all that stuff. But it’s bullshit. You’re justifying something that’s destructive to your existence. It’s crazy. I mean, I came up with Ray Charles, man. You know, nobody gonna pull no wool over my eyes. He did heroin 20 years! Come on. And black coffee and gin for 40 years. But when he called me to come over to see him when he was in the hospital on his way out, man, he had emphysema, hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver, and five malignant tumors. Please, man! I’ve been around this all my life. So it’s hard for somebody to pull the wool over my eyes. But when somebody’s hell-bent on it, you can’t stop ‘em.
Interviewer: But it must’ve been so disturbing to see Michael’s face turn into what it turned into.
Quincy: It’s ridiculous, man! Chemical peels and all of it. And I don’t understand it. But he obviously didn’t want to be black.
Interviewer: Is that what it was?
Quincy: Well, what do you think? You see his kids?
Interviewer: Did you ever discuss it? Did you ever ask, “Michael, don’t you want to be a black man?”
Quincy: No, no, no, please. That’s not the way you do it.
Interviewer: But he was beautiful before?
Quincy: Man, he was the most gorgeous guy.
Interviewer: But he seemed to have some deep-seated issue with how he looked?
Quincy: Well, that comes about a certain way. I’m not sure how it happens. I’m just a musician and a record producer. I’m not a psychiatrist. I don’t understand all that stuff. We all got problems. But there’s a great book out called Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart. Did you see that? That book says the statute of limitations has expired on all childhood traumas. Get your stuff together and get on with your life, man. Stop whinin’ about what’s wrong, because everybody’s had a rough time, in one way or another.

Dr. Edwin Silverman talks about COPDGene and importance of clinical research participation
In this video—presented by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health—NHLBI grantee Dr. Edwin Silverman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston talks about COPD Gene, which he runs with Dr. James Crapo of National Jewish Health in Denver, and about the importance of participation in clinical studies. COPD Gene is a study of more than 10000 volunteers across the country who are undergoing genetic assessment, state-of-the-art CAT scan imaging, breathing tests and other measurements in order to better understand why some people get COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and others don’t. The goal is to identify the genes that play a role in the development of COPD and to ultimately improve the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. “This research would not have been possible without the incredible support from the general population,” said Dr. Silverman. “If we hadn’t had enthusiastic support from our volunteers who gave up their own time to come in, get a CAT scan, go through an extensive array of tests with breathing tests and walk tests and a long list of questionnaires, if they hadn’t been willing to do that, we just couldn’t do the work. “So I think that people need to understand that medical research isn’t something that happens out there by other people. If they want new medical discoveries, they should really consider getting involved. They should consider being part of clinical trials, consider …
