Targeting death receptors in chemo-resistant cancer cells
Prof Patrick Johnston, Centre for Cancer Research & Cell Biology, Queen’s University Belfast, discusses his work targeting the BCL2 protein family and other inhibitors of cell apoptosis in order to prevent cancer cells resisting chemotherapy. Agents such as Obatoclax, ABT243 and proteins such as c-FLIP. For cancers such as lung, prostate, breast and ovarian.
AACR 2011: Combination therapy targeting MEK and PI3K pathways shows anti-tumour activity

Dr Johanna Bendell – Sarah Cannon Research Institute, Nashville, USA. The combination of two compounds that inhibit two of the most frequently mutated cancer pathways is showing promise in an ongoing Phase I trial. The research, presented by Dr Johanna Bendell, tests a combination of GDC-0973, which inhibits MEK1/2 and GDC-0941, which inhibits PI3K. The patients received a combination of different doses of GDC-0973 and GDC-0941; these drug combinations were well tolerated and only produced with mild side effects. Several patients demonstrated decreases in tumour size, including two patients with melanoma, one with prostate cancer and two with non-small cell lung cancer. It is hoped that these targeted treatments will eventually help clinicians treat cancers more effectively and will produce fewer adverse effects than current therapies.

Coast Capital Savings Proudly Sponsors COPS FOR CANCER.
Help us help the kids.
We are proud to be the official Tour Sponsor of the 2009 Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer tour, a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and local police agencies to raise funds for research into paediatric cancer research, programs and camps like Camp Goodtimes.
When does the campaign start?
We’re excited to kick off our annual fundraising campaign for this important cause on Wednesday, August 19. The campaign will run until Saturday, October 3. Keep your eyes peeled for more information at a branch near you this August.
Thanks in part to the generosity of our staff and members, hundreds of BC children living with cancer had the opportunity to attend Camp Goodtimes last year. For these children, Camp Goodtimes is a special place, providing them with the opportunity to just be kids and to be around other children with cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer tour is our largest corporate fundraiser and to date weâve raised a whopping .5 million for this cause. In 2008, our staff raised more than 8,000 through fundraisers such as head shaves, karaoke contests, bake sales, and more.

Cancer treatment is depending more and more today on specific factors of a patient’s tumor, including gene mutations, or proteins that are commonly typical of certain cancer cells, rather than focusing on where in the body the cancer started. Before, treatment was based on finding where in the body the cancer originated, such as the breast or lung. Targeted therapy is all about the cancer’s …
