20000 Dead, 120000 Dying.. is this Terrorism? Would have Union Carbide survived if this happened in the west?
Question by Muslim: 20000 Dead, 120000 Dying.. is this Terrorism? Would have Union Carbide survived if this happened in the west?
Bhopal – India: In December 1984, a holding tank with 43 tonnes of stored MIC overheated and released toxic heavier-than-air MIC gas mixture, which rolled along the ground through the surrounding streets. The transportation system in the city collapsed and many people were trampled trying to escape. Around 500,000 people were exposed to the leaking tables. Approximately 20,000, to this date, are believed to have died as a result; on average, roughly one person dies every day from the effects. Over 120,000 continue to suffer and are dying from the effects of the disaster, such as breathing difficulties, cancer, serious birth-defects, blindness, gynaecological complications and other related problems.

Jay: Thank you for your insight on the meaning of the word terrorism, and i did Wiki that as you suggested, perhaps you should have done what you preached. You didn’t, so let me quote the article:
“Union Carbide has never publicly named or identified the employee it claims sabotaged its Bhopal plant or attempted to prosecute.”
Jay
Parents walk in and immediately their child runs shouting IT WASN’T ME! I DID NOT BREAK IT! Defending himself even though he was not questioned. “You Jay Being the child in this case”
1- In the original question I gave a link to the entire article. No hidden details
2- When I quoted a specific segment, I did so specifically to answer your argument on the meaning of terrorism. It was clear that this is from the SAME source
3- No omissions. As the link is there for all to read article in its entirety
4- Your “claim” of an “apparent” purpose is “trashed” simply because the question was clear as well as the source
5- I would NOT have readers believe anything. It is the readers prerogative to read the article (or other sources) contemplate the circumstances, and answer the explicit question, rather than read between the lines dreaming up “apparent purposes” and conspiracy theories
Wake up McCarthy.. sorry JAY…. Despite of what you think… Not everyone is a Stalin out to get you
Jay
Thank you for the 2 points the rest of your input is just noise.
Call you and America what I like? Or call us and OUR America what I like?
Why assume that I am not an American? just because of my Nick? That’s weak Jay.. weak! My nick should not affect your focus
You get the best answer as i am sure you will kick yourself for being so defensive.. ouch!
This question was intentionally asked under Corporations as my intention is to get feedback from a corporate focus rather than just a political one
My opinion
I don’t think it is terrorism
I don’t think Union Carbide would have survived
I do believe that international corporations have a responsibility to adhere to the higher of standards of operation, between how they operate in their home country, or accepted to operate in the country of operation
“Transfer of Knowledge” should be the goal rather than Abuse of Ignorance
I agree that the ultimate responsibility in making sure that this is followed is with the host country

The difference is that it was not intentional. If you understand what terrorism is then you would know this. Wiki that one will you?
Would Union Carbide have survived in the West? Probably so, but the risks of it happening here are far lower for a variety of reasons. Better engineers, better labor laws etc. You have to remember that when any company (be it Russian, American, British, French, Japanese etc) sets up a plant they adhere to the strictest regulations in the area. Those were met and regrettably- it wasn’t enough.
My point is this- that any nation should care enough for it’s people to insist on the absolute best engineering and training available so that tragedies like these are far fewer.
Response-
Since we’re quoting the article why dont we include the ENTIRE quote and list our source?
“Union Carbide has never publicly named or identified the employee it claims sabotaged its Bhopal plant or attempted to prosecute. Nevertheless, on the company’s Bhopal Information Center website, Carbide claims that “the Indian authorities are well aware of the identity of the employee and the nature of the evidence against him”.
I find it amusing that you would NOT use that sentence that immediately follows- especially since it serves to trash your apparent purpose of this question. But omission of facts is all part of the program. You would have readers believe that American personnel were completely responsible for this tragedy and that an American intentionally did the dirty work to kill all these people. (Stalin and Goebbels worked this sort of propaganda well- I see you know the meaning of this word.)
I said it before and I’ll say it again. If the govenment of a country cares enough to create, enforce and insist on regulations to protect it’s own people tragedies like this would be prevented.
I WILL agree that these people died needlessly. I will agree that the person who was responsible should be brought to justice. The question is- why has India’s law enforcement not stepped up to the plate to do what we must believe is it’s duty?
Here we go again-
The old- it’s not me, it’s you thing. I’m even more amused by your response to me. This has all been some misunderstanding- you’re just giving a history lesson right? And the whole of issue of terrorism and what would have happened IF it had occurred in the west was rhetorical then?
It looks like someone else has spoken and agreed with me on my two points.
1) It was not terrorism
2) If anyone needs to do anything about it, it should be India.
Call me and America whatever you like. Your B.S. won’t sell here.

Why Do Our U.S. Tax Dollars Continue To Support Terrorism?
Question by Richard V: Why Do Our U.S. Tax Dollars Continue To Support Terrorism?
3 Billion Dollars in U.S. Military Aid goes to Israel every year for F-16s, Apache attack helicoptors, Hellfire Missiles and other weapons used to kill over 500 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in one week.
Testimony: Five girls in one family killed by Israeli bombing
Testimony, B’Tselem, 4 January 2009
Samira Tawfiq Said Balousha, 36, married with nine children, is a homemaker and a resident of Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Her testimony was given to B’Tselem’s Muhammad Sabah by telephone on 30 December 2008:
My husband and I lived with our children in a three-room asbestos house in Jabaliya refugee camp. The house is next to Imad Aqel Mosque. We had nine children: Tahrir, 17, Iman, 16, Ikram, 14, Samar, 12, Samah, 10, Dunia, 7, Juhar, 4, Muhammad who’s a year and a half and Bara, who’s two weeks old.
Last Saturday [27 December], after the Israeli bombing began and after pieces of asbestos fell from our house because of the bombing of the district-government building, my husband and I took the children and went to my father’s house. We stayed there for one day and then returned home and continued our normal life — I did house work and the girls prepared for their mid-year tests that were to take place during the week.
On Monday [29 December], around 11:50pm, I woke up and heard my husband calling to me: “Samira, Samira, they shelled the mosque, get up and see, and recite the Shahada [Prayer of the dying].” It was dark, and I couldn’t see anything. I recited the Shahada. I felt something heavy choking me and pressing on my body. I was buried under a concrete clock, stones, and sand, and barely managed to move. I succeeded in freeing my hand and pushed aside the things that had fallen on me. I got up and went to look for my children.
I found Bara, my two-week-old daughter. She was alive, even though her bed was buried under the ruins. I saw my husband getting out of the ruins, and I handed Bara to him.
I then went to look for my son Muhammad, who was sleeping next to me. At first, I didn’t see him because of the rubble, but I found him alive under the ruins. I managed to free him, and I gave him to one of the people who came to help clear away the rubble.
In the meantime, I continued to look for my daughters. Their bedroom was covered with blocks of concrete and stones and sand. Other people helped me look for them. I was very weak because I had been injured in the head, and I was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital.
At the hospital, I learned that five of my daughters — Tahrir, Ikram, Samar, Dunia, and Juhar — had been killed, and three were wounded. Muhammad was injured all over his body, mostly in the face.
Israel bombed the mosque next to our house without warning and without thinking about the people who live next to it. Lots of houses in the area were damaged in the blast.

Richard Falk, United Nations Human Rights Council :
“The Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war.
Those violations include:
Collective punishment – the entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip are being punished for the actions of a few militants.
Targeting civilians – the airstrikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world, certainly the most densely populated area of the Middle East.
Disproportionate military response – the airstrikes have not only destroyed every police and security office of Gaza’s elected government, but have killed and injured hundreds of civilians; at least one strike reportedly hit groups of students attempting to find transportation home from the University.”

For the last 60 years the Palestinian Refugees are living in a United Nation Refugee Camps waiting for UN to implement the UN Security Council resolutions. For the last 60 years Israel conducts collective punishment and state terror against the Palestinian Refugees. That is not making a fake news.
Occupying other people by force is losing policy in the past and now and has no future.
No one could NOT change his mind unless he has no mind.
