Will blood tests always reveal cancer? Leukemia?
Question by : Will blood tests always reveal cancer? Leukemia?
if you had Leukemia and had a CBC test would the doctor be able to tell just from the blood work?
Best answer:
Answer by iceman
Yes and No.
If you had Leukemia your blood work would be abnormal, in most cases severly abnormal. Which would prompt furthur testing, including testing of the bone marrow which would indicated Leukemia.
Many other cancers would not show abnormal bloodwork unless the cancer was far advanced in most cases. Lymphoma will sometimes have abnormal bloodwork in early stages, but ussualy not.

PurePower Engine Flight Tests
Pratt & Whitney PurePower™ PW1000G Engine Pratt & Whitneys PurePower PW1000G engine is not just a concept or a promise for the future—it is reality. With 20 years of research and development, component rig testing on all major modules and ground and flight testing of a full-scale demonstrator engine, the PurePower PW1000G engine is already proving its ability to deliver game-changing reductions in: * Fuel burn * Environmental emissions * Engine noise * Operating costs In the PurePower PW1000G engine, a state-of-the-art gear system allows the engines fan to operate at a slower, optimum speed while freeing the low-pressure compressor and turbine to operate at their optimized higher speed, increasing engine efficiency and delivering significantly lower fuel consumption, emissions and noise. This increased efficiency also translates to fewer engine stages and parts for lower weight and maintenance cost. The PurePower PW1000G engines fan-drive gear system is just one component of this next-generation engine. The PurePower PW1000G engine also incorporates advances in aerodynamics, lightweight materials and other major technology improvements in the high-pressure spool, low-pressure turbine, combustor, controls, engine health monitoring and more. Pratt & Whitney has been actively testing all key components of the PurePower PW1000G engine family, with 16 technology rigs running around the world. In May 2008, Pratt & Whitneys full-scale demonstrator engine completed a ground test …

Detection of Bile Duct and Pancreatic Cancers Doubles With New Tests
Pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancer are difficult to diagnose and often fatal because they are discovered in the advanced stages of the disease. Researchers have developed new tests that double the ability to detect bile duct and pancreatic cancers according to a Mayo Clinic study Bile duct and pancreatic cancers are very difficult to diagnose, says Lewis Roberts, MD, Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and senior author on the study. We were very pleased to see that the combination of FISH and cytology significantly improved our chances of diagnosing patients reliably. The earlier we can diagnose a patient, the better the types of treatment we can offer and the more likely they are to have long-term survival after treatment.

Question by Tony: 79 yr old. Always weak;120lbs, 5’10″. What tests should I request?
The docs are scratching their heads over me. Meantime, I’m miserable. All labs come out ok, though platelets alone were hi. BP is fine, sometimes a bit low. Heart checked out ok. Note I had one lung removed at 30 yrs old, never had complications thereafter. The Neurologist says it is not neurological… he says, quote “your muscles and nerves are starving for nutrition”. He believes it’s a small cancer. The oncologist says there is no cancer. Diet is balanced but I have zero appetite and no sense of taste. I make sure I force myself to eat, it is balanced and includes Ensure. But I can’t get too much into me so it’s just consistent with the little energy I need; I want to be hungrier; I want to have more energy; I want to gain weight; I want to be active. This has gradually worsened over about 3-4 years, very slowly.

Question by Tony: 79 yr old. Always weak;120lbs, 5’10″. What tests should I request?
I asked this question in the cancer section, now I’m not sure about cancer…
All labs ok; no anemia. Never smoked or drank. Had hi platelets last year; took hydroxyurea which brought them down but seemed to aggravate weight loss/fatigue. They took me off; now I’m no worse and no better. BP, heart, lungs OK. Note-one lung removed at 30 yrs old, never had complications. The neurologist says it’s not neurological & says, “your muscles and nerves are starving for nutrition” & believes it’s a small cancer. The oncologist says no cancer. Had body scan from the chest down – nothing. Diet is balanced but have zero appetite & no sense of taste. I force myself to eat, it is balanced and includes Ensure. I want to be active, hungrier, gain weight and have more energy. But I want to get there by fixing the underlying problem. I’m been on Linoxin and Cumadin (for arterial fibrilation) for 6 years; my problems started about a year after that and have worsened gradually.

Can somebody tell me what test(s) lawyers need to verify if COPD is asbestos related?
Question by : Can somebody tell me what test(s) lawyers need to verify if COPD is asbestos related?
Is it the CT scan or a biopsy? I’ve tried emailing this question to a few law firms with no results. In October 1998 a company hosed me and my crew down and then threw the clothes we were wearing into an asbestos dump because they were contaminated. The doctor I’m stuck with is a pill pushing quack who I have had to lose my temper with in order to get him to shut up and listen. Needless to say this doctor does not give a damn because I have no insurance and am depending on a county health care system. Personally I think it is pretty messed up that the US Government will provide first rate health care to detainees at Guantanamo Bay, but not someone that has contributed to the economy of the USA!!!

Q&A: Can someone explain the blood tests after being diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer?
Question by Tuke1: Can someone explain the blood tests after being diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer?
My dad had colon cancer stage 1 and had surgery in dec to remove it. His doctors do blood tests on him every three months. Can someone explain what kinds of tests these are. His test that he just had a month ago came back abnormal and his doctor ordered a ct scan. Could cancer already be back. We don’t live near each other so I can’t go with him to the doctor. Please explain
Best answer:
Answer by Spreedog
If your dad had actual stage one colon carcinoma, the odds are that it would not be back after surgery only 8 months ago – unless the initial staging was wrong.
How old is he ? That simple information is so critical on this site.
The three month test is probably a CEA serum marker test.
It could be a CA19-9. http://www.tc-cancer.com/tumormarkers.html
It sure would help if you could tell us which test he had done
- and what the result was.
Of course the doctors who know all the details of his case could explain this much better.
Best advice always is to go with your family member when he or she sees their doctors who have all the facts of the case. – - – -
My mother lives 600 miles away. I drove to be with her when she went to her doctor for bladder cancer follow-up. You can’t expect the doctors to call every family member for every patient. All of my patients had cancers. There were not enough hours in each day to call all concerned family members about test results. I recall one evening I explained the test results for one patient eight different times for different family members who called my emergency line. It took hours. Doctors understand the concern that family members have. It is just impossible to tell everyone individually. Unlike lawyers, doctors do not charge for all the hours on the phone explaining things over and over – usually late in the evening or late at night.

Cancer and blood tests…?
Question by Unknown: Cancer and blood tests…?
If someone has cancer, will doctors be able to detect this based on blood tests? For instance, if one has early stages of lung cancer, would a routine blood test that includes red and white blood counts indicate this?
Best answer:
Answer by Panda
No. There are over 200 different types of cancer and in the overwhelming majority of this disease there is no way to tell that someone has cancer in the early stages.
There are blood markers, however, for some types of cancer but usually they are best used to monitor a disease once someone knows they have it.
Sometimes a routine blood test will show high or low counts or something unusual and a doctor will order additional tests to rule out cancer. But there is nothing available by way of a blood test that will tell a doctor that a patient has cancer . . and further . . no way to tell where the cancer might be located in the body.
Usually it is only advanced cancer that has noticable symptoms . . early cancer is asymptomatic. The best way to find an early cancer is by noticing any unusual bumps or lumps and having them investigated immediately.

Blood tests for cancer?
Question by ஜBECஜ ~Mama to Lucy & bump~: Blood tests for cancer?
My Mum recently had blood tests following scans indicating masses on her lungs. The blood tests do not indicate cancer but I wasn’t sure if this means 100% that she does not have lung cancer… or whether it maybe means that it still could be cancer but not progresses enough to be detected in her blood etc… sorry if that’s a stupid question but can anyone shed some light?
She still has to go for an endoscopy and hopefully we’ll know more after that.

Answer by Tarkarri
Some blood tests give an indication of some types of cancer.
They are a useful diagnostic tool, and help narrow down the possibilities, but blood test results alone would only be conclusive if the cancer was in the blood, eg leukaemia.

Q&A: electrical heart malfunction. what tests, scans?
Question by JEANNE B: electrical heart malfunction. what tests, scans?
we [me and my husband] went to my HMO so i could see the head of cardiology, Dr X. very peculiar man. started out nice and funny. he asked me about my heart history so i told him:
=unpredictable angina which began when i was 23
=1998 hole in atrial wall via bubble echo
=year of TIAs and visual distortions as thyroid Rx was not at right dose; diagnosed by Johns Hopkins [not non-painful migraines]
=3 heart attacks since thyroid removed in 1997 due to cancer, first one was 2 months after surgery when thyroid Rx not working
=other HMO branch, in hospital overnight to investigate weird heart beats associated with TIAs–flat line 6 times and heart fibrillates itself to start up, thereby churning up blood which goes through the atrial hole in the heart all lumpy, causing the TIAs and visual distortions. when the heart stops, i cannot breathe in or out
=2005 CHF diagnosed, put on Digoxin and Spironlactone [can finally sleep lying down flat and pee 12lbs water overnight on first digoxin dose]. heart is reasonably OK till 2008 when it periodically goes wacko again, palpitations, fluttering, missing beats, extra beats, no beats, aching.
=bad oedema 2009: face hands and legs and feet and ankles…
=lungs fill up at night with fluid and i cough a weird cough for the past 3 years
=[plus I have two swollen spleens [instead of just one] and my liver is swollen at 25cm with 4 masses which HMO says are fatty, Europe says are not. and i have new thyroid tissue regrowth as of 2008 which aches, feels like the cancer did in 1997 and makes fluttery feelings in the blood vessel in my neck base down to my chest, then to my heart. and he knows i am a diabetic 1.5 LADA, with gastroparesis stomach nerve damage, and have lymphoblastic leukaemia since bone/marrow biopsy 2006]
so he tells me: ”forget about your heart history, i can’t access your other records. a heart ultrasound here was fine last year, as well as a nuclear treadmill test. there was no sign of a hole.” he also says ”tests last year had your liver at 18cm, i can’t pay attention to a May MRI from Europe that says it’s 25cm.” [even though i told him i had the 2009 MRI with me] um hellooo ???? forget my heart history? i ask him if a hole can heal, twice, he will not reply.
he gets a bit uppity, feels the swollen liver and spleens, hears something in my lungs. tries to tell me the stomach reflux is making my lungs fill up, except i get reflux maybe once every 10 days and take a Losec that stops it in about 20 minutes, and yet the lung fill up happens EVERY night; he does not get the logic of this statement. I take Cilroton for the gastroparesis [European Rx not available in the USA] as I was taken off Reglan as it gave me terrible side effects and nerve damage after taking it for a over a year.
then asks me if i exercise, i say “i can’t, as i get out of breath and gasping for air just walking from car port to the apt”. so he says, ”OK if you can’t walk i want to see you on a treadmill right now!” like some kind of challenge. makes me do a treadmill test, mostly, i intuitively feel, so he can say f-you there is nothing wrong, his coup on top of last year’s tests, like go away and stop bothering everyone here.
except i can barely do it, gasping, dizzier [dizzy before i began, and all the time], high BP, i can’t keep my feet at the front of treadmill, i’m hanging on, my feet keep drifting back so i am getting more and more stretched out and almost horizontal while struggling to walk and stay upright; they keep telling me to keep my eyes open, and then the tech doing the machine says, ”come here, come here, look at this!” so Dr. X goes over to the machine with the heartbeats graph and the big print out, goes absolutely purple as a beet and has to admit that there is some kind of ”electrical malfunction of the heart”.
he wants me to have a cardiac cauterization in the groin test, but i cannot do iodine in the dye, highly allergic to it.
is there another kind of heart test to show the inner workings of the heart, possible clogged arteries/veins, valves that aren’t working, etc etc and whatever ”electrical malfunction” they are looking for? something that is less invasive and less dangerous with their past propensity to mess up any internal procedure, both in Hawaii and California??? some kind of scan, an MRI, MRA or whatever, colour doppler? anything other than them thrashing about in my veins and heart with catheters?

The main focus of this test was the dynamic weather, cloth and general feel we are going for. Our environmental artists were set a task to create a realistic scene, while at the same time adjusting to the new tool set- vForge. This has also allowed the 3D artists to finally get to see their own work and what it looks like in game. Q&A: How can blood tests be used to determine which site (bone marrow or lymph nodes) has cancer tumours?
Question by jeiyne03: How can blood tests be used to determine which site (bone marrow or lymph nodes) has cancer tumours?
Best answer:
Answer by cdlbhd321
If it is a tumor of the bone marrow then the cancer cells will be completely immature whereas if the tumor is in a lymph node the cells will be mature but mutated.
The reason is that white blood cells either mature in the bone marrow or the thymus before being released to the lymph nodes so that if the cancer is in the bone it will release unmatured cells but in the lymph node it is simply mature cells that mutate.

Epa Test’s toxic pesticides on Kids
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Bush appointees, plans to launch a new study in which participating low income families will have their children exposed to toxic pesticides over the course of two years. For taking part in these studies, each family will receive 0, a free video camera, a T-shirt, and a framed certificate of appreciation. In October, the EPA received million to do the study from the American Chemistry Council, a chemical industry front group that includes members such as Dow, Exxon, and Monsanto. The EPA’s Linda Sheldon says the study is vital, because so little is known about how small children’s bodies absorb harmful chemicals. As of press time, none of the EPA’s employees are offering to have their own children take part in this research project. The Organic Consumers Association is calling on the nation’s citizens to demand the EPA forgo this project before its scheduled launch in early 2005. I know acting on symptoms early is the best way to go, but if you have missed them, would the doctors be able to tell something is wrong by annual blood work?

Depends if they are looking for it. When they do blood work they only test for what the doctor tells them to. They may be able to detect that your counts are off on a complete blood work up. But this is not routine.
