Bert Vogelstein gave the closing plenary lecture, “Cancers – Their Genomes, Microenvironments, and Susceptibility to Bacteria-based Therapies” on June 5th. He teaches at John Hopkins University. ASMCUE, now in its 18th year, is a professional development conference for approximately 300 educators. Each year, its steering committee organizes a program that offers access to premier scientists in diverse specialties and to educators leading biology education reform efforts. Some examples:
Alcoholics with liver disease.
Smokers with lung cancer.
Poor people with multiple children.
Promiscuous people with STDs
People with poor diets who are obese.
People with bad teeth who have poor dental hygeine/poor diet, drink soda pop all the time.
I consider myself liberal, but I just can’t bring myself to have sympathy for people who are responsible for their own maladies. No one puts a gun to your head and makes you do these things. I feel sorry where children are involved, but that’s about it.
Practically everyone takes health class in Junior High/Middle and High School.

My grandmother was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer and is doing a daily radiation treatment. I don’t know many of the details, sorry. To make it short: she was diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer, had a hysterectomy, and began radiation recently.
Her dog, a tea cup chihuahua has stopped eating, stopped sitting with my grandmother and is just not her normal self. Is this because of the treatment? Should the dog be taken away from my grandmother while she is going through the treatment?

The dog could be reacting to the way your grandmother is acting. Or the dog could be reacting to drugs that your grandmother is taking. The radiation therapy is not detectable by humans or animals.
For whatever reason, the dog knows something is wrong. It may be best to move the dog if the dog won’t sit with your grandmother, but if you can find a way to get the dog to eat a little, then keeping the dog with grandma might be a comfort to her.

According to doctors, I had a 3.5cm,(1 3/8″), nodule suspected to be cancer in my lower left lobe of my lung. CT Guided Needle Biopsy proved inconclusive, so entire lower lobe was removed, Fri. the 8th. Pathologists say it’s a nodule formed by ‘Valley Fever’. I had worked in South New Mexico in oil exploration in early eighties. From what I have read a cold, or flu are the common symptoms, anyone ever heard of anyone with my condition?

Yes. A good friend of mine at church had it, and, oddly enough, my dog contracted it too. I live in Phoenix, where a lot of dust is kicked up by new construction. They think that’s how my dog got it. There are mild cases, and then there are serious cases. It’s a very real condition, and it’s more serious than the name implies. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

A place I used to work is being sued, for mold, mildew, asbestos, and numerous other toxicins, in the walls and air of the building according to more than 15 employees…the management there says that these substances are not in the building…but a toxocologist came in and found these substances…the building is still open for more people to work in, and thousands of people come in and out of it a day…
I worked here half a year, before I lost my job…When I worked here I noticed foul smells in the hallways where I was walking…also some hazards where people could trip and fall, and the management doesn’t do much about it, just looked the other way.
I haven’t gotten sick from working here from what I’ve seen, but some of my friends says I should have my lungs checked out to see if those toxicins have made their way in my body…right now it looks like a million dollar lawsuit…with many claiming their respiratory and pulmonary organs will be affected for life with them needing long term care for life…
If you have more than 15 people suing about this, do you think that they’d all be telling the truth
well that is what one person noted…that it could be millions of dollars…may not be…

They may be telling the truth as they understand it, but they may not be correct about either the presence of toxins, the type or amount of toxins they have been exposed to, or the health affects of the alleged toxins. Proving that the toxins are present will be the burden of the plaintiffs, and just the first hurdle they must jump. It will challenged by defense attorneys, who will present their own expert witnesses in the field of toxicology. They must also show by a preponderance of the evidence that the alleged toxins have damaged their health, another difficult hurdle. They will have to provide medical experts as witnesses who will back up their claims of respiratory and pulmonary damage and the need for lifetime care. All of us hope that legitimate claims are revealed and made right, but it’s difficult to prove and expensive to attempt.

Fellatio may significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women

(AP) — Women who perform the act of fellatio and swallow semen on a regular basis, one to two times a week, may reduce their risk of breast cancer by up to 40 percent, a North Carolina State University study found.
Doctors had never suspected a link between the act of fellatio and breast cancer, but new research being performed at North Carolina State University is starting to suggest that there could be an important link between the two.
In a study of over 15,000 women suspected of having performed regular fellatio and swallowed the ejaculatory fluid, over the past ten years, the researchers found that those actually having performed the act regularly, one to two times a week, had a lower occurrence of breast cancer than those who had not. There was no increased risk, however, for those who did not regularly perform.
“I think it removes the last shade of doubt that fellatio is actually a healthy act,” said Dr. A.J. Kramer of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research. “I am surprised by these findings, but am also excited that the researchers may have discovered a relatively easy way to lower the occurrence of breast cancer in women.”
The University researchers stressed that, though breast cancer is relatively uncommon, any steps taken to reduce the risk would be a wise decision.
“Only with regular occurrence will your chances be reduced, so I encourage all women out there to make fellatio an important part of their daily routine,” said Dr.. Helena Shifteer, one of the researchers at the University. “Since the emergence of the research, I try to fellate at least once every other night to reduce my chances.”
The study is reported in Friday’s Journal of Medical Research.
In 1991, 43,582 women died of breast cancer, as reported by the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Len Lictepeen, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, said women should not overlook or “play down” these findings.
“This will hopefully change women’s practice and patterns, resulting in a severe drop in the future number of cases,” Lictepeen said.
Sooner said the research shows no increase in the risk of breast cancer in those who are, for whatever reason, not able to fellate regularly.
“There’s definitely fertile ground for more research. Many have stepped forward to volunteer for related research now in the planning stages,” he said.
Almost every woman is, at some point, going to perform the act of fellatio, but it is the frequency at which this event occurs that makes the difference, say researchers. Also key seems to be the protein and enzyme count in the semen, but researchers are again waiting for more test data.
The reasearch consisted of two groups, 6,246 women ages 25 to 45 who had performed fellatio and swallowed on a regular basis over the past five to ten years, and 9,728 women who had not or did not swallow. The group of women who had performed and swallowed had a breast cancer rate of 1.9 percent and the group who had not had a breast cancer rate of 10.4 percent.
“The findings do suggest that there are other causes for breast cancer besides the absence of regular fellatio,” Shafteer said. “It’s a cause, not THE cause.”

My dad has many heart attacks. He has one good artery left and the 13 small branches are diseased. He had the defibrillator put in a year ago. And yesterday was diagnosed with Adnoid Carcinoma and they have to radiation or so that is what I have read. Could someone please tell me if he can possible even due radiation.

I am not a doctor, but I have a very hard time believing that he couldn’t have radiation therapy. Even if the target was right beneath the defibrillator generator in the shoulder, they can remove the generator, a very simple procedure, hook the leads up to an external defibrillator unit and perform the radiation therapy. The unit can be reinstalled after. Expensive but very possible.
More than likely they will just shield the unit in another way, and do what needs to be done.

I didn’t mean Germans in general… that’s why I referred specifically to the experiments conducted on humans.
I SPECIFICALLY meant the damn experiments! Not people who were “part of the Nazi machine”… I know who Braun was, I’ve played enough World War 2 games

Yes. Using the results does not mean we agreed with the means.
We did use other information developed by the Germans. Look up Werner von Braun.
EDIT – I see you did not look up Werner von Braun, who in fact was a part of the Nazi war machine, but who later became the director of a NASA flight center. I understand that not all Germans are Nazis. But many Germans, like von Braun, participated in the Nazi system. That didn’t stop us from using the “spoils of war” to our advantage. If we are okay using Nazi rocket technology, I’m sure that a cure for cancer would be welcomed.
