Can radiation therapy in humans affect their pets?
Question by Peekaboo: Can radiation therapy in humans affect their pets?
My grandmother was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer and is doing a daily radiation treatment. I don’t know many of the details, sorry. To make it short: she was diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer, had a hysterectomy, and began radiation recently.
Her dog, a tea cup chihuahua has stopped eating, stopped sitting with my grandmother and is just not her normal self. Is this because of the treatment? Should the dog be taken away from my grandmother while she is going through the treatment?
Best answer:
Answer by Frank
The dog could be reacting to the way your grandmother is acting. Or the dog could be reacting to drugs that your grandmother is taking. The radiation therapy is not detectable by humans or animals.
For whatever reason, the dog knows something is wrong. It may be best to move the dog if the dog won’t sit with your grandmother, but if you can find a way to get the dog to eat a little, then keeping the dog with grandma might be a comfort to her.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

This medical animation illustrates Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). When this treatment is administered, beams of radiation strike the tumor target after passing through a component in the IMRT machine which acts much like a filter. It shapes the radiation beams to the size and contour of the tumor. This helps to keep the radiation distribution tightly controlled, avoiding healthy tissue close to the tumor. IMRT can treat difficult-to-reach tumors in areas such as the spine, head, neck, prostate, lung, liver and brain.

It is not a good idea to take to many herbal supplements when you are getting chemo or radiaiton. Radiaiton can effect your bone marrow. Herbal therapy can also lower your blood counts. Most doctors will suggest that you stop while getting treatment. If your counts drop to low due to herbal meds they may have to take a break from treatment which you do not want.

I will be having daily radiation treatments for 5 1/2 weeks and Chemo for 6 weeks.

Radiation treatment for different areas is done differently.
I had mine for cancer in my breast, daily treatment, 5 days a week for 5 weeks, ended up loosing layers of skin in the area treated (ouch!)
My sister had hers for uterine cancer, it was done intravaginally, single 24hour dosage which took more than 24 hours as it needed to be turned off whenever anyone else entered the room, eg meal deliveries, nurse for toilet requirements etc.

Tong Ren energy healing was developed by Tom Tam as a therapy for internally healing a patient’s energy system by using the collective unconscious. In the winter of 2001, Tom successfully healed a client with lung cancer by using energy healing exclusively. After that, Tom set up a healing class for cancer patients and, at the same time, took the opportunity to train his students in this healing technique. By February 2002, the first healing class began. During the next four years, more than 10000 people have attended Tong Ren Group Healing classes all over the world. As of late, the class has drawn people with diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, RSD, and HIV/AIDS – to name a few. Gene therapy improves stem cell transplantation

Dutch tv journal of 15 June 2006 about new method to prevent immune reactions after cell transplantation. Suicide genes form the basis of a strategy for making cancer cells more vulnerable, more sensitive to chemotherapy. The approach has been to attach parts of genes expressed in cancer cells to other genes for enzymes not found in mammals that can convert a harmless substance into one that is toxic to the tumor. Most suicide genes mediate this sensitivity by coding for viral or bacterial enzymes that convert an inactive drug into toxic antimetabolites that inhibit the synthesis of nucleic acid. Suicide genes must be introduced into cells in ways that ensure their uptake and expression by as many cancer cells as possible, while limiting their expression by normal cells. Suicide gene therapy for cancer requires the vector to have the capacity to discriminate between target and nontarget cells, between the cancer cells and normal cells. acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, ALL, AML, ANLL, anemia, blast crisis, blasts, blood, bone marrow, cancer, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, CLL, CML, erythrocytes, granulocytes, hematopoiesis, hematopoietic stem cells, leukocytes, lymphoid lineage, lymphoid stem cells, myelocytic leukemia, myeloid lineage, myeloid stem cells, platelets, red blood cells, RBCs, thrombocytopenia, white blood cells, WBCs, hairy cell leukemia, human T-cell leukemia, chemotherapy …
Millions of British people are at risk of developing serious health conditions because of low vitamin D levels declares a new scientific review commissioned by the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS). Despite the proven health benefits of vitamin D, about three quarters of British adults fail to reach even their basic requirements thanks to poor dietary intakes and a lack of sun in this country. Now nutrition experts are calling for the shortfall in our diets to be made up by improved dietary intakes and vitamin D supplementation. As studies show, supplementation has a guaranteed effect on vitamin D status. In this latest study review, called Health Impacts of Vitamin D: Are We Getting Enough?, independent researchers analysed the current evidence surrounding vitamin D. The aims were to identify the main health benefits associated with the vitamin and to explore issues surrounding optimal daily intakes. Leading dietitian, Dr Carrie Ruxton, and senior lecturer in Human Nutrition at Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Emma Derbyshire, reviewed more than 100 published research papers relating to the potential power of vitamin D, mechanisms to explain its benefits, vitamin D intakes and recommendations. Their paper will be published in the June issue of Nutrition Bulletin, the journal of the British Nutrition Foundation. Scientific research suggests that vitamin D plays an important role in helping combat a host of serious health conditions, including cancer …
Can a person have radiation therapy with a defibrilator installed in their heart?
Question by brooke_blundell: Can a person have radiation therapy with a defibrilator installed in their heart?
My dad has many heart attacks. He has one good artery left and the 13 small branches are diseased. He had the defibrillator put in a year ago. And yesterday was diagnosed with Adnoid Carcinoma and they have to radiation or so that is what I have read. Could someone please tell me if he can possible even due radiation.
Best answer:
Answer by chattterus
I am not a doctor, but I have a very hard time believing that he couldn’t have radiation therapy. Even if the target was right beneath the defibrillator generator in the shoulder, they can remove the generator, a very simple procedure, hook the leads up to an external defibrillator unit and perform the radiation therapy. The unit can be reinstalled after. Expensive but very possible.
More than likely they will just shield the unit in another way, and do what needs to be done.

Describe in layman’s terms how radiation therapy works?

I am completely lost.
“Describe layman’s terms how radiation therapy works and what it can do with relationship to the types of equipment available.”
Any help would be appreciated.

Best answer:
Answer by OldPilot
Radiation is generally used to treat cancer. All cancer treatments (vs surgeries which just tries to remove the cancer without removing so much healthy tissue that the patient dies.) is simply killing cells, Chemotherapy drugs are deadly poisons. The goal is to kill all the cancer cells before the patient dies. The goal with radiation is the same. Kill with radiation the cancer without doing so much damage that the patient dies.
