My lungs feel like they are on fire/burning?
Question by JediMaster: My lungs feel like they are on fire/burning?
My husband and I live with my mom-she’s disabled and I take care of her full time. Both her and hubby smoke. She smokes like a chimney. My step dad, her hubby, buy her the smokes so it’s not like I can’t not buy them for her.
I have asthma, and am on two different drugs for it-Proair for short acting and I take areobid twice a day to control symptoms.
When I say something to my mom, she tells me “I’ve smoked all your life, I’m not going to quit, get off my back.” Hubby says something similar.
Short of a Dr. telling them I have stage four lung cancer with days to live and your smoking did this to her, they aren’t going to quit.
Lately, every time I’m around cigarette smoke (even smelling it can do it) I either start coughing really bad or feel like I’m going to hack up a lung. Also anytime either one of them lights up, my lungs feel like they are on fire and burning really bad.
What could be wrong?
I don’t want to have to put her in a home, don’t think my step dad would allow it anyway.
I do have a job (fast food, minumam wage kind of thing) and I only make about 600 a month. To move completly out of my apartment that I share with them is nearly impossible-there’s no where to live in my area that I can afford. I’ve looked-cheapest rent in my area for a stuido apartment is 620 a month. Not hard to figure out the math there.
I hate the burning/fire sensation I get. Is it somthing I should be concered about?
yes, hubby is working to. He makes about 800 a month. As far as looking for another job? The area we live in is such a depressed area, it took me almost 3 months to find this one. As far as only smoking in one room of the house, my mom does keep her door closed most the time-however she smokes so much that when she does open her door, the smell of smoke overwhelms me.
and as far as moving, it’s not hard finding a place where we can afford the rent, its coming up with the money to rent a truck to move, the money the new place would want in deposits, buying some funitrue like a couch and table at goodwill and stuff we can’t afford.

Wow… what a crappy situation. Your own mother and husband are killing you and don’t seem to care about it. How sad. Since you have already asked them not to smoke around you and they don’t seem to think that the are the culprits. I would say to go ahead and get a doctors note saying that the smoke is what is harming you and show that to them. If they still don’t want to stop, I would say that you threaten to put your mother in a home saying that you don’t want to jeopardize your health so that she can smoke.
Good luck to you.

Question by geno m: My mom had surgery on her gallbladder and had it removed they took off nodules sent them away and we cancer?
befor the surgery she had blood work a ct scan and chest x-rays can someone tell me what the site of the cancer would be. They scoped her throat the lungs stomach and kidneys are ok. Just found this out today and I am really down please help
Best answer:
Answer by Melissa M
I am sorry to hear that. My mom was recently diagnosed for cancer too and she is still going thru testing. These things are tricky and very upsetting and depressing. Too me it sounds like it may have only been in the gallbladder and if so she is very lucky they caught it in time. They will biopsy those nodules, that usually takes about a week or two. They will have more to go on after that. Hopefully all will turn out ok. My mom has tumors all in her bones (spine, cranium) and she just had a hip replacement. they are still looking for her primary if she has one. Just get your mom ready in her battle gear because if she has it anywhere else it is going to be a fight! Think positive, and pray. Don’t let them tell you anything that is negative about death because that is all up to her, and God. She is the one who can decide wether or not she will fight and live, and she can. Everything else is just data. Listen to the docs they do know what they are doing, but use your instincts as well. Nutrition is a big key, and knowledge is. The more you learn and know about what is going on the more it will help her and you. Surf the web for things and look for a lot of inspirational stories. Miracles happen everyday…Good luck to you and your mom, and….the best medicine…..(((((((((HUGS)))))))))

Q&A: My dog has bone cancer in his front leg, they wont amputate?
Question by Melody W: My dog has bone cancer in his front leg, they wont amputate?
My 6 year old Doberman was dx with a malignant bone tumor today. The vet doesn’t recommend amputation because he is a bigger dog and a little older and it is his front leg. He said he would do it if I really wanted him to but if it is just for pain relief and wont extend his life I cant justify it. I have an appt with a dog oncologist on Monday to determine whether or not it is osteosacroma, and if it is and it has spread to his lungs should I put him to sleep? The pain medication I have for him now is not working so well he is limping around but not whining or making any noise. My husband is deployed and will be home in 5 weeks. If it has spread and they are not willing to amputate and give him 4 to 6 weeks do I keep him medicated so my husband can say goodbye or do I do the humane thing and put him to sleep? Are there any alternatives out there besides just watching him die? My vet is at the University of Cambridge in the UK and they are the forerunners of Cancer care in animals.
Best answer:
Answer by exploding bassets
Personally, I think your vet is nuts.
We had a front leg amputated on our 6 year old lab mix. He did just fine, was able to go back to running, jumping, catching his frisbee and swimming. He lived to be 13.
The only reason I would NOT amputate is if the cancer has spread beyond the leg, in which case it would be pointless.
As for whether to euthanize, that depends on your dog. As long as he is enjoying life, I would let him continue.

Question by murphy: 1 week ago told have a 5 mm nodule & 3 more three mm in lung.can they be biopsyed yet &-appt 4/10 for consult?
Had chest CT on complaint of chest heaviness while in hospital on unrelated matter.(was admitted for intestinal flu) that’s when nodules found. To primary dr yesterday. said they were too small yet to be tested. Am 65 female on HMO. 2 years ago had friend die lung cancer after complaining to docs for 1year before tested for lung cancer. I live in state where quality health care highly questionable. I am very frightened to put it mildly. Any info and comments greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead, Murphy

A nodule is defined as a relatively round lesion that is less than three centimeters in diameter. A lung nodule is located within the lung itself, not in the airways. A patient with a lung nodule usually experiences no symptoms; the nodule is most often detected on a chest x-ray. More than half of solitary or single nodules within the chest are benign, or non-cancerous, usually due to a previous infection. However, all solitary chest nodules are considered potentially malignant until proven otherwise, and for this a needle biopsy may be required.
A biopsy involves removing a small piece of tissue for examination by a physician. A needle biopsy, sometimes called a needle aspiration, is the easiest way that tissue can be safely removed from the body. The procedure, which is most often performed by a radiologist or interventional radiologist, involves a needle that is inserted through the skin. The needle biopsy may use a syringe or an automated needle to obtain the tissue sample.
Once a nodule is detected, a computed tomography (CT) or positron emission tomography (PET) scan may be performed to help characterize it and to help estimate the likelihood of malignancy. If the CT or PET scan cannot clearly identify positively benign features in the nodule, a needle biopsy may be necessary. When a physician orders a needle biopsy, the nodule is usually believed to be unreachable by other diagnostic techniques, such as bronchoscopy.
You state that all of your nodules are > 3mm, and most needle biopsies are perfomed on nodules larger that 3mm. Your doctor thinks they are too small, which would be contradictory to standards. You don’t say if your primary physician is a pulmonologist. If he is not, you should be referred to a specialist as soon as possible. If you have lung cancer, it is imperative that you be treated agressively. Waiting for a nodule to grow can be a death sentence. Do not wait around for a GP or FP to decide if you need treatment. Demand a referral to a specialist (HMO’s have specialists on their panel) and get those nodules tested as soon as possible. Good luck.

Why are ‘they’ hiding the cures?
Question by Thia Bohemia: Why are ‘they’ hiding the cures?
Well, most of us know that they have cures for EVERYTHING. HIV and Cancer included, along with other ailments. That is the way of life. This world is too big, and there’s too much in this world to NOT have a cure.
And who are ‘they’ to keep cures from the public?
We all know that this deranged ‘government’ is keeping more than cures from us.
. . .
I just wanted to know, because I am going to school for ethnobotany, and I know that a lot of ethnobotanists are hired by the government to find NATURAL cures and stuff for ‘them’ to use….
No rude answers please, I’m really wanting to know.
Best answer:
Answer by The Chair
Because there’s no money in the cure! There’s money in the treatments as long as you keep paying them then they keep you alive. If they cure you what the hell do you need to come back for? Think about it! If they cured everybody they’d be out of business wouldn’t they?

What year did they stop using asbestos insulation in the US?
Question by Matt454: What year did they stop using asbestos insulation in the US?
Particularly as thermal inulation in the walls of campers and RVs. There is an old Tejas brand truck camper sitting on some rural property I just purchased and I’d like to cut it up with a sawzall so I can dispose of it in a construction dumpster but I’m worried that the walls might containt asbestos.
Best answer:
Answer by Vulcan
Generally you didn’t see asbestos as insulation in cheap stuff like a camper. And mostly it’s harmless anyway. There’s two kinds of asbestos – the most common form is “serpentine” – and the dangerous stuff which makes up a fairly small amount of asbestos in some projects is called “amphibole”. Nobody in the government apparently knew this when they made the big hysterical asbestos laws.
Your chances of running into any sort of asbestos in insulation is pretty small except where it contaminates vermiculite – and then it has to be just the right kind. Wear a mask – wash your cloths when you’re done – and you’ll come through smelling like a rose.

How much weight and how fatigued would one be if they had stage IV (any) cancer?
Question by WTFFTW: How much weight and how fatigued would one be if they had stage IV (any) cancer?
Had a little scare a while ago. I must have had some bug because I’d be getting up around 10 AM and going to bed around 9 PM (albeit laying in that bed in between). I’ve since gotten better, still feeling fatigued though (probably from all the anxiety). I’m able to stay up for 15 or 16 hours with caffeine. I also lost 5 lbs in a week, getting down to 150 at lowest, but I’ve been gaining a little weight since my appetite returned a few weeks ago (around 3 lbs). The only medication I’ve been taking is Tylenol to soothe some of my tension headaches. If I had metastasized cancer, would I be feeling even more fatigued and be losing even more weight? I’m an 18 year old, 5’9″ male, and my weight seems to be healthy for my age and height.
I haven’t been diagnosed with anything, I’ve just been feeling really weird lately. I may have a few symptoms of colon and oral cancer, but there are inconsistencies (i.e. no blood in stool and they are usually normal size – more like IBS probably, and my sore throat began before my lymph nodes enlarged). I just get really worried because of what happened to my father, and I’d like it if I got some straight answers regarding the question instead of questions about my personal history. Sorry, but I just get annoyed when people respond without actually answering the question, but I’ll get over it.

If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation?
Question by : If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation?
If someone has colon cancer do they always get chemo or radiation? My friend said that he has colon cancer not sure if i believe him. He said 4 weeks ago he had surgery. But then he mentioned he will have to have physical therapy. I think his physical therapy was due to his back. He said the doctors never told him about how long he has to live. Why would someone need physical therapy after a colon operation.
Best answer:
Answer by N
In some cases surgery is all that is necessary. In more advanced stages additional treatment, like chemo, may be necessary.
If he was bedbound for more than a week he may have become weak and needed some therapy to help him get back on his feet and regain his strength.

Found dirty crystal minerals of some sort, what are they?
Question by Chosen by Grace: Found dirty crystal minerals of some sort, what are they?
I’ve been mining out in the desert, and have been digging up bizarre ugly crystals that resemble very short chunks or wide slabs of tourmaline. Some of this crystal stuff is in tiny glass like sheets that you can see through. However, some of it looks like warped dirty ice, others look like garbage asbestos. I came upon some veins of the stuff, and it easily crumbles into little short fibers. A small amount of rocks had some of these crystals embedded in them, and those rocks are light beige and smooth and feel soft, but when washed with water, do not melt away. A few pieces are like very thin burnt pieces of dry thick crepe (not at all round in shape though), only without a burnt look, but rather a look of mud. And they are covered in tiny protruding very stubby crooked finger-like structures (nothing beautiful). I also noticed that these crystals are poorer the deeper I go into the soil. I eventually got to thick clay, and pockets of this crystal stuff were in it, and as I said, they were poor from then on. What is this dirty ice stuff, and is there any value to it other than as specimens of mineral, and is anything more valuable usually found with this stuff? I’m hoping if I go deep enough I’ll come upon gem material, rather than this apparent pretty junk. This stuff is around an area where a volcano apparently exploded, because there are lava rocks everywhere, ugly ones that sometimes fall apart.

Q&A: Why would many employees sue their work place if what they are claiming isn’t true?
Question by One of a few left: Why would many employees sue their work place if what they are claiming isn’t true?
A place I used to work is being sued, for mold, mildew, asbestos, and numerous other toxicins, in the walls and air of the building according to more than 15 employees…the management there says that these substances are not in the building…but a toxocologist came in and found these substances…the building is still open for more people to work in, and thousands of people come in and out of it a day…
I worked here half a year, before I lost my job…When I worked here I noticed foul smells in the hallways where I was walking…also some hazards where people could trip and fall, and the management doesn’t do much about it, just looked the other way.
I haven’t gotten sick from working here from what I’ve seen, but some of my friends says I should have my lungs checked out to see if those toxicins have made their way in my body…right now it looks like a million dollar lawsuit…with many claiming their respiratory and pulmonary organs will be affected for life with them needing long term care for life…
If you have more than 15 people suing about this, do you think that they’d all be telling the truth
well that is what one person noted…that it could be millions of dollars…may not be…
Best answer:
Answer by David S
They may be telling the truth as they understand it, but they may not be correct about either the presence of toxins, the type or amount of toxins they have been exposed to, or the health affects of the alleged toxins. Proving that the toxins are present will be the burden of the plaintiffs, and just the first hurdle they must jump. It will challenged by defense attorneys, who will present their own expert witnesses in the field of toxicology. They must also show by a preponderance of the evidence that the alleged toxins have damaged their health, another difficult hurdle. They will have to provide medical experts as witnesses who will back up their claims of respiratory and pulmonary damage and the need for lifetime care. All of us hope that legitimate claims are revealed and made right, but it’s difficult to prove and expensive to attempt.

Would Black people buy as many diamonds if they knew that it supports slavery?
Question by dobbinscorey: Would Black people buy as many diamonds if they knew that it supports slavery?
Bling bling as a status symbol? Are the chains around your neck chains around someone elses? In Africa where some of the richest deposits of diamonds are found, poor Africans mine to make the wealthy diamond mine owners rich. Diamond cutters, brokers and dealers all benifit while poor miners work in poor conditions. Why can’t they share the wealth? Diamonds are also found near naturaling accuring asbestos.

I have not seen blood diamond, although I probably will now that I have heard of it. I agree that white people buy more diamonds and I think it is terrible. I worded the question the way I did because I thought it would get more responses Than the first one I posted. I really wish people would read closely and not get as confused about the Irony. By the way white people buy so many diamonds beacause love, marrage, and divorce, are considered a large part of the gross domestic product (GDP) and that is a whole different oppresion conspiracy.

Do you think smokers and alcoholics have the right to sue if they get a disease?
Question by Point: Do you think smokers and alcoholics have the right to sue if they get a disease?
Not too long ago there was a news story about a man in Tampa that developed lung cancer after years of smoking.
His lawsuit was for $ 10 million, but was only awarded $ 260,000.
Since the 1930′s, doctors and pathologists have published information about the ill effects of smoking.
And in the early 1970′s, television and radio broadcasts were no longer allowed to air smoking ads.
So when does it become a personal responsibility versus a company’s fault for ones habit?

I want know more about Pulmonary Fibrosis as I am in the process of being reffered and they believe I have it?
Question by Millar901: I want know more about Pulmonary Fibrosis as I am in the process of being reffered and they believe I have it?
I am a 38 yr old Policeman who for the last couple of years has had low Blood/Oxygen counts of between 85 and 94%. Last year I was diagnosed with Esophageal Spasms and since then have had chest pain which I have managed with a combination of GTN spray and painkillers. Over the past 4 months or so I have been getting more and more short of breath and following initial tests was found to have Pneumonia 2 months ago. Now I am being referred to a lung Specialist on the mainland as my consultant believes I have Pulmonary Fibrosis possibly caused by Sarcoidosis. However tests on the Sarcoidosis found it is currently in the safe range. Having done some research on the net it seems that if its confirmed threesis not much hope which has scared both me and my poor wife. As I say I’m 38 never smoked and generally keep in good health and I wondered if anyone out there could give me any advice and/or hope? At this time I am just waiting to hear from the mainland and even though I’m trying to be optimistic I am getting frightened of what the future might hold for me and my young family.
Best answer:
Answer by ?
By no means am I an expert on sarcoidosis, and my perception of it could be completely wrong. However, I looked it up again and I’m fairly confident that:
“NHLBI, Sarcoidosis: NHLBI (Excerpt)
In general, sarcoidosis appears briefly and heals naturally in 60 to 70 percent of the cases, often without the patient knowing or doing anything about it. From 20 to 30 percent of sarcoidosis patients are left with some permanent lung damage. In 10 to 15 percent of the patients, sarcoidosis can become chronic.
When either the granulomas or fibrosis seriously affect the function of a vital organ–the lungs, heart, nervous system, liver, or kidneys, for example–sarcoidosis can be fatal. This occurs 5 to 10 percent of the time. (Source: excerpt from NHLBI, Sarcoidosis: NHLBI)”
So while sarcoidosis is a nasty autoimmune disease (it killed Bernie Mac), people typically bounce back and heal up again. Keep your head up.

Question by Lime: If gamma rays are poor at ionising, why are they used for cancer treatment?
I’m a little confused. Surely you would need something which ionises well in order to kill the cancer cells?
Best answer:
Answer by Eric S
They are toxic but they are to be applied to the CANCER cells and not the healthy cells. They would destroy healthy cells as well, but the rays are applied using X-rays and MRI scans to target as close to the Cancer Cells as possible, enabling your healthy cells to redominate the cancerous areas and possibly eliminate whatever is left of the cancer.
It is to treat the parts of the body infested with cancer and fewest healthy cells.
I guess it’s like why we use powerful bombs to make America safer.
