Hi,
I’ve read that when you chew gum you are taking air into your stomach and it can cause bloating. I’ve recently started smoking e-cigs and it made me wonder:
When you inhale, what happens inside that makes the air go to your lungs instead of your atomach or are they interconnected? When I drink water or eat something, how does that get filtered into my stomach instead of my lungs?

I’m a female in my mid 40′s. I’ve smoked for more than a decade, probably two.
I had my lungs screened about 2 years ago, and the doctor actually said that they looked perfectly healthy.
About 3 months ago I noticed that the right side of my throat was swollen and when I touched it, I could feel some sort of lump. But it hurt a lot when I touched it. The pain went away for a while (although I’m not sure if the lump went away as well, because once the pain disappeared, I didn’t check my throat again) but now it’s back.
It is quite firm, and looks like it’s almost attached to the throat.
I’d say it is located around the area of the cricothyroid muscle (kind of where the adam’s apple is supposed to be in males, but on the right side)
I also feel the right ear kind of wet, sometimes when I touch it.
I’ve read somewhere that it could be allergies or acid reflux?
I haven’t noticed any changes in size, it is the same size as it was 3 months ago when I had it for the first time.
Please tell me it’s not cancer…I’m just so scared. I know I need to check with a doctor, but it’s late here in my country, and I just want to stop worrying this much.
I’ve also had symptoms of a normal cold (dripping nose, cough)

If your sick it’s probably just a swollen cervical lymph node.
Keep taking some basic OTC antibioitics and if you symptoms don’t recede within a few days, go see your doctor for an exact diagnosis and better antibiotics.

The most common side effect is nausea. Fortunately, medication can be administered to control it if need be. Although nausea as well as general fatigue are the most common, radiation therapy (RT) to treat malignancies present in the region of the neck or throat (pharynx), thyroid, larynx, etc., may bring about side effects including sore throat, changes in “taste”, thickening of the saliva and dry mouth. Also, hair loss can occur– but only within the immediate target radiation field. This is less common, but still possible.
Bear in mind that chemotherapy is often an adjunct to radiation therapy in the treatment of certain carcinomas. If that is the case, the side effects of the chemo will be more severe, including nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, profound fatigue, flu-like symptoms, pain, anemia and of course, hair loss.

I am a smoker for the last 5 years and like since last three years i smoke about 15-22 cigarettes a day. recently a pain has started in my throat. One day I even coughed out blood. Is it throat cancer? What are the tests available? What is the treatment? Is surgery necessary to remove any growth? Is there a post operative treatment?? What medicines are generally given? Please professional medical advice. I do not want to bother my parents unless I am sure that it is cancer and cannot be easily dealt.

You MUST go to your doctor.
Until you have had tests no-one can tell you what treatment you will need, although everyone will tell you to give up cigarettes.
I hopeyou are free of cancer, but if it is – it is treatable and last year I went to Aix-les-Bains in France where they have wonderful holidays also offering soothing treatments for throat cancer patients after their operations. I would walk past treatment rooms seeing patients with blissful smiles on their faces. Look this up on www.after-cancer.com / Holidays/France

Hi , my mom is under going daily radiation treatments, this is the 3rd week , her throat is dry and very sore and swollen from the side effects of her treatment, she needs High protien as suggested for imune system, but must have foods that she can easily swallow with less discomfort. otherwise ? with 20 more radiation treatments to go, besides the pain trying to eat her imune system will weaken therfore a feeding tube and possible trekeotomy may be needed to sustain her?.
we have the HP milkshakes already. shes sick of them, asking for real food. if possible other than cottage cheese ,eggs I have not clue and she is allergic, can’t eat anything rough or spicy either?. your suggestions please ?

for the past 5 days ive been dealing with stomach problems, including nausea, lack of appetite, stomach gurgling, gas/bloating, and constipation/diahrrea. Ive also had a sore throat, which may have been misdiagnosed as strep because the antibiotics aren’t helping
ive been up all night worrying about things. I now lay down and if i breathe in my left lung feels weird. I’m thinking either pluresy or pneumonia.
i dont know IF i have oral thrush, but i think i might, and if i do i think that this may be the cause of all my problems. Maybe infecting me? Please help!.
i havent been to the dr much. i was in the hospital for pluresy once, and they tell me i have high blood pressure.
I was also diagnosed with anxiety/panic disorder and depression but this is not what im experiencing. i am actually fairly calm and my body just aches.
feeling weird on the lung..i dunno. it feels like maybe bronchial or something is in my lung..possibly fluid?
im currently taking amoxacillian(sp) for my supposed strep through. 5 days now no change. my diet is extremely unhealthy, mostly fast food and stuff like that.
oh and no cigarette smoking here.

CuT down on the cigarettes sunny, if it aint that. then it could just well be pnumonia you speak of some symptoms, feeling weird sensation in lung? thats not enough for me, what kind of sensation? bubbling? you need to add these in mate could help a lot

last night i was practicing my ghost inhales(when you let out smoke in a bubble form and suck it back in. in other words inhale it back in) and than towards the end of my session my throat started to get sore??? is this dangerous in short term?

Just by nature of the fact that you are inhaling smoke, it’ll irritate your throat/lungs, yeah. Granted, it is less harsh because it’s cooled by the hookah, but it still has an effect. Short term, it’s not necessarily dangerous, no. But smoking in any form in theory is harmful (not trying to preach, I’m a smoker myself). It’s not like it has no negative effect and then you reach a certain number of years and suddenly there’s cancer.

Someone please HELP me, I am so desperate! I have recently done a pap test, which came back positive for HPV. I have little warts in my vulva….and I also had oral sex….but I didnt know I was infected with the virus.
I have a daughter …she’s one years old. My husband gave me the virus, and he didnt even know he was infected. I am soo SCARED….I feel like crying, and I cannot sleep. I am 23 years old..and I’m afraid of loosing my daughter…Im afraid of dieing.
Recently I have been feeling alot of discomfort in my throat and on my tonsils, and i KNOW it is the virus. I am convinced that I have HPV in my mouth and throat. I have made alot of research on this, and the HPV can go away on its own by itself…BUT the problem here is that now Im infected in my throat and mouth. If warts develop how can I remove them? Is there any type of TREATMENTS for the throat?? Or will they keep growing and spreading?? 
Please someone, shed some light into my life….I am seriously depressed. I want to fight this off, but now Im having these symptoms in my throat…..can it go away from the throat?? The more research I do, the more feraked out I get becaue it can SPREAD to the lungs….theerfore I can also get lung cancer!!!

Please relax. There is hope. Most people in the US over 25 are infected with some form of HPV. Now that you have the virus, you will need to take better care of your health. It is important now to take a daily mutivitamin and if you smoke, please stop now. You need to focus on improving the function of your immune system to allow your body to fight off the virus. Garlic is the best antiviral out there. Get fresh whole cloves, crush them, let them sit for about 5 minutes and consume daily (at least 2 large cloves). If you can’t handle it, buy garlic capsules (not as good but better than nothing).
You can have the external (and any internal) genital warts removed via laser treatment or cut out (I recommend laser). Any warts within your mouth or throat should also be removed promptly. Consult with your gynecologist, dermatologist, or family doctor for a referral to a good laser practitioner. After you have all visible/palpable warts removed, your body will have an easier time fighting the virus. Ask for a RX of Aldara cream to keep on hand to use immediately in any new warts as soon as they appear to keep them from getting out of control (you will feel an itch/tingle/pain and get to know where one plans to form before it does and you can get rid of it before it actually appears). Follow the Aldara directions EXACTLY and do not use on any area that is not a wart.
I would not recommend oral sex, as you mentioned, unless you use a condom or some other barrier method. However, sex with a condom should be okay after both you and your partner have treated all visible warts. Under no circumstance should you have intercourse until all warts are treated (as I’m sure you know, HPV can lead to cancer -and sex is just not worth it!) . After the warts are treated (1-4 months depending on severity), you and your partner should get in the habit of examining yourselves everyday before or after you shower to look for any new outbreaks and treat them promptly. You should be able to resume a relatively normal sex life after you have the HPV under control.
It is normal to feel scared and hopeless but it really is not worth dying over. You have your daughter and husband and I am sure that they love you very much. There are so many other people out there in the same situation as you so you are not alone. You just need to be a little more attentive to your health and you will be able to keep your symptoms under control and maybe some days even forget that you are infected with HPV. Your body is a miraculous thing and will be able to fight the virus if you just give it what it needs to do its job. Keep a positive outlook, try to avoid stress, and your body might even be able to eliminate the virus from your body! Keep your head up girl. You are going to be just fine.
**a comment about the post below: genital warts CAN in fact be spread to the throat area (at least during labor and delivery of a baby, so the possibility would theoretically exist then for passage during oral sex). Discuss this with your physician (this is why an obstetrician will not under any circumstances allow a patient with genital warts to deliver a baby vaginally, only via C-section, -the extremely high risk of causing “genital” warts (HPV virus) to grow on the vocal cords, which requires repeated surgeries and voice changes throughout life for the victim (the baby)**

He has a knot on his neck that they discovered was cancer last week. Now they’ve got the full body PET scan back and they found it in his abdomen, left lung and all the way up to his neck. The Dr. sounded optimistic and said that there was hope if we started chemo and radiation, but how much can his 75 year old body handle? He’s got respiratory problems, as well. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I’d hate to lose him now..my son is only one and can’t stand the thought of him not knowing and being close to his great grandpa

Not good. You are right, it is the radiation that will likely be ‘the straw’.
I lost my grandpa not too long ago to cancer. he was 80. In hindsight he would have probably lived another 2-3 years without radiation,, but the radiation killed him in 6 months. =(

you can have MONO or EBV and you will have swollen lymphnodes
cancer you will be tired not eat and sweat alot , GERD acid can cause an issue esphogeal cancer see an ENT dr

How much or how frequently do you have to drink alcohol to be at risk for throat cancer?

I never used to drink more than once or twice a month–one beer after work, two at the most.
In the past two weeks, I have had a couple drinks about 4 nights per week. This means southern comfort with lime joice on the rocks or with diet coke, or a couple of jacks-and-diet cokes. Wednesday i had two gin and tonics.
I guess I feel entitled to kick back with a couple of these drinks because they taste good and they relax me. I used to think only smokers or very heavy drinkers were at risk for head and neck cancers. Am I putting myself at any degree of risk here?

Because smoke has got carcinogens in it. carcinogens can cause cancer over time. The carcinogens interfere with normal cellular processes and this can cause the cells to divide uncontrollably and ultimately cause tumours. As the smoke is inhaled through the mouth, throat, oesophagus and lungs, these are the places that cancer is caused through smoking.
