White powder residue on Vinyl Tiles?

Question by : White powder residue on Vinyl Tiles?
Hello. The office we work in has what we believe to be vinyl tiles, 12×12, with a white powdery substance that is always on the floor. It looks as though the tile has never been sealed before so I’m not sure if this is the cause. I have read online about efflorescence. Could this be that? I’m really nervous because I don’t know if it is asbestos. There are a few people in this area, and our chairs are constantly rolling around on the floor. I would say that the floor is just worn down because of the high traffic but I just wanted opinions on what it could be. This powder gets on the bottom of our chairs and our shoes. Any help is appreciated!
I should mention that when it gets on our shoes or pants, it looks like chalk. It could just be the floor being worn down due to high traffic. We are on the second floor so I’m not sure what is underneath the tiles. It’s not the white stuff that is worrying me so much, but whether or not the tiles are old and may contain asbestos. We’ve mopped it before and it keeps the chalk stuff down for a little but it comes back. It doesn’t appear as though it’s coming through the grout or lines, but the tiles themselves.

Do old white floor tiles have asbestos (pre 1960)?

asbestos floor tile
by Cannabis Defense Coalition

Question by Robin L: Do old white floor tiles have asbestos (pre 1960)?

Best answer:

Answer by B-Notable
I was taught in asbestos O&M (operations and maintenance of asbestos containing buildings) to watch out for the 9″ X 9″ floor tiles, that they are more likely than others to contain asbestos. I was also taught to beware of the mastic that they are glued down with especially the dark brown or black mastic. Beyond that the only way to tell was to have a sample analyzed by an industrial hygienist.

Q&A: Slate tiles over existing wood fireplace. Adhesive questions??

what is asbestos used for
by jasleen_kaur

Question by Lori: Slate tiles over existing wood fireplace. Adhesive questions??
I have an older fireplace (1950) that is painted corrugated wood. It’s the only way to describe it, sort of like corduroy or old asbestos siding–think ridges.

The are that it encompasses is about 1 foot in wide. My dad gave me a box of slate tiles he had left over from refacing a front stoop and I would like to adhere these to the wood around my fireplace, grout it etc.

I have a tile saw (and a husband not that I need one for this :-) ) so the size, etc is no trouble. I just wish to know what kind of adhesive to use. As it’s a vertical surface it much adhere immediately so it doesn’t slide off.

Would liquid nail type of stuff work? I’m going to either Lowes or Home Depot in a few hours but would love some ideas before I go. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your input–have you ever done something like this?

Thanks again!

somewhere under the decorative “corregated” facade is the base structure. get down to that and then fasten a 1/4″ to 1/2″ wire mest to the structure with screws and brackets or whatever will secure the mesh and still sit flush to the surface. The adhesive witll grab the mesh and hold on better. as with the adhesive, slate is funny, i would ask home depot cuz slate has very few materials that it works well with. proly a morter or grout made for slate.

Help! Asbestos tiles?

Question by : Help! Asbestos tiles?
My base floor has asbestos tile floors. Today I was trying to pull up some tape stuck on the floor which caused one of the tiles to come up to. I immediately dropped the piece of tape and got away. What should I do, is this dangerous and do you think I could be affected by what happened. I know asbestos is dangerous. Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Best answer:

Answer by Lynne W
if you’re trying to replace the entire floor, the best way is to hire professionals; they know how to handle the material.

if that is not an option for you, wear protective gear, place the material into plastic trash bags and get it out as soon as they are full. you might need a blowtorch or heat gun to loosen the adhesive.

however, from what you’ve described, the tape was probably there to keep the tile in place. go remove the tape, and get some adhesive to put the tile back down.

How much would it cost for new sheetrock and fixing ceiling tiles?

Question by K_Nic87: How much would it cost for new sheetrock and fixing ceiling tiles?
I’ve been thinking of maybe moving into my grandmothers house now that she has passed away. No one has lived in the house since December of 2007 and it has kind of gone down hill since. In the dining room between the kitchen and the den, the ceiling, which is sheetrock that has the circular..or flower design don’t remember what you call it is messed up in the corner. I guess it has leaked where it rained sometime and there is black mold growing in that spot where it leaked. I know the black mold is dangerous. Does that mean I need to redo the whole ceiling or just that one spot? I know the black mold showed up sometime in 2009. Also, in one of the bedrooms she had the tile ceiling and part of it is trying to fall in where it has leaked and the same problem in the den in one area. So with that do I replace all the tiles or just the ones trying to fall in? Or should I change it out to sheetrock? One issue is the den ceiling has these dark brown wooded things going across the top of the ceiling. Not sure what you would call it. Anyways..I didn’t realize how much work was involved until I went yesterday. The ceilings wasn’t like that til recently because no one has lived there in a while. Also, it needs a new roof because the shingles are old. I was told those shingles are dangerous ones consisting of abestos because my fiance said it looked like some from way back that they don’t use anymore. It’s a very nice roomy house, but my grandmother just never really changed it up that much. I just need some opinions on what I need to do and some estimates.

Best answer:

Answer by T C
Here is what you do

Call three roofing companies for an estimate ….you did not give any measurements so I cannot give you an estimate on the roof …..plus it sounds like some of your deck {roof deck} will need replacement.

While you are gathering estimates, you can start removing the bad rock areas to see how much needs replacement. You won’t be able to tell until you tear into it and see how much mold and other damage is there.
You don’t want to do anything until the roof is repaired at which point you can decide if you want to do it or hire someone

What is the best way to cover Tiles with asbestos.?

asbestos tiles
by I am I.A.M.

Question by gotaquestion: What is the best way to cover Tiles with asbestos.?
We have one room that has asbestos tiles in good shape (frankly i don’t know if they have asbestos, but i assume they do because they are old)

What is the best way to get rid of them ?

1) Put 1/4” new sub floor, then put real hardwood on it ? (Would the hardwood hold nicely to the 3 or 4 layers ? (sub-floor then maybe hardwood then the tiles then the new sub-floor)
2) put the hardwood with a paper barrier (or whatever they use) right on the tiles

Thanks.
Specifically i want hardwood floor.

And lets assume it has asbestos.
The house was build in the 40′s. So i really don’t know the history of the tiles.

Best answer:

Answer by Dan in FL
If the floor tiles are anything less than 12″ X 12″ then there is a 90% chance they are asbestos. The rule is “NOT” to disrupt them . Some have and some have not.. I put carpet right over the top of them.

We glued carpet onto asbestos tiles and now are getting a strange smell? Help!?

asbestos tiles
by I am I.A.M.

Question by PJ S: We glued carpet onto asbestos tiles and now are getting a strange smell? Help!?
We glued carpet down to old asbestos tiles in our basement. The tiles were in good shape so we saw no reason to remove them and just carpeted over them. The carpet was glued directly to the tiles. Now about 6 months later we have found an odd smell in the room that is emanating from the carpet. There is no smell in the closet which did not have the asbestos tiles or in the other room we did which also did not have the tiles. We are wondering if the carpet glue reacted with the tiles in some way to cause this odor. It smells musty and almost moldy and causes our daughter to get a runny nose when she’s in the room. It bothers my sinuses as well. Anybody have any idea what this is and if it’s related to the tiles? Also if it sounds hazardous? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Damon P
if in a basement, it sounds as if you have a moisture problem. Its best to get the carpet out ASAP because the mildew could be mold…black mold can cause many problems and even be fatal.

old vinyl tiles, hardwood floor?

Question by re: old vinyl tiles, hardwood floor?
Q: I have a 30-year-old home. I want to put down a hardwood floor. The problem is that I think the old vinyl tiles, which are cracking and sit on a concrete slab, have asbestos.

Can I cover them or do I need to remove them to successfully install a hardwood floor?

Best answer:

Answer by me
I would remove the cracked tiles replace with a similar height vinyl tile. (wear protective gear) Then put a cushioned underlayment then luan then the new flooring. Delta FL is a fantastic underlayment.

How can I glue vinyl tiles that have loosened off the floor?

Question by Differently-abled musician: How can I glue vinyl tiles that have loosened off the floor?
1. The tiles have been on the floor since about 1966.
2. I do not have the money to replace the floor at this time.
3. I will probably put wood floors in the future, so this is a temporary fix so don’t tell me crazy glue which may not ever come off.
4. Yes, I was the one who pulled off the tile in the first place.
5. The tiles are 9 inch by 9 inch, and do have slight spaces between them.
6. I do not know if either the glue on the back of the tile or the tile itself contains asbestos, but I am pretty sure that it does not.
7. I really do need your suggestions, this tile is in my way!

Best answer:

Answer by ca_surveyor
ok.. so lets assume that the tile came up INTACT.

1) Go to the hardware store and get the same glue it was placed with. It will come in a pint can which is prob. all you will need

2) Clean off the area as best as you can from the back of the tile.

3) Clean off the floor area where the tile is going. A warmed scraper will help with that.

4) Warm your oven a bit and but the tiles in there on a cookie sheet or something like that. Do not get it HOT.. just warm. This makes the tile felxible.

5) Apply the glue as directed.

6) Reinstall the tile(s). Since you obviouly will not have spares do it carefully and do not tear or break the tiles.

7) When the time comes to re-remove them use a propane tourch and warm them up.. they will usually lift right off with a scraper.

good luck……

We are having Asbestos tiles removed from out kitchen. Question about preparing my home with pets.?

by Cannabis Defense Coalition

Question by charontheloose: We are having Asbestos tiles removed from out kitchen. Question about preparing my home with pets.?
I have indoor dogs and cats. If I remove them from the down stairs and place them in my sons room do you think that is enough? The contractor said he will Block things off from the kitchen. And prep the kitchen, too totaly clean up after in the kitchen area.
But because my immune system is low he wants me to be gone.
I do have open cup boards with dishes, canned and boxed foods. Plus clean supplies under the sink. Do you think I can just box them all up and remove them into the next room? Should they be taken out to the garage instead of the other room?
Thank you in advance!

Best answer:

Answer by Esby
In asbestos removal, everything should be removed from the room, dishes, food everything. And personally I would board my animals and after your contractor has cleaned up, you clean up as well while wearing a mask. Asbestos is serious business and if he does a good job everything should be fine. I always err on just in case. I assume he’s removing floor tile which is not as bad as some, actually very stable in an undamaged state, but dust gets places.

Question by Do it-YO Self Her: Can I lay a self leveling concrete or mortar over tiles from 1958?
The tiles are laid over the concrete basement flooring. If so, any pros and cons would be so helpful. Also if I cannot use a self leveler over these tiles, how do I check to see if these tiles contain asbestos.
Is there anything else I can use without removing the tiles? I was told not to remove them or I would have an asbestos nightmare… Funds are limited to finance this project. Any frugal savy Remodelers out there?? Exchange of services is an option, — I have my own Graphic/Fine Art Business.

Q&A: Will broken asbestos tiles leave a dangerous residue in my house?

removing asbestos tiles
by slworking2

Question by : Will broken asbestos tiles leave a dangerous residue in my house?
I removed carpet in bedrooms in my house. There was some broken vinyl tile underneath. Did I make my house a hazardous environment covered in asbestos? What is the danger level after 4 months. What steps can be taken to resolved the situation?

Best answer:

Answer by Drewfuss
No danger at all. they may not have been asbestos at all. If they were, the danger with asbestos is in breathing the dust of it. these tiles don’t really make any dust when you break them. Only possible risk is if you tried to cut them or sand them with powr tools and created dust that way. Even then. the people who had medical problems from asbestos were those who worked with it for years.

Q&A: can you hide asbestos tiles with laminate flooring?

removing asbestos floor tiles
by slworking2

Question by : can you hide asbestos tiles with laminate flooring?
I have recently ripped up a carpet in my flat hall way, underneath are black small tiles which I have also damaged on the edges closest to the walls whilst pulling up the carpet grips.
After a conversation with my colleague it turns out she had very similar tiles in her kitchen which turned out to be asbestos, it all got removed by the council immediately as her property is council owed…the only thing which worries me is the flat i am living in was council too but is now privately owed & rented to me…do i need to be worried?
can i just lay laminate flooring over these tiles??
thanks
i have contacted the landlord but he is telling me its ok to just put the laminate over it, to me it just doesnt seem right?
i have disturbed the tiles though when ripping up the carpet grips? have i exposed myself? if it is asbestos?

Best answer:

Answer by ReadyfortheBeach
asbestos isn’t a bad product when left untouched. They are actually very fire resistive and great insulation, but when asbestos is disturbed it sends particles into the air and can case serious health problems.

The best thing to do is have a qualified contractor come remove the asbestos; many people do, however, cover asbestos and it is dangerous while it is exposed and you are walking/working on it, laying new laminate because you are disturbing it and causing particles to fly up. Once it is covered however, assuming nothing is disturbing it, it won’t cause a problem.

I would at least look into your council trying to remove it.

Our condo has old kitchen tiles that may be asbestos how to deal with this?

Question by theheatheatwave: Our condo has old kitchen tiles that may be asbestos how to deal with this?
We have an old floor from the 1950s in our home. All of the tiles are intact except for one tile that is cracked. There is a good chance there is asbestos in the glue used for these tiles. We want a new floor.

I’m very interested in Marmoleum:

It’s “real” linoleum and it would give our kitchen a nice vintage look. But to put it down we’d need a totally smooth surface. I don’t want to remove the potentially asbestos tiles, since this could be costly and kick up dust.

Would we be able to put down a plywood layer on top if the existing floor, have a slight step up when entering the kitchen (1/4″) and then have the installers put the Marmoleum on top?

First, don’t do ANYTHING until you have it tested by a professional. Asbestos is fine as long as it is intact; once it is opened (which it is by the break), it is dangerous. You pretty much should do something to have it removed professionally. You can’t do it yourself, and if you sell in the future you have to disclose this legally or you can get sued. If you have children, you want it removed. Living with exposed asbestos for a couple of years causes meotheleioma which is worse lung cancer than someone who smokes 4 packs a day for 30 years cold get.

Asbestos wouldn’t be in the glue; it would be in the tile itself or in the subfloor. And as noted, these are already exposed.

Alternatively, and this is not the best solution, you could put down a thick PERMANENT covering over this and then lay the linoleum. Problem with this is that it would be a different height than other floors would look odd. UPDATE: Don’t go with plywood; it wouldn’t seal out the dust, a mastik (sp?) for tiling spread very smoothly would be the best option.
