Question by murphy: 1 week ago told have a 5 mm nodule & 3 more three mm in lung.can they be biopsyed yet &-appt 4/10 for consult?
Had chest CT on complaint of chest heaviness while in hospital on unrelated matter.(was admitted for intestinal flu) that’s when nodules found. To primary dr yesterday. said they were too small yet to be tested. Am 65 female on HMO. 2 years ago had friend die lung cancer after complaining to docs for 1year before tested for lung cancer. I live in state where quality health care highly questionable. I am very frightened to put it mildly. Any info and comments greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead, Murphy

A nodule is defined as a relatively round lesion that is less than three centimeters in diameter. A lung nodule is located within the lung itself, not in the airways. A patient with a lung nodule usually experiences no symptoms; the nodule is most often detected on a chest x-ray. More than half of solitary or single nodules within the chest are benign, or non-cancerous, usually due to a previous infection. However, all solitary chest nodules are considered potentially malignant until proven otherwise, and for this a needle biopsy may be required.
A biopsy involves removing a small piece of tissue for examination by a physician. A needle biopsy, sometimes called a needle aspiration, is the easiest way that tissue can be safely removed from the body. The procedure, which is most often performed by a radiologist or interventional radiologist, involves a needle that is inserted through the skin. The needle biopsy may use a syringe or an automated needle to obtain the tissue sample.
Once a nodule is detected, a computed tomography (CT) or positron emission tomography (PET) scan may be performed to help characterize it and to help estimate the likelihood of malignancy. If the CT or PET scan cannot clearly identify positively benign features in the nodule, a needle biopsy may be necessary. When a physician orders a needle biopsy, the nodule is usually believed to be unreachable by other diagnostic techniques, such as bronchoscopy.
You state that all of your nodules are > 3mm, and most needle biopsies are perfomed on nodules larger that 3mm. Your doctor thinks they are too small, which would be contradictory to standards. You don’t say if your primary physician is a pulmonologist. If he is not, you should be referred to a specialist as soon as possible. If you have lung cancer, it is imperative that you be treated agressively. Waiting for a nodule to grow can be a death sentence. Do not wait around for a GP or FP to decide if you need treatment. Demand a referral to a specialist (HMO’s have specialists on their panel) and get those nodules tested as soon as possible. Good luck.

Do you think my Doctor would have told me?
Question by gk: Do you think my Doctor would have told me?
I did a chest x-ray a few weeks back, because I was having chest pains. Well that turned out be costochondritis. But the doc (he has 3.5 years experience) told me that my lungs look like a smoker’s and I should quit which is fine. However he saw no reason to be concerned. I’m assuming that if he saw issues on the chest x-ray (lung spots or anything similar) he would have schedule further tests or at least said something else, but he didn’t. The doc btw is my brother in law. I had him look at it again a week ago (for another reason) and he still didn’t say anything. So do you guys think there are no signs (besides the fact that my lung look ‘old’), or should i carry the x-ray to a neutral doctor?
Best answer:
Answer by In a minute…
You do not have to worry. If your doctor saw soemthing that you should be concerned about, he would have told you. However, telling you to quit smoking means you are probably at risk of something serious if you don’t quit, so I’d listen to the doctors orders

Most people get COPD from smoking, but I got COPD even though I have never smoked and have rarely been around anyone who smoked. My mom and brother thought I was going to die for sure! Question by themaggie5: lung cancer patient was told by Dr. that’s all folks cant do any more for you, after falling for the 4th time?
is there any truth to that, she has been falling getting out of bed ( I think ) to fast to go the bath room and gets dizzy and no one there to help her and she falls but the Doctor has the balls to tell her just in these WORDS that all folks , she was told the first time this past Feb,13,2010 that she had cancer and all the chemo treatments they kept saying it was working perfect and the cancer was getting smaller and it was under control, now thats all folks ?
Best answer:
Answer by Denisedds
It is hard to imagine the doctor would have told her it was under control when that is so very unlikely.
She can always get a second opinion.
However, she should have been told without surgery her chances of survival are zip.
I’m sorry, but it is true.

I’ve been told that I already received the max dose of radiation, doesn’t that mean I can never have it again?
Question by ♥ Animal Luvr ♥: I’ve been told that I already received the max dose of radiation, doesn’t that mean I can never have it again?
I didn’t know there was a “max dose” until my treatment was complete. I received the max dose of radiation and it was concentrated in my pelvis for cervical cancer and nodes, but it also extended all the way up to my armpits because there were lymph nodes higher too and they were worried it had microscopically spread even higher, they were playing it safe they said by going higher than shown just to make sure nothing was missed. Now I am anxiously awaiting another PET scan in a week which will show if theres any activity, last scan showed a tiny speck on the cervix itself and if its still there I was told surgery is the only option. I asked why I couldn’t have radiation for just that spot and I was told that I can never have radiation again because I received the max dose, any more is toxic apparantly?
Can someone please explain this a little better?
I am worried, because now I am at increased risk for other cancers as well since I already had CC and I had radiation which increases risk. If I found cancer say, breast cancer, could I be treated with radiation for it? I am really worried that the over-compensation in the radiation may have cost me the chance to ever have radiation again if I need it. I am trying to remain calm about it but I think this is something that should have been discussed with me prior to giving me the max dose so I would understand the risks and benefits of getting the max dose and have some input on the decision making process.

Radiation is a very dangerous substance to humans. It corrupts us on the cellular level. Radiation therapy works because cancer cells are more susceptible to radiation. I think it was the right choice to use the maximum radiation in the beginning. That way you remove as much as the cancer as possible, but hopefully all of it.

She said we could take him home for a day or two so we could say goodbye but we have to bring him back so that he can be put to sleep. She said it is probably advanced liver cancer causing all the tumors, we don’t want him to suffer but we love him so much and would do anything to save him.

Why am I able to walk 3 or 4 miles a day after being told I have severe lung disease?
Question by Edward Devere: Why am I able to walk 3 or 4 miles a day after being told I have severe lung disease?
The radiologist’s reading of my latest X-ray says “severe lung disease” but I can walk miles without tiring or feeling out of breath. This puzzles me. I am diagnosed as having COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). When walking upstairs I become short of breath.

it takes more effort to climb stairs (foot goes forward AND up) than walking, and you’re walking 3 miles slowly.

As long as you have supplementary oxygen and it’s keeping your saturations up there really is no need to move. If it was higher than I would say yes. Mo. would be fine with the research program and all. Maybe it’ll work. Who knows? Doctors that are doing research are usually the best in that field and have a good handle on what can be done for it. You get treated like a king, it’s paid for and you might be better off for it. Seems like a win-win to me.
God bless.

How long can that last, I have checked many sites but don’t find that kind of answer. Can this disease really just go into remission? Any info. on this would be appreciated. In two weeks she is having tests to find out at what stage it is. She has lost weight the last 2 years. The doctors told her she had a eating disorder but i knew she didn’t because i see her eating. She has coughed up blood and had times she can hardly breath. I feel scared it sounds to me like they haven’t caught it early enough to cure.
Has anyone had a family member with lung cancer the same symptoms , if so what stage of cancer were they at, thank you,
Best answer:
Answer by Peggy
If only one lung is affected they may be able to remove it and save the other one. Don’t despair yet. She could try cancer treatment centers of America if she does not like the treatment and diagnostics she is getting now. Another thing to remember is that you need to allow her to go if it is time for her. Give her verbal permission so she does not feel guilty not being able to stick around. If she is not curable get her into the hospice program right away because it benefits both her and the family. The hospice program is normally free to the family. If she is curable be very patient with her. And get a grief counselor from the hospice program or a chaplain. It is hard to let go or to help your mom fight. I know I have been there three times. Don’t neglect yourself because she needs you.

I have been with my Fiance for 2 1/2 yrs, Our Wedding is set for Sept. 19, 2008 and I cant wait to get married to her. I found out 3-4 months after I met her that she smokes Cigarettes, I do not Smoke at all and I do not want my Fiance to smoke. I am a Cancer Survivor of Head & Neck Cancer, and knowing that Smoking can cause Lung Cancer it makes me hate it even more, I do not want anybody that I love or care for to go through the treatment like I did for 5 months, worst time of my life. I just recently found out that she has been lying to me for the past 4 months, she told me that she was stopping for good so I took her word for it and neer mentioned it again. I called her today, and caught her smoking, she even admitted to me that she has never stopped. She feels like I am not compramising with her, she feels that if she doesnt do it around me and I dont smell it on her, I shouldnt have any problem with her smoking. I cant do that, just the thought of her smoking hurts. what can i do?

I was told today that my sister in law cancer in her lungs , the chemo will not make it go away ,?
Question by themaggie5: I was told today that my sister in law cancer in her lungs , the chemo will not make it go away ,?
that’s not what chemo job is, chemo job is to pro long her life, she was told in Feb, of this year about her lung cancer and they put her on chemo treatments her hair fell out and she going off in her head some where in no where land she comes back not knowing who she is or where she been and she tells us little story’s like she was in McDonald’s and a lot of old people was in there making thing with the white napkins and they just looked at her and then some one grabbed her and wrapped her in a sheet and put her in the back of a truck and that was the hospital and they are cleaning the poop off her, a few days will go by and she will do nothing but sleep and when she gets up she coming back a little at a time more and more each day THEN its time for another chemo treatment one time she had the poops real bad and when she got in the hospital she keep telling all the nurses that she was ready to have this baby (she 68 years old) and she is going to name it Henry that’s her cats name. my question is this what chemo does for people?
Best answer:
Answer by Victoria_in_Cali
I’m really sorry to hear bout your sister-in-law. The symptoms you are describing are generally not associated with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy side effects mostly consist of pain, diarrhea, constipation, mouth sores, hair loss, nausea and vomiting, and blood-related side effects. If they told you that her chemotherapy is not to remove the cancer but only to prolong her life, then it is most likely she is in the late stages of cancer. The cancer has most likely metastasized in to her brain and is causing hallucinations. I see this frequently in late stage cancer patients, especially lung cancer.
This is a very painful and difficult cancer to deal with. In the late stages, patients are not expected to live very long. Please be very supportive and compassionate, I’m sure she is going through a nightmarish ordeal. Best wishes to her and your family.

Best answer:
Answer by heckenhocker
You have a boyfriend who you have never met? That’s not a boyfriend, that’s a friend, who is male. Rather early to be considering him as husband material unless this friendship is part of an arranged marriage.
If this is an arranged marriage, consult with your parents or marriage-arranger for guidance on the background of this man’s illness.
If this is just someone you have met on the internet or as a penpal, then keep things as friends till you have met in person. Don’t do anything rash. If you do meet and eventually marry, skin cancer does not have to affect a physical relationship. It can make a person more cautious about being in the sun (may not be possible/happy to have beach holidays), and can have mental effects (fear of return of cancer, keen to live life to the full etc).

pinion said that the mestastasized cancer in the lung could have possibly come from your cat ………..in front of other people, not definitely, but possibly…..what would you do?
http://www.achooallergy.com/chronic-inflammation-disease.asp?utm_id=NL0207
This evidence suggests that cancer can be attracted to an inflammed tissue in the body that has become that way from allergic irritation so that lymph glands get swollen and provide a highway transportation system to allow the cancer cell vehicles to move between other organs and the lung.

I know the answer is hard but you need to get rid of the cat. What you have to do is decide if your life is more important to you than the cat.
I have colon cancer and believe me if it came down to my life or keeping the cat, it would be gone. There are places out there that can find it a new home. Just look in the phone book.
