The charge was negligence that led to more than 2 thousand asbestos-related deaths in the biggest trial of its kind. The case in Turin could set a precedent for proceedings worldwide about safety at the workplace. 64-year-old former Swiss owner Stephan Schmidheiny and 90-year-old Belgian shareholder and former executive Jean Louis Ghislain were accused of intentionally omitting to put in place measures to prevent asbestos damage at the Swiss firm Eternit’s Italian plants. The defendants, who were tried in absentia, were charged for their role as executives at the fiber cement maker’s Italian affiliate Eternit SpA. They deny wrongdoing. Protesters gathered outside the court house and laid down posters with featureless faces and names of victims who died from asbestos-related diseases. A number of newer treatments have recently become available and have shown initial promise against prostate cancer. Newer treatments are usually used in prostate cancer when hormone treatment is no longer effective and the cancer has started to grow again. The aim of this trial, which is called STAMPEDE, is to assess three of these newer treatments, given earlier in the course of the disease in combination with hormone treatment. The three new treatments to be assessed are: 1. Zoledronic acid: Prostate cancer cells can spread to bones and weaken them. Zoledronic acid is a drug that reduces bone destruction and hardens bones. This may make them more resistant to attack by cancer cells. 2. Docetaxel: A drug that stops cells replicating that is currently being used to treat lung, breast and ovarian cancer. 3. Celecoxib: An aspirin-like drug that is used to treat arthritis. It slows down the growth of cancer cells in the laboratory. We wish to see if it has the same effect on cancer cells in patients. STAMPEDE will look at the effect of combining one or two of the new treatments described above with hormone treatment. A computer program will be used to allocate which treatment the patient receives, using a chance process. Two in every seven patients will receive hormone treatment only; the other five in seven patients will be split equally between the 5 newer combined treatment options. If the fertiliser was too strong it could create a hypertonic solution in the soil and cause plants to lose water by osmosis
It might stimulate the growth of competitor plants
It could increase the number of de-nitrifiers in the soil
