World Tuberculosis Day 24 March 2009.mp4

Tuberculosis (TB) is a common and often deadly infectious disease caused by mycobacterium, usually Mycobacterium tuberculosis in humans. Tuberculosis usually attacks the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. It is spread through the air, when people who have the disease cough, sneeze, or spit. Most infections in humans result in an asymptomatic, latent infection, and about one in ten latent infections eventually progresses to active disease, which, if left untreated, kills more than half of its victims. The classic symptoms are a chronic cough with blood-tinged sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Infection of other organs causes a wide range of symptoms. Diagnosis relies on radiology, a tuberculin skin test, blood tests, as well as microscopic examination and microbiological culture of bodily fluids. Treatment is difficult and requires long courses of multiple antibiotics. Contacts are also screened and treated if necessary. Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem in multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis. Prevention relies on screening programs and vaccination, usually with Bacillus Chalmette Guerin vaccine.A third of the world’s populations are thought to be infected with M. tuberculosis, and new infections occur at a rate of about one per second. The proportion of people who become sick with tuberculosis each year is stable or falling worldwide but, because of population growth, the absolute number of new cases is still increasing. In 2007 there …

This 30sec TV spot was created to help educate South Dakota residents about the importance of receiving their influenza vaccination. What is influenza (flu)? Influenza, or flu, is a viral infection of the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs. There are 2 main types of virus: A and B. Each type includes many different strains which tend to change each year. When does influenza occur? Influenza occurs most often in the winter months. Illnesses resembling influenza may occur in the summer months, but they are usually due to other viruses. Influenza surveillance is conducted by the South Dakota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year from October through mid-May. Who gets influenza? Anyone can get influenza, but it is most serious in the elderly, in people with chronic underlying illnesses (such as cancer, emphysema or diabetes), or those with weak immune systems. How is it spread? Influenza is highly contagious and is easily transmitted through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of an infected person who is coughing and sneezing. What are the symptoms of influenza? Typical flu symptoms include headache, fever, chills, cough and body aches. Intestinal symptoms are uncommon. Although most people are ill for only a few days, some people have a much more serious illness, such as pneumonia, and may need to be hospitalized. Thousands of people die each year in the United States from the flu or related complications.

What is the best maintance medicine for cured minimal tuberculosis?
Question by xxx: What is the best maintance medicine for cured minimal tuberculosis?
I have been into a medication for about 9 months for sure plus I took another 4 months of vitamins. I’m worried until now because for several times of taking my chest examination it always resulted with fibrosis on th upper left lung. PTB Minimal. I work abroad but only on the country were no strict policy on PTB but I want to go other country but I’m afraid the same findings will come out on my medical. What will I do? Please help me.

Answer by ranishwaura
First of all, congratulations on your compliance to the entire treatment.
Fibrosis is the sequel of pulmonary TB and does not indicate active TB. (It actually indicates a healed patch.)
You should try to get a fitness certificate from a physician (preferably one who specializes in chest medicine or treating TB) in a country where you are located stating that you no longer have any active form of PTB and are completely cured of the past infection & are physically fit to do the job you do.
To answer your question, there is no maintenance therapy for TB. Just maintain good diet and take proper precautions (whenever possible) in avoiding direct contact with a known contagious case.

Getting a Tuberculosis (TB) Skin test can be Dangerous
Hi, this is a great comment from Judy Kemecsei and she is talking about TB skin tests and warns about them and I totally agree with her on that. I will read to you her comment and make my own comment about it. “Did you know that getting a TB skin test can be dangerous? Although it is not a vaccine, TB antigens are placed in a syringe and injected under the skin. It contains Tween 80 (polysorbate 80) as a stabilizer, phenol as a preservative. It may contain 1,4-diozane – a suspected carcinogen and a known liver and kidney toxicant. Phenol is a suspected liver, kidney, respiratory, cardiovascular and central nervous system toxicant. Many factors can influence the test results. Thus false negative and false positives are relatively common.” And I totally agree with Judy on this because the real reason why our body actually has to breed bacteria is to protect the body and remove potential cancer cells. We receive TB bacteria from our mothers though the breast milk. This is not by accident and this is not a mistake. TB bacteria are to be in our body in order to keep us healthy and protect us against an overgrowth of certain cells, if that has to happen because of shock, because of conflict situations which typically happens when we are under severe stress, and this is a natural protective mechanism that is built into our biology. So every person has to have TB bacteria. To do a skin test and inject these substances and TB antigens into the system, it can create, it can …

Question by Zsan: scar in the lungs, cancer or tuberculosis?
My mom has a scar on her lungs. Her work environment is safe but she used to be a chain smoker. She stopped smoking a few months ago. Her doctor said it could either be cancer or tuberculosis. She has to go through more tests before the doctor could identify it. But her doctor already gave out the choices.. A) cancer or B) tuberculosis… Cancer runs through the family.

Tuberculosis Symptoms: Finding Out More About The Signs
Tuberculosis Symptoms: Finding Out More About The Signs
Article by Andy Yang
Tuberculosis symptoms may go undetected until the pulmonary or extra-pulmonary condition is in its advanced stage. For that reason, regular check-ups are suggested to appropriately keep track of your health conditions.
Pulmonary Tuberculosis Symptoms
Pulmonary tuberculosis or TB is an infectious bacterial infection that should be identified during its early stages to prevent the spread to other organs and further advancement to a critical stage. This lung infection sets out like most infections – without recognizable symptoms. Many individuals tend to get over pulmonary tuberculosis, while there are also individuals that reveal tuberculosis related symptoms including fever, dry cough, cold sweats as well as abnormalities which can only be seen with a chest x-ray.
Below are a few of the tuberculosis (TB) symptoms that an individual may go through as the disease advances:
A feeling of sickness and low energyExtreme weight loss due to appetite lossShortness of breath, that is mild at the outset and then gets worse graduallyPersistent coughing with thick phlegm and traces of bloodFever with temperature of 38°C (100.4 °F) and above.
Extra-pulmonary Tuberculosis Symptoms and Types
Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis develops when the condition gets worse to more advanced stages and the infection actually starts to affect other bodily organs. It often affects individuals with weak immune systems -the body’s defense system towards illnesses and infections.
Tuberculosis disease symptoms ultimately lead to the identification of the following affected parts of the body:
lymph nodes near the lungs, joints and bones, the digestive system, the reproductive system as well as the bladder, and the nervous system.
The following is a list of tuberculosis symptoms with regards to the kinds ofextra-pulmonary tuberculosis:
GASTROINTESTINAL TUBERCULOSISThe symptoms of gastrointestinal tuberculosis include diarrhea, traces of blood from the anus and pain in the abdomen.
GENITOURINARY TUBERCULOSISSymptoms of tuberculosis which affects the reproductive system and bladder are groin pain, a constant urge to urinate at night, a burning sensation while urinating and traces of blood in urine.
SKELETAL TUBERCULOSISThe most pronounced skeletal tuberculosis problem symptoms are loss of sensation or mobility of affected bones and joints, bone pain, or deterioration of bones that cause curving and fracture of affected bones.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM TUBERCULOSISSymptoms of tuberculosis that affect the spinal cord and brain normally include stiff neck, headaches, blurry vision, being sickly and inconsistent mental states or fits.
LYMPH NODE TUBERCULOSISThe lymph nodes are an oval gland which are spread throughout the body and is an important part of the immune system. They aid in the removal of harmful microorganisms, and so forth in the body. Lymph node tuberculosis may show symptoms like prolonged, painless swelling of lymph nodes under the chin or some other nodes all over the body. This may lead to a release of fluid through the surface of the skin.
It is advised that you regularly see your medical professional as soon as you experience coughing that lasts for three weeks or more, if traces of blood are seen after a series of coughs, or if other considerable tuberculosis symptoms arise.

TB needs to be treated with several antibiotics including rifampin, INH (isoniazid), pyrazinamide and ethambutol known as the “RIPE” cocktail. It is a long course.
Pneumonia is treated depending on what bacteria is causing the pneumonia. Cultures can be done to test for the bacteria and then tests can be done to see which antibiotic will be effective against the bacteria.
With such severe lung disease he would need to be in a hospital where an infectious disease expert can prescribe the proper antibiotics.

why would tuberculosis contribute to lung cancer?
Question by SPD-WRLDS: why would tuberculosis contribute to lung cancer?
well my dad had tuberculosis in his late 20s but recently died from small cell lung cancer.
Best answer:
Answer by under pressure
Lung diseases which cause scarring of the lung tissues, such as tuberculosis, increase the risks of developing lung cancer. This scarring sometimes disrupts the cell reproduction cycle, causing a “malfunctioning” of the cell’s DNA replication. When cells reproduce out of control, cancerous tumors may form.

Can pneumonia be mistaken for tuberculosis or lung cancer?
Question by likearock412: Can pneumonia be mistaken for tuberculosis or lung cancer?
My grandfather is currently in the hospital with pneumonia. He has a mass on his lung and they said they are going to be testing for tuberculosis that he may have gotton when he served in the Korean war nearly 60 years ago. They are also going to test for lung cancer. He’s lost 15lbs in a week, he gets the chills and he has a cough..I’m not sure what else hes feeling. Anybody know any knowledgable information on these 3 diseases?
Best answer:
Answer by Marco’s girl
Believe that they are running all these test to be sure of the diagnosis. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish. My mother used to get diagnosed with pneumonia a lot, when in reality what they were seeing on the xray was scaring from COPD (Chronic Pulmonary Disease). Fifteen pounds is a tremendous amount of weight to lose in a week however, but that could be explained from being ill and not being able to eat much. I know it is hard to wait for test results, but try not to panic. They will find out the answer and treat your grandfather for whatever is the problem. I am sure he is already on intravenous antibiotics. Take care and try not to stress.
