Marijuana has been PROVEN by the British Medical Journal to be less dangerous then alcohol; Both socially and direct damage from the substance.
In fact if you take in all the social costs (health costs, etc) and damage from the substance, alcohol get a rating of 72/100 (100 being most serious).
Marijuana gets a score of 20/100. Marijuana is over 3 and a half times SAFER then alcohol when looking at ALL areas. Anyone who is an alcoholic should switch to marijuana as a safer alternative. The success rate for people addicted to alcohol quitting by using marijuana is 100%! Marijuana on the other hand is less addictive then caffeine! It doesn’t cause lung cancer, it isn’t a gateway drug, it doesn’t kill brain cells…
I am sincerely hoping the United States wakes up one day and smells the hypocrisy. The US can’t make alcohol illegal because the experience with prohibition was a disaster. FYI the addiction rate for other drugs rose 44% during alcohol prohibition, imagine what’s happening as long as marijuana illegal…

My father says my mother could not have known that my grandmother had pancreatic cancer–that cancer was just called “cancer” in the 1950s.

Pancreatic cancer is a disease that affects the tissue of the pancreas, which is the fish-shaped organ that sits in back of the lower portion of the stomach that is responsible for the manufacture and secretion of enzymes and hormones important to digestion. According to American Cancer Society statistics in 2008, some 37,680 people in the United States will receive a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, with 34,290 individuals dying of the ailment. Pancreatic cancer spreads quickly and is rarely detected in its earliest stages-two reasons why it is considered such a deadly form of the disease.

I have a friend who has a kind of cancer called a sarcoma. For those who do not know about Sarcomas they are one of the rarer cancers, there are no Sarcoma foundations, and they are not very treatable. Most treatments for this are trial drugs that can only be accessed from a couple hospitals in the world, one of those few Sarcoma specialists being in Houston. She has it in both lungs, had to have part of her arm removed, and has been battling this for 6 years. She is 18 and lives in Egypt. She has to come to the US for her treatments, but there is no insurance in Egypt or anything to cover her while she is here. I called US NetCare system and they said they cannot help because she has a pre-existing condition. I understand it is not profitable to take on a person in this condition (sad when medical care comes to the dollar) They have racked up over 150K in medical expenses so far, not to mention the cost of the stay in the US, the loss of wages when her parents bring her here (she is too weak not to have them with her), and the air fare of coming back and forth. They have done fund raisers and taken out loans, but their money for her care is running out. Can someone please let me know where they can go for assistance or an organization that can help. They are in great need! And please do not give me some ignorant answer about them not being American, people are people and they have legal medical visas! Thank you.

I don’t know of any organisations in particular but you might want to try some of your local churches. If they cant help directly they may be able to refer you to some organisation that might.

I can’t believe that lung cancer is the #2 killer of women here in the U.S. Second only to heart disease, which is understandable when you look at eating habits, weight, lack of exercise…but lung cancer when the total adult percentage is only 22%? I had seen on British news almost 2 yrs. ago that France has banned air fresheners (cans), plug-ins and the like because they found that prolonged exposure to these chemicals causes lung cancer. I know we have alot of pollution here along with God-knows-what in our food/water, but do you think the french know something we don’t? Has the FDA looked into this? Dana Reeves along with countless others have died of lung cancer w/o ever smoking. Are there any theories out there? I really don’t like giving kudos to the french, but I use these “smell good” products in my house daily and I believe that women, working outside the home or not, still spend more time in their homes than men do…..

thats a good question… my sister died of lung cancer last year and never smoked a day in her life. she was only 39 yrs old. i often wonder how she got lung cancer, but i dont think she used alot of candles or anything, maybe the air freshner though.

You can’t just put surgery in the mail. The doctor would have to abandon their practice to travel to where the patient is or finance the patient’s transportation and recovery where their practice is. Doctors have enough work to do, but if you ask enough of them, maybe one will help. Surgeons in China are very good and even Thailand. Lots of people travel from the US and Europe to Thailand for expensive surgeries the Thai doctors do for a fraction of the cost western doctors require.

I personally feel it SHOULD. It’s the most disgusting, foul, offensive habit a person can have, and FAR too many people have this habit. It’s SICK! I mean, a cigarette smoker can’t even go a few minutes at a doctors appointment etc. without having to walk outside and light up a damn cigarette. There’s a guy that works at my local Play N Trade store that’s always complaining about going MAD if he doesn’t get to go on his break soon because he’s so addicted. It’s such a nasty habit.
I get SO angry and annoyed when I go to a store and I smell cigarettes as I’m walking up to the doors. I try holding my breath in these situations, but it’s not easy with asthma. I get very offended by smokers. My Dad has emphysema AND asbestos in his lungs and he’s slowly dying more every day because of his past chronic smoking habit he had since he was 12. I see what cigarettes has done to him and it angers my soul.
I can’t believe cigarette smoking hasn’t been banned by now. It’s just as bad as marijuana. Worse in some cases. I envy the United Kingdom because over there cigarette smoking is illegal in all public places. You’ll be arrested or escorted away by security if you’re caught smoking there. That’s how it should be in the United States. I’m sick and tired of getting chocked out by foul cigarette smokers everywhere I go. I can’t even relax in the car while sitting in a parking lot with the windows rolled down without some weirdo lighting up a cigarette and causing me to wanna flip the middle finger at them!

I doubt it because its legal now look at all the jobs out their that are with the tobacco industry.
I mean look at alcohol they banned it then legalized it again because people were making their own alcohol anyway. I’m not defending the use of it but I mean its just like the fast food industry. So many jobs with it that even though it has a negative effect on all of us its impossible to take it down

Thousands of U.S. schools still contain asbestos – the fiber that can cause mesothelioma – and there are no plans to remove it, according to the EPA. Although the mineral fiber asbestos, long used in insulation and other industrial applications, is widely recognized as posing a public health hazard, the Environmental Protection Agency says removing it from the nation’s aging schools can pose a greater risk than ‘managing it in place.’ Exposure to airborne asbestos fibers have been linked to lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
A 2001 report written by the American Federation of Teachers focused on the occupational health and safety issues of public school employees in large urban areas. They concluded that crumbling school infrastructure and crowded classrooms are associated with inadequate indoor air quality, asbestos exposure, and mesothelioma, among other illnesses.Asbestos was a common building material in the U.S. until the 1970′s, due largely to its strength and heat resistance. Despite public perception, most asbestos products are not banned in the United States and are still in place in the insulation, roofs and floors of older schools and other public buildings. To minimize health risk to school children and teachers, schools are required to manage the asbestos ‘in place’ according to requirements set out in the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1986.AHERA requires schools to inspect their buildings for asbestos every six months and devise a plan to reduce the hazard from any asbestos that may be present. This can include spraying it with sealants, enclosing it, and keeping it in good condition so that it does not release fibers. Based on evidence that asbestos is only a health risk once it becomes airborne, AHERA does not require asbestos removal unless there is a danger that the dust can be released. In fact, one of the highest risks of mesothelioma is from exposure to airborne asbestos fibers.
Under AHERA, U.S. school districts are required to let parents know of the presence of asbestos in schools and to make the asbestos management plan available to the public. The EPA says routine maintenance, such as the regular cleaning of asbestos tiles, is unlikely to release asbestos fibers and is an important part of maintaining the materials and keeping the particles in place.At the same time, UK education officials are dealing with their own asbestos legacy. A new report from a leading group of asbestos testing and consulting specialists criticizes the government for not doing enough to protect children and teachers from existing asbestos. The report, from the Asbestos Training and Consultancy Association states that, in the 16 schools tested, the asbestos management plans are “not of an acceptable standard… are ineffective and at times dangerous.”

Samira Tawfiq Said Balousha, 36, married with nine children, is a homemaker and a resident of Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Her testimony was given to B’Tselem’s Muhammad Sabah by telephone on 30 December 2008:
My husband and I lived with our children in a three-room asbestos house in Jabaliya refugee camp. The house is next to Imad Aqel Mosque. We had nine children: Tahrir, 17, Iman, 16, Ikram, 14, Samar, 12, Samah, 10, Dunia, 7, Juhar, 4, Muhammad who’s a year and a half and Bara, who’s two weeks old.
Last Saturday [27 December], after the Israeli bombing began and after pieces of asbestos fell from our house because of the bombing of the district-government building, my husband and I took the children and went to my father’s house. We stayed there for one day and then returned home and continued our normal life — I did house work and the girls prepared for their mid-year tests that were to take place during the week.
On Monday [29 December], around 11:50pm, I woke up and heard my husband calling to me: “Samira, Samira, they shelled the mosque, get up and see, and recite the Shahada [Prayer of the dying].” It was dark, and I couldn’t see anything. I recited the Shahada. I felt something heavy choking me and pressing on my body. I was buried under a concrete clock, stones, and sand, and barely managed to move. I succeeded in freeing my hand and pushed aside the things that had fallen on me. I got up and went to look for my children.
I found Bara, my two-week-old daughter. She was alive, even though her bed was buried under the ruins. I saw my husband getting out of the ruins, and I handed Bara to him.
I then went to look for my son Muhammad, who was sleeping next to me. At first, I didn’t see him because of the rubble, but I found him alive under the ruins. I managed to free him, and I gave him to one of the people who came to help clear away the rubble.
In the meantime, I continued to look for my daughters. Their bedroom was covered with blocks of concrete and stones and sand. Other people helped me look for them. I was very weak because I had been injured in the head, and I was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital.
At the hospital, I learned that five of my daughters — Tahrir, Ikram, Samar, Dunia, and Juhar — had been killed, and three were wounded. Muhammad was injured all over his body, mostly in the face.
Israel bombed the mosque next to our house without warning and without thinking about the people who live next to it. Lots of houses in the area were damaged in the blast.
