Q&A: How serious is Pnemonia while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer (seminoma)?
Question by Lucky Mom: How serious is Pnemonia while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer (seminoma)?
My husband was diagnosed on December 7, 2011 with allergies after seeing his doctor for a persistent cough would not go away. When he came home and told me what the doctor said, I told him that he was crazy that he was 50 years old and has never had an alergy ever. Especially in December. Not typical for allergy wheather. After a day of trying the perscribed inhaler for the cough it made him cough so hard he threw up.
I called the doctor the next morning and told him that my husband was worse and over the evening had developed a temperature. The Doctor asked him to come in the next day to see him again and they decided to take an x-ray of his lungs. He gave my husband the results and said he had Pnemonia. He gave him a perscription for antibiotics and said that he would be fine in 7 days. Which would allow him to travel since we had bought and paid for a trip to Hawaii with our family for the holidays.
Two days before the trip I called the doctor and told him that my husband was not getting any better with the antibiotic and was getting nervous that it was so close to the time we were to leave. My husband still had the terrible cough and pain when taking a deap breath. Long story short, he asked my husband to come in the next day and told him that the radiologist notified him that it was a large tumor that was connected to his heart and lung, and it would need to be biopsied to check for cancer. Now we are the night before the trip that we had saved for years to go on. We didn’t know what to do. The kids and I all wanted to cancel but my husband wanted to go. He thought about the possibility of it being cancer and possibly not having the opportunity to go again. We did go and managed to have an ok trip. There was just no getting away from the looming what if factor.
Anyhow, we got home and he they did the biopsy which confirmed seminoma (Testicular Cancer) They started chemo right away. He just finished his last round 2 weeks ago today and for the last 3 of the two weeks was in the hosdpital for sepsis. They believe that is cleared up and he came home yesterday. I called the doctor because he has still had a horriffic cough. His Dr. said that he has Pnemonia and an fungal infection. My question is… Is he still at risk of major complications or possibly death by these infections and if so why did they send him home?
Best answer:
Answer by rachel
he will be at a real risk for complications for some time.my husband died within 10 weeks of finishing chemo and radiotherapy for lung cancer.he got an oral Candida infection, pneumonia [which went undiagnosed] and sepsis.in a study of medicare patients.one of the main causes of death in cancer patients is pneumonia and sepsis.chemotherapy knocks off the immune system and leaves the body vulnerable to infection, frequently pneumonia.it is written in the info sheets on whatever chemo drugs they use that it is a very slight possibility that it may damage the immune system.it is not only a slight possibility though,it happens all the time!

What would be the effects of psilocybin mushrooms while undergoing chemotherapy?
Question by : What would be the effects of psilocybin mushrooms while undergoing chemotherapy?
I have no idea how you would figure something like this out, but a friend of mine has leukemia. We were wondering if taking psilocybin mushrooms would at all effect the chemotherapy she’s currently undergoing.
Best answer:
Answer by midnightmoon
I have no experience with shrooms. They are grown mushrooms, right? If that is the case, he probably should not take them during chemo. Chemo lowers the immune system, and the shroom itself is a fungi, and probably contains bacteria or maybe even chemicals from growing. That would be bad bad bad. (being a leukemia patient, chances are she knows what the term neutropenia means, and what a neutropenic diet is… the shrooms would be in the banned list of foods as part of the neutropenic diet)
In the end…. She should consult her doctor. I know its odd to consult a doctor about taking drugs, but in this case… It is VERY important that she talk to her doctor about it, and that her doctor knows, if she does take them.

What happens when you’re around a person undergoing radiation therapy?
Question by miss behavin: What happens when you’re around a person undergoing radiation therapy?
My 10 month old baby has been around a relative who is undergoing radiation therapy. He has radioactive seeds planted in his prostate. We tried to keep the 3-6 feet distance but there were a few times he was closer than that to my baby. We have been visiting them for three days and we are leaving tomorrow. I’m worried that even this little exposure might have adverse effects on him. Will this type of an exposure affect him badly and what can I do to help reverse the harm?
Best answer:
Answer by Unsure
It is very unlikely that this limited exposure would harm the baby. The type of radiation emitted by permanent seeds does not have a lot of tissue penetration, meaning that passing through the tissues of your relative’s body is usually enough to stop the radiation and distance from the source (the seeds) also plays a role. The biggest risk would be if your child sat in this relative’s lap for periods of time. If it has been a while since the seeds were implanted (many months ago) most of the radiation is long gone.

Q&A: What are the best foods to eat while undergoing chemotherapy?
Question by newwave84: What are the best foods to eat while undergoing chemotherapy?
I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma and have already undergone my first aggressive chemotherapy treatment. It depletes my strength. I go in for round 2 tomorrow. They tell you not to eat undercooked foods and raw fruits and veggies. Is there anyone here who has gone through the same thing who might have any suggestions?
Best answer:
Answer by Bozema
In chemo, the most important thing is to eat foods that are appealing to you since your sense of taste is affected. You should avoid undercooked foods to prevent food poisoning, however my oncologist indicated that salads and fresh fruits and vegetables carefully washed and prepared by me were OK – he was more concerned about foods prepared in restuarants were handing might not be as cautious. Sushi was a big no-no.
Getting adequate iron-rich food is important to keep your hemoglobin count up. Take a multivitamin supplement and if you can, eat red meat and spinach. I ate quite a few steamed vegetables as well, and actually craved broccoli. Spicy foods, smelly foods, onions and garlic were hard to tolerate.
Getting adequate protein is also important. Chicken cooked in simple ways, string cheese and eggs all worked well for me.
Everyone is affected a little differently, but most people prefer blander foods than normal and everyone should focus on getting adequate iron and protein. I would get a copy of my lab results from each chemo session and watched my progress as I went along to make sure I was taking proper care of myself.

Which supplements are good for patients undergoing chemotherapy/?
Question by bmila612: Which supplements are good for patients undergoing chemotherapy/?
My grandfather is currently undergoing chemotherapy for Lung Cancer and we are trying to do everything possible to help him feel comfortable. He often speaks about loss of energy and loss of appetite. My family and I have been trying to incorporate some natural supplements into the little amount of food that he does eat so that he can try to remedy the issues he is dealing with. So far Noni Juice has been a success, but we are on the lookout for more. Can anyone suggest some other options? Those that can be incorporated in smoothies and soups are ideal, because these are the foods he enjoys most. Thank you!
Best answer:
Answer by KM
There are many things you can add to shakes and smoothies or soups to ‘boost’ his energy and make him feel better. Some suggestions are, bee pollen, spirulina, and chlorella. They are all packed with protein and nutrients to help him feel more energetic and just better overall.

How would you prepare oneself before undergoing radiation therapy?
Question by Honeybots: How would you prepare oneself before undergoing radiation therapy?
I will be finishing my 6 chemo therapy and I am scheduled for my radiation therapy and I have no idea what I will have to prepare for myself. Someone suggested that I use suntan lotion before and after treatment . Is that appropriate ?How serious will my burn be ?Is it necessary to have 6 weeks radiation therapy ? What is the after effect if I do not finish it all.
Best answer:
Answer by J B
They do not want stuff on your skin before treatments. You do not need to do anything to prepare except show up on time for your appointment. After your first treatment, they will give you instructions on how to take care of your skin and the “burns” that can occur during radiation treatment. If you do not finish all of your treatment, you run the risk of allowing your cancer to return. Do everything they tell you to ensure the best possible outcome.

Important Nutritional Tips For Mesothelioma Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy.
Important Nutritional Tips For Mesothelioma Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy.
Article by Bello Kamorudeen
Chemotherapy is one of the main treatments that cancer patients can to treat the disease. It involves the use of anticancer drugs to kill the cancer cells, however normal cells are also destroyed in the process.
This destruction of cancer cells leaves the body in a weak state. In addition, chemotherapy has a number of side effects, such as nausea. If cancer patients do not eat properly, they can become malnourished and pass away not from cancer, but from an infection or other illness in their weakened state. These are some tips to improve the nutrition of patients undergoing chemotherapy:
1-. Chemotherapy can cause anorexia{poor appetite} so choose foods that really pack a nutritional punch, so when you do eat, even if it is just a small amount, you are consuming nutritional foods high in protein and calories. Keep healthy snacks with you at all times. You should also consider adding daily multivitamin to boost your diet, but you must discuss this with your doctor before you add them.
2- Unfortunately, chemotherapy can also cause constipation and diarrhea – sometimes both in the same patient. To avoid these problems, drink plenty of fluids and avoid anything with caffeine. You may also want to cut most of the dairy out of your diet. Foods with good soluble fiber, such as mashed potatoes and bananas, can also be added to your diet to help with constipation and diarrhea.
3- One of the best ways to boost your diet during chemotherapy is to add as much protein to your diet as possible. Proteins, such as those found in meat, nuts and beans, can help you feel better during treatment, and can help fight cancer more effectively. Even if you do not care for meat or are dealing with anorexia, there are many ways to add protein to your diet. Here are some great tips for integrating protein whenever possible:
* When making pasta, add a beaten egg at the last second. As you stir, the heat will cook the egg, adding a great source of protein.
* Eat peanut butter with fruit.
* Add extra beans to soups and other dishes.
* Add powdered milk to recipes like muffins, mashed potatoes, and meatloaf.
* Prepare protein drinks and keep them with you all day, so you can get protein even just a sip at a time.
* Nuts are a great protein-enriched snack to carry with you throughout the day.
You can talk to a dietician about more ways to add protein to your diet.
4-In addition, if you’re dealing with anorexia, your should add many calories to your diet to keep up strength. Some of the best ways to do this include:
* Spread butter or margarine on crackers.
* Stir unsweetened whipped cream into mashed potatoes.
* Add honey to cereal or desserts.
* Sprinkle granola into yogurt.
* Choose dried fruits as a healthy snack, and add them to meals or baked goods when possible.
A mesothelioma patient should seek to know as much as possible about the different methods of treating the disease so that they can cooperate maximally with treatment.
