Understanding Cancer using Nature as A Teacher
youtu.be youtu.be youtu.be Cancer’s Break-in Tools Possibly Identified: Nematode Worm Provides Model Of Invasive Cancer ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2009) — A single cell in a 1-millimeter nematode worm is providing valuable new clues into cancer’s deadliest behavior — its ability to put down roots in new tissues after spreading throughout the body. Duke University biologist David Sherwood has spent the last several years studying the mechanics of a single cell in the developing body of a worm called Caenorhabditis elegans. It’s called the anchor cell and one of its jobs is to connect the developing animal’s uterus with its vulva, a crucial step in ensuring the worm’s fertility. To establish this slender connection, the anchor cell must work its way through two layers of basement membrane, a dense, sheet-like barrier structure lining most tissues, including the epithelial cells in humans that are the hosts of many cancers. In a paper appearing online Aug. 17 in the journal Developmental Cell, Sherwood and colleagues describe how the nematode’s anchor cell uses a series of molecular signals to create a stretched opening in the membrane. They believe the process is essentially the same as the one cancer cells use to invade new tissues. Together, these molecules, called integrin and netrin, may be a valuable new target in the efforts to halt cancer’s spread via metastasis. “Metastasis accounts for most of cancer’s lethality,” said Sherwood, who is an assistant professor of …

Understanding Asthma – 360p [Animation]
What is exactly Asthma? Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.Causes, incidence, and risk factors Asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways become tight and the lining of the air passages swells. This reduces the amount of air that can pass by. In sensitive people, asthma symptoms can be triggered by breathing in allergy-causing substances (called allergens or triggers). Common asthma triggers include: 1| Animals (pet hair or dander) 2| Dust 3| Changes in weather (most often cold weather) 4| Chemicals in the air or in food 5| Exercise 6| Mold 7| Pollen 8| Respiratory infections, such as the common cold 9| Strong emotions (stress) 10| Tobacco smoke Symptoms Most people with asthma have attacks separated by symptom-free periods. Some people have long-term shortness of breath with episodes of increased shortness of breath. Either wheezing or a cough may be the main symptom.Asthma attacks can last for minutes to days, and can become dangerous if the airflow is severely restricted. Symptoms include: 1| Cough with or without sputum (phlegm) production. 2| Pulling in of the skin between the ribs when breathing (intercostal retractions). 3|Shortness of breath that gets worse with exercise or activity 4|Wheezing, which: Emergency symptoms: Bluish color to the lips and face Decreased level of alertness, such as …

Results of lung CT – need help with understanding?
Question by : Results of lung CT – need help with understanding?
I was in the ER the other night due to chest pains and had all sorts of tests ran. The only answer I could get out of the ER Doctor was “I’m NOT going to tell you it’s not cancer, come back in 4 weeks for a follow-up” Great care, thanks doc. I am Googling sentences and am nothing short of confused. (Also, I am a 41 year old female whose father past from lung cancer. Have been feeling run down for almost a month)
FINDINGS:
A 1.5-cm focal rounded opacity identified in the inferior aspect of the right upper lobe. A small second 6-mm nodular density is identified in the right lung base anteriorly.
Remainder of the lungs are clear.
Small bullous lesions identified in the super segment left lower lobe.
No pleural or pericardial effusions. Pulmonary arteries are well opacified with contrast. No intraluminal filling defects suspicious pulmonary embolism.
Prominent mediastinal lymph nodes with the largest lymph node identified in the right paratracheal region and measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter.
No hilar lymphadenopathy. No pericardial effusion. Low-attenuation lesion identified within the left lobe of the liver and posterior segment right lobe of the lover most consistent with simple hepatic cyst.
IMPRESSIONS:
1.Focal approximately 1.5cm rounded opacity identified in the inferior aspect of the right upper lobe. This finding most likely represent a rounded area of pneumonia in this young patient. Neoplastic process is not excluded but is felt less likely. Follow-up exam recommended.
2.A 6-mm nodule identified in the right lung anteriorly. This is also nonspecific and can be reevaluated with follow-up exam.
3.Prominent right paratracheal lymph node which is most likely reactive in nature.
4.Simple hepatic cyst.
5.No evidence of pulmonary embolism.
More details:
There is a streak artifact in the mediastinum secondary to contrast within the superior vena cava, and this limits assessment for mediastinal adenopathy.
There are small prevascular lymph nodes and mildly enlarged tracheal lymph nodes.
There is a soft tissue nodule in the right upper lobe which measure 2.2 cm in maximal dimensions and demonstrates surrounding groundglass arrenuation. (Image 181 of series 5)
There is a noncalificed nodule at the anterior right lung base (Image 260 of series 5)
There are hypodensities in the liver which likely represents cysts.
Nodular opacity in the right upper lobe which could represent an inflammatory or neoplastic process.

Answer by abijann
1)Lymph nodes are what become enlarged when we have infections
in the body. The lymph is part of the immune system which helps
remove foreign things like bacteria and virus, etc.
2)The mediastinal is the middle of the chest between the lungs.
They say that they are seeing that your lymph nodes are enlarged
in certain area:
The largest is 1 cm in diameter which is located in the paratracheal region.
(which is in the throat) and there are smaller ones in this area.
LINK: look at number 6 in this picture…it will show you which lymph
node region they are talking about.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paratracheal_lymph_nodes
They do not see any in the area where the nerves and blood vessels
enter the lungs.
They mention that the do see something which is within the upper
vena cava (the main artery that bring blood back into the right part of
the heart) but they are not sure if this has to do with the lymph node
enlargement.
……………………………………………………………………….
They do not see any abnormal amounts of fluid in the pleural (which is the
lining of the lungs) or the heart (pericardial). The arteries in the lungs can
be seen well and there is no evidence of embolism (blood clot)
……………………………………….
They do see a 1.5 cm (0.6 inch) round form in a specific area located in
the lower part of the upper lobe of the right lung. They are suggesting that
they believe it to be pneumonia related. They do not believe that it is
developing into a tumor; though they do not rule it completely out.
(they may be talking about the same nodule which measures 2.2
cm. The groundglass arrenuation is seen when someone has pneumonia
or inflammation of the lung)
LINK: http://www.medcyclopaedia.com/library/topics/volume_v_1/g/ground_glass_attenuation.aspx
They do see another 6 mm Nodular form in the front part of the right lung base.
It is dense but not calified of which they do not know if it is inflammation oriented
or a possible building up of cells (neoplast, tumor).
They also see small round lesions in the upper part of the lower lobe of the left
lung.
…………………………………………………………………
You also have what they “believe to be” liver cysts in the right and left lobe
of the liver. Cysts are usually fluid filled sacs. They do not mention the
size. As long as these stay small, they will cause no problem. They will
probably watch to be sure that they do not enlarge too much. If they
do, they can remove the wall of the cysts and let them drain out.
*************************************************
As you can see, no determination has been made as to what these
things they are seeing actually are. With more testing they will see if
they enlarge in size or change in anyway. This gives them more of
an indication. Also, by using contrast (like an injection of something
that makes things stand out more) or by doing more specialized
testing (like an MRI, etc)…they would be able to tell better. Or they
may do Ct scans over a period of time to help rule things out.
I’m not a medical professional. Only your doctor can diagnose you.
He has all your past, present testing results and also your medical history.
No one test is ever 100% accurate. I hope this information has helped
you some. Best wishes

I would like help in understanding this CT Scan results?
Question by Danette R: I would like help in understanding this CT Scan results?
I have a CT scan of my chest my doctor thinks I may have Sarcoidosis and he is running a lot of test. the CT scan of the chest says on the lung windows, mild emphysematous changes with few bullae scattered are seen and more bullae seen in both apices. No obvious infiltrates or nodules are seen. On bone windows, minimal degenerative changes are seen with spurring( what is this?) On the soft tissue windows nonspecific lymph nodes are seen in axillae pretrachael region. Pulmonary hila are prominent, however they all due to pulmonary arteries although non contrast study limits evaluation. No obvious large lymphadenopathy is seen at this time. In the upper abdomen, the liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenals, and kidneys are remarkable. On the sagittal and coronal reconstructions once again mild emphysematous change is seen. Tracheobronchial tree is patent. Thoracic spine shows degenerative changes and dextroscoliosis. No spondylolisthesis or retrolisthesis is seen.
Now can someone help me understand what the hell does all this mean?

Understanding The Most Common Cat Health Problems
Understanding The Most Common Cat Health Problems
Article by Heidi St. James
Cats, like people also suffer various health problems with most common ailments. Likewise, some are easily prevented and cured while a few are hereditary to the feline. One of the most common health issues that a cat can have are hairballs. Since cats groom themselves by licking their bodies, they tend to swallow their fur in the process. And as they continue to do so, they eventually accumulate enough which forms into a ball that builds in their stomachs.
Another common ailment would be parasitic worms. Roundworms, tapeworms and hookworms and even heartworms are but a few that usually infest these felines. Usual symptoms include but are not limited to, loss of weight, overgrown bellies, a degenerated fur appearance and vomiting. These can easily be treated through the use of proper medication, though it has the potential to cause a serious condition in cats if not dealt with immediately. Cats also experience occasional vomiting.
This can be due to an illness or food that is not digested well by the cat. Diarrhea, on the other hand, is not an ailment in itself but a sign that there is something wrong with the cat which could potentially lead to worse kind of health condition. Urinary Tract-Infections are also included in the list. Bladder ailments are always a possibility to both genders though male felines usually incur a higher percentage of having their life endangered due to the condition.
Fleas on the other hand, which may not be a disease in itself is an ailment which all cats suffer. They feed on a cat’s blood which causes the poor feline to constantly scratch itself eventually leading to self-mutilation or harm. Fleas also are capable of spreading parasites like tapeworm from one cat to another. Furthermore, this will cause a cat to become anemic and more susceptible to other diseases. Ear mites are also a few pests which can endanger a cat’s health since they can irritate a cat enough to have it disfigure its ear due to constant scratching. Older cats on the other hand usually die of kidney diseases. Some studies show that constant feeding of dry meals are potential factors to these poor felines. An increased liquid intake is one of the symptoms.
In addition to the aforementioned cat medical conditions, there is also conjunctivitis which is an inflammation of the eye membranes which tend to hit cats once in a while. Upper respiratory sickness is referred to as cat flue which can be fatal to kittens and immunosuppressed older cats.
FIP or Feline Infectious Peritonities is a kind of corona virus mutation which lies dormant in the intestine of a cat for the whole duration of its lifetime. Cats having this disease usually show symptoms of sneezing, teary eyes, nasal discharge, and occasional diarrhea, loss of weight or malnutrition or even lethargy. Though some recover from its initial infection, a number become carriers.
Based on past studies, this kind of ailment is contracted in environments where there is a huge domestication of cats or an area simply filled with felines. Unusual as it may be, cats also occasionally get a Feline Immunodeficiency Virus or simply Cat AIDS. Like human AIDS, the cat’s immune system is gradually weakened by this virus which increases the chances of chronic diseases to afflict the cat. This is usually transmitted through cat saliva such as one gotten through a cat fight or with any other animal infected with a similar virus. Unfortunately, there is no existing remedy for the disease.
But perhaps one of the most dangerous or fatal disease a feline may contract is the Feline Leukemia Virus. Like human leukemia, it is a cancer in white blood cells. The good news is that there is already a vaccine against it and immunization can greatly lessen the chances of a cat incurring such a virus. It is important however to quarantine the cat and keep other cats from interacting with the afflicted cat.
In addition, there is also what is referred to as “abscess”. This is caused by bacteria which are pressed deep underneath a cat’s thick fur deep into the muscle surfaces through another cat’s bite or scratch. Due to the warm and moist environment enclosed within, abscess develops causing the cat extreme pain and may eventually cause a cat to fall ill. Last but not the least would be tooth decay.
Like humans, cats also suffer tooth decay or toothache and symptoms that a cat is suffering from such may include reluctance to feed or the tendency to drop the food once it tries to eat. This is due to the extreme pain that it experience. At the worse, the cat will stop eating and become malnourished and may eventually die.
These are just few common ailments which cats suffer from and having knowledge about them is really helpful especially if you are a cat lover and determined to maintain the wellness of your pet cat.
