Helping Veterans Exposed To Asbestos in the Military by the Mesothelioma Center
In this video, which is part of a larger interview, retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander Carl Jewett, now executive director of the Veterans Assistance Network, explains how organizations like the Mesothelioma Center are established to help veterans who were exposed to asbestos in the military. If veterans know they were exposed to asbestos while serving in the military, veterans may gain VA benefits for healthcare or for disabilities. Jewett explains that individuals who served in various branches of the military and were exposed to asbestos while serving can find help through resources that focus on mesothelioma veterans. He says veterans may perceive the benefits claims process as complicated, but perception is not reality. In fact, he says, the process simple. The key is for veterans to understand what information is required by the VA. For Navy asbestos claims, for example, veterans can receive instructions that they misinterpret. With help from organizations like the Mesothelioma Center, those instructions can be quite specific, such as: “fill out this form,” “write this summary,” and “bring your DD214 form.” By following specific steps and filing the required documents, Jewett says, veterans pursuing asbestos claims can find out what they are eligible for, how they can best receive the requested benefits and where they can find more information. He continues by stating that veterans from all 50 states and around the world have been helped with asbestos-related …

Spouse Benefits for Mesothelioma Veterans

Veterans concerned about a spouse receiving benefits before and after the veteran dies from an asbestos-related disease may ask the simple question: Can a spouse receive benefits? In this video segment, Carl Jewett answers that question and explains the details. Jewett, a retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander and executive director of the Veterans Assistance Network, initially answers the question by saying, “It depends,” and then follows up with more information. This question is relevant to mesothelioma veterans in addition to veterans interested in filing asbestos claims. The filing process appears difficult, but it is simplified when the veteran or surviving spouse understands exactly what paperwork the VA or other government department requires. According to Jewett, some spouses are entitled to a Dependency Indemnity Compensation (DIC) benefit. This benefit gives a spouse 54 per month if the veteran died from a service-related condition. However, for a surviving spouse to receive DIC compensation, the deceased veteran must have filed for disability; received a disability rating; received disability compensation every month; and have died from that same service-related condition. If all of those things occurred, Jewett says it will be easy to receive DIC compensation. However, the surviving spouse must file a DIC claim and submit documentation that the spouse died of the service-related condition. One misconception of spouses of deceased veterans is that disability …

Navy Veterans Exposed to Asbestos by The Mesothelioma Center

Carl Jewett, retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander and Executive Director of the Veterans Assistance Network, is an expert on Navy asbestos exposure, asbestos on Navy ships and asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma. This video is one portion of a larger interview with Jewett about Navy asbestos issues and veterans’ asbestos exposure concerns, along with general information about asbestos-related diseases. Throughout this portion of the interview, he identifies asbestos as a toxic mineral that was mined and used for its insulating and fire-retardant properties. Jewett explains the dangers of asbestos exposure, which occurs when humans breathe in asbestos fibers. This type of exposure can be dangerous because the fibers, once inhaled, can cause scarring of lung or the linings of the lung. The scarring can result in fibrosis, asbestosis, pleural plaque, mesothelioma, lung cancer and a variety of other health issues. Carl explains that when workers in a factory of asbestos-containing products handle the product for long periods and eventually get sick as a result. Such an instance also can occur through asbestos exposure in the Navy or through environmental exposure like having asbestos-containing products in your home. Continual asbestos exposure can lead to the development of an asbestos related disease like asbestosis and mesothelioma. This was evident as early as in the 1920s and 1930s when companies that dealt with asbestos materials noticed employees getting sick …
Veterans Helping Veterans Exposed To Asbestos By The Mesothelioma Center
After serving in the military, some veterans require assistance for issues like disability claims. In this video segment, retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander Carl Jewett explains how many organizations and resources there are that strive to get help for veterans but only a few of them are staffed by veterans who have experienced similar hardships. As executive director of the Veterans Assistance Network, Jewett helps veterans navigate the confusing Veterans Administration benefits process. Organizations like the Mesothelioma Center provide guidance on a variety of topics that range from veterans and mesothelioma to spouse claims. Much of Jewett’s focus is on veterans’ asbestos exposure, in which he provides guidance about filing claims like Navy asbestos claims. According to Jewett, a number of veteran counselors and similar services are available to veterans, yet they work primarily for the state or service organizations like American Veterans (AMVETS) or Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Many staffers for these groups not veterans but are trained staff or government workers. In the video, Jewett stresses the importance of getting help and advice from those who understand, relate and care about your needs. At the Veterans Assistance Network, it is all veterans helping other veterans. Whether it is serving mesothelioma navy veterans or spouses of veterans who need assistance filing claims, he can help. In addition to helping other veterans with the disability process …
