Q&A: Are there people who can walk but are in a wheel chair 90% of the time?
Question by ?: Are there people who can walk but are in a wheel chair 90% of the time?
My next door neighbor is probably thirty something and lives alone. He’s in a wheel chair all the time. I think I only saw him once out of the wheel chair and it was in the elevator of the apartment building we live in. He was holding on to the railing and breathing really heavily. Are there diseases or disorders where your able to walk but you just stay in a wheel chair most of the time? He doesn’t work so I bet he’s on disability. I just wonder how serious his disability is. Anyone know of anything he could possibly have?

Answer by arch9angel
Yes, I have seen someone like that at this college I go to. He can walk short distances and stand okay, but needs the wheel chair to go any decent distance.

Real News @ RevolutionNews.US — RESEARCHERS AT the University of Birmingham have identified a new form of ecstasy that kills blood cancer cells in a test-tube within 24 hours. When the drug attaches to the cancer it causes the cells to self-destruct. It is a “clean way of destroying the cancer” said John Gordon, professor of cellular immunity at the University of Birmingham. “The cells kill themselves and all the bad parts are naturally removed, so there are less side-effects compared to chemotherapy, for example.” Collaborating with scientists at the University of Western Australia, the Birmingham team identified a version of the ecstasy drug that is 100 times more powerful than the recreational version. The work is published in Investigational New Drugs. The amount of ecstasy needed to treat cancer would be enough to kill a person, so the drug had to be modified. The team had to “redesign the designer drug”, Prof Gordon said. Preliminary work suggests the new modified drug causes fewer nasty side-effects which ecstasy-users experience, including neurotoxicity. “The prospect of being able to target blood cancer with a drug derived from ecstasy is a genuinely exciting proposition,” said Dr David Grant, scientific director of the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, which part-funded the study. The link between ecstasy and cancer was discovered more than six years ago, when Prof Gordon’s group saw the blood cancers were making very similar chemicals to the ones ecstasy …

Why am I able to walk 3 or 4 miles a day after being told I have severe lung disease?
Question by Edward Devere: Why am I able to walk 3 or 4 miles a day after being told I have severe lung disease?
The radiologist’s reading of my latest X-ray says “severe lung disease” but I can walk miles without tiring or feeling out of breath. This puzzles me. I am diagnosed as having COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). When walking upstairs I become short of breath.

will my mom be able to move her left leg or walk again?
Question by : will my mom be able to move her left leg or walk again?
Here is the situation in October around the 5th of October her left leg was giving her problems way before this really happen, She was saying her left leg felt heavy and was getting hard to move my mom is 64yrs old so she was going through DR appointments and they did test and all they did not find anything wrong with the little testing they did, But one day she fell in her room her leg gave out the left leg she had a hard time getting up so me and my sister and brother n law helped her get up, So she started using the walker the rest of the day for balance, But the thing is she was always the stubborn type to go to the doctors even before when her leg ever first acted up, so she was ok the rest of the day until that night her left leg and left arm started going outta of control like moving very fast shaking and then it stopped then she tried to stand up she fell in the hallway, we could not pick her up then cause she was to heavy so we called the ambulance, and they came and got her then the whole night they did blood testing, and x-rays catscans and all to see why her leg was like that, and during this time she could move her left arm as well so they did tests they said they found a 2.7cm closed capsulated tumor on her motor skill part of her brain.
So they rushed her into Brain surgery the next day, They removed it successfully they said it was grinny looking and they took it off to go for testing to see if it was just an infection or if it came from somewhere else, so after surgery she surprised us she remembered the number to call home and all I guess a lot of people don’t remember things like that right afterwards, So she remembered things like nothing happen, so after that surgery she could not move her left arm at all when she could been able to before. And still no left leg movement she has feeling in her leg though you can touch her she feels it your hands are cold she feels it but she can’t move it to walk or anything,
So after all the testing came back we found out she has Stage Four Small Cell Carcinoma Lung Cancer I never heard of that before, she has two tumors on her liver, and on nodgil on her left lung, so it spread ed quickly to the other places the one in her brain was not cancerous though, she was starting to get a weird cough before all this even happen though with her leg she smoked a long while back but she quit, So she stayed in the hospital for a while and now she’s been home on hospice care they gave us a bed, and a lift and accessories she been in the bed since end of October her legs went down they where really swollen she can now move her left arm before she couldn’t
She tried radiation in the hospital it made her hair fall out and they told her if she did chemo she would really feel icky and sick, and she did not want that to happen at all she denied that since they said the type of cancer she has is aggressive and can come right back and not be killed, So she can wiggle her left upper leg a lot now more then usual but she can’t move her toes at all she still has feeling in them, her toes are really big,
But her right leg and arm are perfect you think she can ever walk again? and since she did not take chemo and it’s small cell lung cancer and spreaded how long you think she will have to live for?

Liver Birds Midnight Walk 2010
More than a thousand women took part in a moonlit walk on Liverpools waterfront on Friday May 14th, 2010. The annual Liver Birds Midnight Walk saw hundreds of women take to the citys streets to raise money for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The 9km route started and finished at the Pier Head and took in various city sites. Among those taking part was 22-year-old lung cancer sufferer Gabrielle Kearns, from Melling, and mum-of-six Ann Long, from Formby, who had half of her left lung removed in 2003 after being diagnosed with the disease. Dr Rosemary Gillespie, the charitys chief executive, said; Last year we had more than 800 ladies taking to the citys streets and raised £70000. This year we have smashed our target with the help of all the fabulous women who have signed up to the event. Radio City presenter Claire Simonsen and her roadshow team provided entertainment alongside dancers from Liverpool Samba School. Personal trainers from Greens Gym led a mass warm up ahead of the walk.

Text 100 Sydney – Free to Breathe 2009 Fundraising Walk
Earlier this year we discovered that one of our colleagues in New York was undergoing a battle with lung cancer. To show its support the team in New York took part in Free to Breathe, a fundraising initiative to raise money for lung cancer sufferers. Wanting to show its own support, the Text 100 Sydney team embarked on its own version of ‘Free to Breathe’ with a 5km walk across the Harbour Bridge and into the CBD. Thanks to the generosity of our clients, friends and the journalism community we are able to double our fundraising targets. This video is our person e-card to our colleague Lisa in New York – we hope you get well soon Lisa! Lots of love from Sydney xoxo

New research from a team including several Carnegie scientists demonstrates that a specific small segment of RNA could play a key role in the growth of a type of malignant childhood eye tumor called retinoblastoma. The tumor is associated with mutations of a protein called Rb, or retinoblastoma protein. Dysfunctional Rb is also involved with other types of cancers, including lung, brain, breast and bone. Their work could result in a new therapeutic target for treating this rare form of cancer and potentially other cancers as well.

The impact of industrial accidents on war production, with the resultant loss of manpower, produced demands for more current information. In 1942, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics undertook to collect and publish monthly data on injuries in almost 10000 establishments in industries of particular wartime importance. These were used by government agencies to pinpoint the plants and industries with high accident rates. Several special studies were conducted during the war, including an examination of the effect of long work hours on efficiency, output, absenteeism, and accidents. A study of operations at the Frankford Arsenal near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania l in 1941 showed that, when extended hours required exertion beyond the normal physical strength of the workers, there were more accidents, greater spoilage of material, greater turnover, and decidedly less production in the extended hours than in the regular hours. Further studies were made in 1943 and 1944. The Bureau conducted detailed studies of accidents in the foundry, longshoring, and slaughtering and meatpacking industries. The Bureau’s data were made available to the Department’s Labor Standards Division, and to the Maritime Commission for safety drives (from the bulletin The First Hundred Years of the Bureau of Labor Statistics was published by BLS in 1985 and available at www.bls.gov ). In 1944, the War Production Board reported that industrial accidents killed 37600 workers and injured 210000 permanently and …

Wayzata.com: Sue Bangert 5K Walk for Free to Breathe
Honor Sue B!! Dear Friends & Family, Our Mom, Sue Bangert, was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer last November in 2008. When she was diagnosed, she was in perfect health. She ate well, exercised everyday, and is the queen of “positive mental attitude”. This has come as a total blow to our entire family, but especially to Mom. Throughout her fight no matter how tired, uncomfortable, or in pain she has been, she continues to amaze us with her positive, upbeat outlook on life and never complains while fighting this awful disease. Mom/Sue has been an incredible mother, mentor, sister, leader, wife, co-worker, volunteer, counselor, neighbor, community advocate, and friend to so many people who dearly love her. Words can not describe the amazing impact she has made dedicating her entire life to others. Words can also not describe how surprised and in shock we all are about the current situation. But the good news is we still have time to tell her and show her how much we love and support her. We thought the National Free To Breathe event would be one way we could combine all our efforts towards honoring Mom/Sue and contributing towards a great cause. If you would like to join us for the National Free To Breathe walk to honor Mom/Sue B, we will be meeting at the Muni in Wayzata on Saturday Nov.7th at 11:00 am Registration is .00 and please RSVP to bridgetlackie@yahoo.com. The walk will begin at 11:30 pm All proceeds will go to the National Lung Cancer Partnership non-profit …
