Q&A: Why do global warming deniers continue to slander James Hansen?
Question by Dana1981: Why do global warming deniers continue to slander James Hansen?
Mr Jello and Liberal continually slander James Hansen, claiming that he’s taken bribes from Kerry and Soros to…well, then don’t specify for what purpose. They’re content just to slander James Hansen and leave it at that.
Are global warming deniers so lacking in quality arguments to support their positions that they have to resort to slandering brilliant scientists?
I could spend all day pointing out the flaws in the few skeptic scientists. For example, the fact that Tim Ball lies about his credentials and is really just a geographer, or that Richard Lindzen doesn’t believe that smoking causes lung cancer, but I’d rather discuss scientific evidence. I’d rather pick apart what Tim Ball tries to argue rather than point out that he’s not an expert on the subject, as he claims.
Would global warming deniers rather slander people like Hansen and Gore than discuss scientific evidence, as appears to be the case? Why do they never discuss Hansen’s scientific arguments?
What a shock, Mr Jello continues to slander him.
Bob does an excellent job providing Liberal and Mr Jello with a reality check in his answer here:

What I find interesting is how many fine minds are torched and trashed, ruined and wrecked because “they took oil money”, but yet someone who took money from a “politicization of science” group can remain objective in your mind.
Here’s a group that states in their name that their goal is to politicize science and that’s fine? I guess objective science is dead, that “science” only depends on who or how many believe a statement to make that fact.
How sad. It’s a shame to see the product of today’s school systems.

Why is it that so many skeptical global warming scientists also don’t think that smoking causes lung cancer?
Question by Dana1981: Why is it that so many skeptical global warming scientists also don’t think that smoking causes lung cancer?
Three that come to mind are Seitz, Lindzen, and Singer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Seitz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Lindzen#Views_on_health_risks_of_passive_smoking
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Singer#Publication_on_health_effects_of_tobacco
Seitz and Singer also don’t think that increased UV radiation due to the hole in the ozone layer can be linked to increased skin cancer.
Why do you think these ‘skeptics’ share these beliefs?
For those commenting on the hole in the ozone layer, see my question here:

Insulation Fraud – Global Warming & the Four Deadly Sins

Asthma has reached epidemic levels in school aged children whose young developing lungs are being exposed to respirable synthetic mineral fibers discharged from the air handling systems in their schools. The Government has known this for years which is why Congress has just approved (HR 3021). Billion for GREENING SCHOOLS to reduce ASTHMA and other environmentally linked health hazards while saving school systems billions in Energy costs (enclosed). Our Government does not ACT, it REACTS. I think this song fits Okita well. Even the the song is called “Asthma” by POD and Okita has tuberculosis. Gotta love a song about lung ailments… or not… *coughs*

UV rays are severe in the tropics as a result of global warming heating rooftops how does one overcome dilema
Question by : UV rays are severe in the tropics as a result of global warming heating rooftops how does one overcome dilema
Most homes in the tropics are roofed with clay tile or dangerous asbestos and since of late both material are heating up excessively making the interior of homes equivalent to an incubator or even worse, like a microwave oven as one can feel the radiation within, actually piercing the skin leaving blisters or rupture of the skin in areas of the body exposed to spasms of the radiation of heat. People are painting the rooftops as a remedial measure but doesn’t arrest the problem saisfactorily, would someone come up with an inexpensive practical solution OTHER THAN WETTING WITH WATER
Best answer:
Answer by Bing
Sadly the cheapest way would be to paint the roof tops white…besides that maybe mirrors, just something that would not conduct heat but will reflect “all” the harmful rays.

Liberal Lies: Man-made pollution contributes to global warming, smoking causes lung cancer?
Question by The Rightwing Conservative: Liberal Lies: Man-made pollution contributes to global warming, smoking causes lung cancer?
What else do Liberals lie about? Claiming that the Earth is millions of years old when it’s clearly 6,000 years old. Claiming that dinosaurs & human’s didn’t coexist, when everyone knows that they did because even Sarah Palin said so: http://articles.latimes.com/2008/sep/28/nation/na-palinreligion28
Liberals lie about man-made pollution contributing to global warming, and claim that smoking causes lung cancer.
A lot of Republicans take money from Big Tobacco Lobbyists, so Republicans must fight the Liberal lies that smoking causes lung cancer, when it’s perfectly healthy.
Why do Liberals love lying?

Jay Harman is founder and chairman of PAX Scientific. A serial entrepreneur and inventor, he has taken a hands-on approach to his lifelong fascination with natural fluid systems. PAX designs more efficient industrial equipment such as fans, air conditioners, and mixers based on Harman’s revolutionary concepts. His goal is to show manufacturing industries that more efficient equipment is profitable for both shareholders and the planet. Other successful business ventures included the use of mass production thermoformed plastics in global boat production, medical research on non-invasive technology for measuring blood glucose and other electrolytes, and a business that licensed an award-winning solution for the safe encapsulation of friable asbestos. AboutTEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Are Global Warming deniers also the same people who dont believe cigarettes cause lung cancer?
Question by threegooofs: Are Global Warming deniers also the same people who dont believe cigarettes cause lung cancer?
Same type of argument. Overwhelming scientic consensus (on global warming, on cancer/tobacco link) and one side focuses in on the small number of scientists who disagree.
Yes, you could find vehement tobacco/cancer link deniers in the 80s.
The parallel is almost the same as with Evolution. I wonder how many GW deniers dont believe in Evolution.

Is it a coincidence that global warming “skeptics” make a lot of scientifically questionable claims?
Question by Dana1981: Is it a coincidence that global warming “skeptics” make a lot of scientifically questionable claims?
Roy Spencer is a huge proponent of Intelligent Design (he also claimed the lower atmosphere was cooling until his analysis was proven wrong). Roy Lindzen doesn’t think secondhand smoke causes lung cancer. Neither does Fred Singer, or that CFCs caused the hole in the ozone layer.
An article written by columnist Christopher Booker has recently been cited by “skeptics”. Booker has previously argued that asbestos is “chemically identical to talcum powder” and “poses no measurable risk to health”.
Why is it that these sources of global warming “skepticism” so frequently make such scientifically questionable (or more often, just flat-out wrong) claims?

Is he trying to prove Global Warming w/ these questions?
Question by Katie: Is he trying to prove Global Warming w/ these questions?
Okay, so I was having a mostly friendly conversation with a friend about Obama when it went to Global Warming…go figure lol. I for one don’t believe in it. He came back with questions I think is supposed to prove his point? There below as follows:
I am glad you are concerned about the environment.
I have six questions I’d love to get your thoughts on:
1.) Do you think that second-hand smoke can cause lung cancer or other health problems for non-smokers who inhale the fumes? Do you believe the research from the Tobacco Institute is unbiased, and therefore reliable regarding second-hand smoke?… See More
2.) Do you think that the Clean Air Act, which has helped reduce air pollution significantly in major cities, was a good thing? Or do you think that air pollution is not really a health problem, but rather, an aesthetic/appearance problem primarily?
3.) Do you think that the banned pesticide DDT was unfairly banned, and should be used to improve the health of people worldwide?
4.) Do you think that if asbestos was not banned in the construction of the World Trade Center…many lives would’ve been saved because it would have improved the structural integrity of the twin towers?
5.) Would you celebrate the death of a well-known and highly regarded scientist?
6.) Would you be critical of companies/corporations that have adopted environmentally-friendly practices? For example, Microsoft has abandoned the use of PVC in its packing materials. Good or bad?
BONUS QUESTION: Should we believe everything that lobbyists who are bankrolled by corporate America tell us?
Just curious what you think of the above.
Is this trying to prove his point????
Best answer:
Answer by Dawei
Well, those are all points that many deniers of global warming also tend to agree with. That second hand smoke and DDT are *completely* harmless, that environmental legislation is usually wrong, etc. Obviously these questions don’t have anything to do with global warming, but the correlations that your friend is implying are not entirely baseless. Number 4 seems a bit odd though.
If you’d like to discuss the science of global warming and your reasons for being skeptical, feel free to post another question about that. You’ll get plenty of insightful responses.
