Question by murphy: 1 week ago told have a 5 mm nodule & 3 more three mm in lung.can they be biopsyed yet &-appt 4/10 for consult?
Had chest CT on complaint of chest heaviness while in hospital on unrelated matter.(was admitted for intestinal flu) that’s when nodules found. To primary dr yesterday. said they were too small yet to be tested. Am 65 female on HMO. 2 years ago had friend die lung cancer after complaining to docs for 1year before tested for lung cancer. I live in state where quality health care highly questionable. I am very frightened to put it mildly. Any info and comments greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead, Murphy

A nodule is defined as a relatively round lesion that is less than three centimeters in diameter. A lung nodule is located within the lung itself, not in the airways. A patient with a lung nodule usually experiences no symptoms; the nodule is most often detected on a chest x-ray. More than half of solitary or single nodules within the chest are benign, or non-cancerous, usually due to a previous infection. However, all solitary chest nodules are considered potentially malignant until proven otherwise, and for this a needle biopsy may be required.
A biopsy involves removing a small piece of tissue for examination by a physician. A needle biopsy, sometimes called a needle aspiration, is the easiest way that tissue can be safely removed from the body. The procedure, which is most often performed by a radiologist or interventional radiologist, involves a needle that is inserted through the skin. The needle biopsy may use a syringe or an automated needle to obtain the tissue sample.
Once a nodule is detected, a computed tomography (CT) or positron emission tomography (PET) scan may be performed to help characterize it and to help estimate the likelihood of malignancy. If the CT or PET scan cannot clearly identify positively benign features in the nodule, a needle biopsy may be necessary. When a physician orders a needle biopsy, the nodule is usually believed to be unreachable by other diagnostic techniques, such as bronchoscopy.
You state that all of your nodules are > 3mm, and most needle biopsies are perfomed on nodules larger that 3mm. Your doctor thinks they are too small, which would be contradictory to standards. You don’t say if your primary physician is a pulmonologist. If he is not, you should be referred to a specialist as soon as possible. If you have lung cancer, it is imperative that you be treated agressively. Waiting for a nodule to grow can be a death sentence. Do not wait around for a GP or FP to decide if you need treatment. Demand a referral to a specialist (HMO’s have specialists on their panel) and get those nodules tested as soon as possible. Good luck.

husband wants space, has moved out for a week – is this the end?
Question by : husband wants space, has moved out for a week – is this the end?
I have been married for 3 years now, together for 5 1/2 years. Up until 3weeks ago everything was perfect (or so I thought). It started out with me finding out he had feelings for a mutual friend who came back into our lives 3months ago. He said they didn’t mean anything but if he weren’t married to me they would probably be together – which hurt me. But I understand that he is married not dead, so feelings will come and go. Problem is, he refuses to stop talking to her, he hasn’t seen her one on one since this all came out, but he talks to her everyday. & on the weekends he will see her in a group situation (which I have stopped going to).
Next thing I find out he is so depressed about how we have to have IVF in 4months, we have been on the waiting list for 2 years and now he decides not to go through with it.
Then he tells me that living with me has been hell (I have OCD and Anorexia & Bulimia tendancies) – I have been in treatment for a year and have gotten soo much better, only need treatment for 10 more weeks and I will be recovered. But he doesn’t seem to see that.
I have done everything to be a good wife to him, he is an only child so has always been spoiled and thats another he can’t deal with is the fact that when you get married you don’t have the freedom to do with your money what you want, we have rent & bills to pay.
He keeps saying that if he were 19 again he wouldn’t be having these problems.
Also I should mention I have a Lung disease which is knew about as soon as he met me but apparently I am now too sick for him – I have the mildest form of this lung disease so I dont understand why he is saying this.
Over the past 5 days he hasn’t spoken to the girl he is interested in, which I told him I was happy with, but he has continued to be distant.
And then today he told me he needs space from me so he can sort his head out.
He packed his bags and moved into his parents place, we have set boundaries and will catch up in a week with each other – I helped him pack to show I’m supporting him, but as soon as he drove away I broke down. He is my soul-mate, he is everything to me.
How do I survive the next week in a house all by myself? And is everything he is saying just excuses to get away without him being the bad guy? My parents think he is just too gutless to say that it’s over. I feel as if I’m the only one trying.
Oh and to make matters worse, he leaves today and goes straight round to the birthday dinner of the girl who he has feelings for. I was meant to go but he said he needed space from me so all of my friends are there, and my husband, yet I’m left alone.
What do I do? I’m a good person. Why do horrible things happen to good people?

Answer by Tati
I’m so sorry but yes this sounds like he is gone. He probably is planning to sleep with her tonight to celebrate her birthday. This sounds planned out to me. I don’t know what else to tell you but life can be so unfair. Listen to your parents, they sound like they know what they are talking about. Stay strong, you deserve better!

Quiting cold turkey and angry!!!! (Week 7)
I talk about the most challenging withdrawl symptom during my quit and that is rage. When the emotion anger hits me for no reason I have to hold a certain mind set in order to talk myself out of smoking and maintain my quit. I talk a bit about this mind set. While my mind has been adjusting to an absence of nicotine I have felt like im losing my mind, my personality, and generally out of sorts.

My step mom is having a suspicious lung mass biopsied next week. What is the next step?
Question by Yvonne: My step mom is having a suspicious lung mass biopsied next week. What is the next step?
My step mom had uterine cancer about 10 years ago, before her and my dad met. They did a total hysterectomy, no chemo or radiation. Last spring they (accidentally) found her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes in her groin. She was on chemo but was taken off after 4 months because it was making her blood pressure sky rocket and nothing would hep keep it down. She’s had a few CT scans since coming off of chemo and her doctor noticed a suspicious spot on her lung has been getting bigger. She goes in for an endoscopic biopsy next Tuesday, hoping the can reach it that way but if not will do surgery.
I’ve spent half of my life worrying about my mom and her mets breast cancer and now this is happening. I am not nearly as close to my step mom as I am my own mom but I still care about her. I guess my question is if the biopsy comes back as being malignant, will chemo be an option since she had a bad reaction the first time? What can we expect?
Best answer:
Answer by Q
Wow, I’m so sorry. That’s rough. You might want to join a uterine cancer support group at www.acor.org. You can get info there and talk to people with cancer and their loved ones.
If it’s a metastasis from her uterine cancer, then there might be a chemo she can take. There are a lot of different chemos out there she could potentially have. I don’t know enough about the specifics of what is available. One ey is that she might want to enroll in a drug trial. She needs to be treated by a gynecologic oncologist at a large teaching hospital–they will have the most up-to-date things for her to try. Good luck!

UCLA News Week 9.8.10
The US Border Patrol has reinvented the concept of “illegal immigrant” to mean Mexican immigrant, history professor Kelly Lytle-Hernandez says in today’s UCLA News Week videocast. Drawing on research for her new book, Lytle-Hernandez discusses how the Border Patrol’s role has evolved dramatically since the agency was established in 1924 to control illegal Asian and European immigration. “What the Border Patrol does is they take that abstract thing called the ‘illegal alien’ and they literally bring people to that. They embody this category for us. They define it for us in a social way that we can understand it and we can see it,” Lytle-Hernandez says. “The illegal alien embraces a large category of people. But what the Border Patrol does is they narrow what we understand as the undoucmented immigrant as the Mexican immigrant.” These stories are also featured in this edition of UCLA News Week. Tight chest even after antibiotics and symptoms have been with me for a week after medication?
Question by : Tight chest even after antibiotics and symptoms have been with me for a week after medication?
So i’ve been on a 4 day antibiotic medication prescribed by a doctor (not a specialist) two weeks ago. He suspected that I had a lung infections. After I took the antibiotics I started to feel a little better and my fever wore away. On the 3rd day that he told me to go back if I didn’t heal completely, he did a check up and he told me I was perfectly fine. BUT I still felt that tight chest feeling and even until now, if I avoid breathing hard, I would feel completely normal but when I eat biscuits, my airway seems to tighten a little. My mom thinks i’m completely crazy and the only reason why i’ve not healed completely is because i’ve been worrying too much. I plan on visiting a second opinion but can someone please tell me whats wrong if possible? Thanks.
Best answer:
Answer by manda kelly
If you have no fever or any other signs of infection, you probably are Ok. It would be ideal to follow up with a Chest X-Ray, to be on the safe side. It’s possible what you are feeling now is the tightness of muscles in recovery, still repairing themselves. Lung infections can leave scar tissue, and it can feel different when you are being active. Your body takes time to heal things like that, but usually you will adjust to the change over time. Relax when you notice the tightness, try not to pay to much attention to it and your lungs will start compensating for the other parts of it that are not working so great right now. It’s a good idea to get a second opinion though, just in case. You know your baseline and there is nothing wrong with being proactive about your health. Hope this helps some and good luck:)
