Melanoma report for women >
The number of melanoma cases among young women in the U.S. has risen fast, said the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics as quoted by media reports Monday.
Researchers from the institute looked over more than 20,000 cases of melanoma in young adults aged 15 to 49 from 1973 to 2004.
The results show the number of melanoma cases among the subjects has risen by 50 percent since the year 1980, they said.

Why won’t insurance companies pay for yearly mammograms for women 35+?
Question by ~~Birdy~~: Why won’t insurance companies pay for yearly mammograms for women 35+?
Are they REALLY that expensive??
The alternative is paying for cancer treatments and losing thousands of lives. You have to catch breast cancer VERY EARLY in order to treat it effectively.

No. The alternative is Obama Care where no woman over 50 will get a mammogram at any cost even if you pay for it yourself. Millions and millions will die.

Women have the easier/better life….by far?
Question by : Women have the easier/better life….by far?
The question is quite easily answered by looking at medical facts- womens life expectancy is higher, women get cancer less often, and the cancer is servere (breast cancer doesn’t com close to lung in annual deaths, and prostate cancer is virtually identical) Men have more health problems, sex linked diseases, etc.
drafts, false rape accusations, etc, all prove this point
cluster headaches/kidney stones are far worse then childbirth (especially the cluster headache, known as the “suicide headache”)
Equal is equal…if a women attacks a man’s child, can he hit her in self defense for the child?
menstrat and childbirth? there are FAR worse pains and alignments.

Fine, I read your source.
Congratulations, you found proof of a theme that is similar in both Universal Health Care and Privatized Health Care.
That theme is trying to save money. For private, it means increasing profits. For UHC, it means being able to do more with tax payers money.
But that’s not all, because your source article indicates that the UHC has a mechanism in place where their decisions can be appealed. Can you appeal a treatment choice with your HMO? I didn’t think so.
Of course, a wealthy person in either system could choose to pay for this treatment out of pocket, so once again, your article proves absolutely nothing other than that you are stretching.

What religion prevents women from seeking treatment for breast cancer? And on what grounds?
Question by rachel f: What religion prevents women from seeking treatment for breast cancer? And on what grounds?
“One Saudi woman ignored the cancer growing in her breast because she didn’t want to risk a referral to a male doctor. Another was divorced by her husband on the mere suspicion she had the disease, while a third was dragged away from a mammogram machine because the technicians were men.”
“Breast cancer is the No. 1 killer of women in the United Arab Emirates, according to official statistics, with many dying because the stigma surrounding the disease prevents them from seeking early detection.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071024/ap_on_he_me/saudi_breast_cancer
Guess what religion it is that scares women into living with (and dying of) cancer because treatment might violate “moral” standards — that is, necessitate an examination by a male doctor? (Here’s a hint: it’s an Abrahamic religion, but it’s neither Judaism nor Christianity)
AngelsAndJinns: that’s not culture. How do you explain that the same “culture” can be found in Islamic countries around the world?
If you argument is that Islam imports “culture”, then you are on the right track (it’s not “culture”, though, so much as uniform repression); but if you want to argue that problems like these are cultural NOT religious, you need to explain why these elements of “culture” exist throughout the Muslim world (be it in Europe, the middle east, etc.)
Finally Mrs.B: Just because it’s not the STATE preventing women from seeking treatment, that in no way invalidates the claim that this prevention is religiously motivated; the religious direction simply occurs on an individual or family level, rather than a national level.
shab m and CuteMe: The idea that a woman cannot be alone with a man comes directly from Islamic law. The article says many times that one of the chief reasons that these women do not seek treatment is that they fear (or someone else fears) that they will be alone with a male doctor. This is not cultural; it’s Islamic.
In how many Islamic countries, after all, is it a crime for unrelated women and men to be alone together? Just recently some Muslim fruitcake divorced his wife because she was “alone” with a man — that is to say, she watched a television show hosted by a man while alone. In Pakistan, I believe, a young (unrelated) couple recently caused a massive traffic accident to avoid being caught by police after committing the “crime” of being alone together.
These things come from Islamic law codes, not culture; that’s why many Muslims across the globe believe (and act) the same.

is it true, alcohal is a cancer cause for women?
Question by wanna be burn!: is it true, alcohal is a cancer cause for women?
Ladies, a glass of wine a day may increase your chances of developing cancer.
According to Cancer Research UK, a drink a day causes 7,000 cancer cases – primarily breast cancer – in the United Kingdom each year.
The risk increases with consumption, the information pulled on a million women implies. Overall, alcohol causes 13% of breast, liver, rectum, mouth and throat cancers. They guess that 5,000 breast cancer cases in the UK can be accredited to alcohol consumption.
The study reviewed women who had a low to moderate intake of alcohol: three drinks a day or less. In the seven-year study, available in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a quarter reported consuming no alcohol.
About 70,000 of the women diagnosed with cancer had a pattern connected to alcohol consumption. Having one drink a day can increase the chance of contracting cancer by 6% in women.
Lead author Dr Naomi Allen from the University of Oxford, says that “the findings of this report show quite strongly that even low levels of drinking that were regarded to be safe do increase cancer risk.”
“About 5% of all cancers in the UK are due to drinking something in the order of one alcoholic drink a day.”
She noted that there is bewilderment about the amount that people should drink. Red wine is supposedly good for the heart.
“It is up to individual people to make their own decision. All of us to some extent have to weigh up the risks and take some responsibility for our health,” said Allen.
A Department of Health spokesman said: “We keep our guidance on sensible drinking under review. We currently advise on a lower risk drinking limit and that drinking above this level could be harmful.”
“There is no completely safe level of drinking but this lower level reflects the known risks including breast cancer, which is partly why there is a lower drinking limit for women,” they added.
“We look forward to examining this research in more detail.”
Dr Sarah Cant of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: “We already know that drinking alcohol can increase your risk of breast cancer.”
“This study suggests that for women over 50 even drinking moderate amounts of any type of alcohol can have many health consequences, including a greater chance of developing breast cancer. Around 80% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women aged over 50, so limiting how much you drink is one step you can take to try to reduce your risk of developing the disease,” Cant said.

Swollen Lymph Nodes in Pelvic Area for Women?
Question by : Swollen Lymph Nodes in Pelvic Area for Women?
I’m 19 years of age and about a weeks ago I noticed a lump. I thought it was something that needed me to go to an obgyn, even though I researched where it was located and seemed to be too far down to be a cyst in my ovaries. So I went a few days ago I went and my doctor told me that its my Lymph Node. That they could be swollen and fighting off an infection. The lump is hard, not painful unless I push on it, between the size of a nickle and a quarter, and it does not move. I did some research and can’t really find causes for it to be in my lymph nodes in my pelvic area. I did find causes for it if it were in my throat. All I found as causes were STD’s (Which I got tested and I am clean) and Cancer (Only Cancer that runs in my family is Pancreatic and Lung Cancer. . What else can cause this, info i looked up is confusing because I don’t know which Lymph Node they are talking about. I have an ultra sound tomorrow, vaginally and outside for my pelvic. I did have a cold that I’m still getting over. I also have a kidney stone that hasn’t moved for about a year. No symptoms really. Another site where people were discussing it, people said they still don’t know what it is, and that it switches sides. Just wanna see if anyone has any info. Ultrasound is tomorrow but i meet with my doctor in a week so I’m a bit nervous. Or if there is a site that is simple and only talking about the Lymph Nodes in the Pelvic area so I don’t get confused with what the causes and/or treatments are. Thanks you

Answer by ICEPICK
Very complex question. You have lymph nodes through out your body and they do get tinder or become enlarged when the body is attempting to fight of infections or viruses. It could be a number of things. I had swollen glands in the same area and a few days to a week later, I got P Rosa. There are so many things that you could have. Have you had chicken pox? Well it’s a herpes virus and it stays in your body and can cause other issues in your life. I would not worry too mush about it. Get your tests done and good luck. My P Rosa lasted a week and it was gone. They don’t know what causes it and it was not an STD so what do you do.

About what age range is it most common for women to get breast cancer?
Question by : About what age range is it most common for women to get breast cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by Brenda H
Unless you have the BRCA gene, which increases your risk of breast and ovarian cancer (and prostate cancer in men), your chances of getting breast cancer will simply increase with age. Women over 75 have breast cancer more often then 50 year old women do who have breast cancer more often than 30 year old woman do. You have to start mammograms at age 40, unless a close relative has had breast cancer. If that’s the case you need to tell your doctor so that you can get proper screenings earlier.

Does most women with stage 2a breast cancer always have a recurrence?
Question by .: Does most women with stage 2a breast cancer always have a recurrence?
I know that it is rare for stage 1 breast cancer to come back later and metastasize, but is it for stage 2a breast cancer? Stage 2a means no lymph nodes involved.

Answer by sickofbeingsick
I’m sorry, but your statement is very incorrect. This is from the National Cancer Institute:
Stages of Breast Cancer
Key Points for This Section
After breast cancer has been diagnosed, tests are done to find out if cancer cells have spread within the breast or to other parts of the body.
There are three ways that cancer spreads in the body.
The following stages are used for breast cancer:
Stage 0 (carcinoma in situ)
Stage I
Stage IIA
Stage IIB
Stage IIIA
Stage IIIB
Stage IIIC
Stage IV
After breast cancer has been diagnosed, tests are done to find out if cancer cells have spread within the breast or to other parts of the body.
The process used to find out whether the cancer has spread within the breast or to other parts of the body is called staging. The information gathered from the staging process determines the stage of the disease. It is important to know the stage in order to plan treatment.
There are three ways that cancer spreads in the body.
The three ways that cancer spreads in the body are:
Through tissue. Cancer invades the surrounding normal tissue.
Through the lymph system. Cancer invades the lymph system and travels through the lymph vessels to other places in the body.
Through the blood. Cancer invades the veins and capillaries and travels through the blood to other places in the body.
When cancer cells break away from the primary (original) tumor and travel through the lymph or blood to other places in the body, another (secondary) tumor may form. This process is called metastasis. The secondary (metastatic) tumor is the same type of cancer as the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the bones, the cancer cells in the bones are actually breast cancer cells. The disease is metastatic breast cancer, not bone cancer.
The following stages are used for breast cancer:
Stage 0 (carcinoma in situ)
There are 2 types of breast carcinoma in situ:
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a noninvasive condition in which abnormal cells are found in the lining of a breast duct. The abnormal cells have not spread outside the duct to other tissues in the breast. In some cases, DCIS may become invasive cancer and spread to other tissues, although it is not known at this time how to predict which lesions will become invasive.
Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is a condition in which abnormal cells are found in the lobules of the breast. This condition seldom becomes invasive cancer; however, having lobular carcinoma in situ in one breast increases the risk of developing breast cancer in either breast.
Pea, peanut, walnut, and lime show tumor sizes.
Stage I
In stage I, cancer has formed. The tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and has not spread outside the breast.
Stage IIA
In stage IIA:
no tumor is found in the breast, but cancer is found in the axillary lymph nodes (the lymph nodes under the arm); or
the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and has spread to the axillary lymph nodes; or
the tumor is larger than 2 centimeters but not larger than 5 centimeters and has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes.
So, there is also no concrete evidence that it is “RARE” for stage I breast cancer to “come back” and “metastasize.” When cancer “comes back,” it is called a recurrence. When it has “metastasized,” that means it has spread to another organ. These are two different situations.
There are women who had been dx’d with stage 0 or stage I breast cancer, and leapt to stage IV in the blink of an eye.
You just can’t assume that stage I means a person is in the clear.
Cancer doesn’t play favorites. It may never come back for a woman who was diagnosed originally as a stage IIIb. This is why it is crucial for women to be extreme advocates for themselves and be in tune with their bodies.
By the way, I was diagnosed as a stage IIa/IIb, and I fully intend on NOT having it come back.

Why is a US Govt panel recommending women start getting mammograms?
Question by : Why is a US Govt panel recommending women start getting mammograms?
at age 50, when the National Cancer Institute recomments 40? Who are you more inclined to believe?
Best answer:
Answer by Tastes like chicken
The US Government, there were a series of studies published in Pubmed that found that regular physicals and use of self-exams were effective for most women and that the massive added cost of adding an extra generation of women to the mammogram pool does not result in a significant improvement in clinical outcomes.
Also, you have to remember that NCI is sponsored largely by donations from Oncologists and they are also watching out for the financial well-being of their donors. A lot of the large National Cancer organizations aren’t as forthright or as squeaky clean as you might think.

Lung Cancer in men vs women?
Question by ms.l_thoms: Lung Cancer in men vs women?
Is there any way I can make something scientific argumentative. Here is my thesis;
There are a lot of differences among men and women, their dress, their structure, even their treatment, but are there differences when it comes to the development of a disease? The differences among lung cancer in women compared to lung cancer in men were identified; one common disease, two different species, does it discriminate?
Can I make this work .
Best answer:
Answer by tampasmiles
You might be able to make this work, but I don’t think it will work for lung cancer.
The first link below is to the abstract of an article that looks at lung cancer rates for men and women. They found that women were not at higher risk for lung cancer when comparing women and men with the same smoking history.
You may consider looking at bladder cancer. The rate (if I remember correctly) is about 3 times higher in men than in women.
Take a look at the second link below. It’s for a summary of a recently published study (published this month!) on one possible reason why men have a higher incidence of bladder cancer than women.
If you don’t find what you want in cancer research, try looking at diseases or conditions other than cancer. There are both infectious and non-infectious diseases that do occur more often in one sex than in the other.
I hope this helps!

sorry for the spelling its late and i am tired.
Best answer:
Answer by Dior
Actually they are ‘imortal’ because of thier mutated telemorase (dont know if i spelled that properly). I dont think the individual cells are immortal. The cells reproduce asexually and then eventually die after reproducing, so the cells them selves are not imprtal but if you look at all the cells as a collective being then i guess in that sense its imprtal. Its just reproducing at a very rapid rate because of its mutation thingy so it has produced more cells than the lady had when she was alive. Its pretty cool though, and slightly creepy. Its good that they can use it for cancer research.

Heres the background. I have had bad luck y entire life. ot trying to lay a guilt trip for anyone who reads this. Just giving my back story as to why I am at where I”m at in life.
I’m 28 and still live at home. ::cough cough::
Why?
Well at the age of 22, I enlisted in the NAVY to get kicked out 6 weeks in because my mom made speak to a doctor when I was 10 when dad died of lung cancer because I was doing poorly in school at the time. When I graduated high school, was in an out of college hanging with SIM bad people and my head was not into it and was not sure what I wanted to do in life and my job status was poor as I was moving from job to job.
When I got released from the NAVY, I went into a depression and inferiority stage. I got fat and out of shape. I worked at a movie theatre and also attended college. At 24, got my record expunged from my marijuana charge back when I was 18. I’ve been a criminal justice student ever since. I am almost done obtaining my associates. Also, at 24, I started working out again getting out of my year and a half laziness. At 26, I said good bye to fat boy and have been in good shape ever since. I have worked at UPS=Under Payed Slaves for almost four years making not so good money but still pay room and board and get ridiculed by society. I might get ridiculed by you to. But hey, that’s what might happen as I put myself on the spot on yahoo Lil. I have goals and ambitions. Things look bad now as for my financial status and living arrangements. This is why I never had a girlfriend in my life.
Well what do you think of all this?
Just curious.
Best answer:
Answer by Coffee
I don’t date druggies or people with criminal charges. I’d give you a 5 for looks. I’d be freaked out you never had a girlfriend at 28.
I’m sure you’ll find someone when you get your life together. I just wouldn’t if it were me.
