What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
Question by : What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
What is the risk to nurses working in the cancer field (oncology) due to their proximity to cancer causing drugs and radiation and chemotherapy? I am hearing stories of many oncology nurses loosing their hair?
Best answer:
Answer by Don’t Call Me Crazy
Cancer causing drugs? I’m sure you mean drugs used in treating cancer. You can check the Material Safety Data Sheet (they should be on file in human resources with the occupational safety representative) to determine the risk of exposure to those chemicals or chemical compounds. As far as exposure to radiation? There is a test to determine whether you have been exposed to radiation and to what degree, though I doubt it would be necessary as long as established procedures are followed at the hospital.

Asbestos Exposure and Disease in Iron Manufacture 1979 Working For Your Life LOHP
Wire insulated with felted asbestos was used in high-temperature and rugged applications from the 1920s. Wire of this type, made with chrysotile asbestos, was sold by General Electric under the trade name “Deltabeston.” In 1942, a General Electric manager described controlling asbestos published by the Pennsylvania Occupational Disease Prevention Bulletin No. 93: Exhausting asbestos fiber and dust in wire insulation manufacture (available at www.egilman.com . This 1942 document says “The use of asbestos fiber in the manufacture of insulated wire usually introduces a dust control problem … includes a complete program of control not only the essential exhausting and collecting equipment for controlling the asbestos fly and dust at its source [and] a routine inspection and maintenance of all systems, a periodic check of air conditions, thorough physical exam of all new employees and re-examination periodically for all employees.” Unfortunately these precaution appear to have not been applied at this appliance manufacturing plant, even decades later. Semiconductor Industry Workers Ask for Chemical Information 1979 Working For Your Life LOHP
This clip is from the late 1970s in the early days of the semiconductors industry and before workers had the right to know what chemicals they worked with and were exposed to on the job.. Due to rapid changes in this industry, manufacturing processes and their associated hazards may change completely every few years. These changes make hazard assessments more difficult to complete and require that they be conducted more often. Common hazards may include exposure to solvents, acid and caustic solutions, toxic metals, and radiation. For a look at the hazards from the late 1990s, read the article Where the Chips Fall at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov . For current information, go to OSHA’s website at www.osha.gov This is from the wonderful 1979 film, Working for Your Life (58 minutes, Labor Occupational Health Program) explores the health and safety conditions of America’s working women by examining the hazards and demands they face in their workplaces. Andrea Hricko and Ken Light, working for LOHP at the time, created this important documentary film. The film is based on the 1976 handbook – Working for Your Life: A Woman’s Guide to Job Health Hazards, by Andrea Hricko with Melanie Brunt. A joint publication of Labor Occupational Health Program and Public Citizen’s Health Research Group This handbook is available on the internet at content.cdlib.org . Filmed in over 40 workplaces, this film highlights occupations that are both traditional ones for women (such as clerical and hospital …

How do I show support for my child’s daycare provider AND ask if she still plans to continue working?
Question by frankie: How do I show support for my child’s daycare provider AND ask if she still plans to continue working?
My home daycare provider’s husband was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer last week. It is a very small center with only 4 young children. My daughter (1year old) has been under this woman’s care for the last 9 months and her husband is retired so while he doesn’t help care for the children he does interact with them quiet a bit. I wanted to do something nice but I am at a loss for what would be appropriate. This woman does an excellent job with my daughter and I am assuming that any day she will be cancelling our contract to take care of her husband’s medical needs. I don’t want to seem insensitive and bluntly ask if she plans to continue to work but I need to know to arrange childcare. How long would you wait to ask what the family’s plans are? Would you do something nice to show support?
Best answer:
Answer by Mallory
Maybe she will still continue to work? Medical bills can get expensive.
I’m sure she will let you know if she is planning to close her daycare. It is her business and she is a professional. She wouldn’t just leave you high and dry after paying her for 9 months.

Is D.A.R.E working to prevent drug abuse in teens or is it just a waste of tax dollers?
Question by Dbl-A-ron: Is D.A.R.E working to prevent drug abuse in teens or is it just a waste of tax dollers?
D.A.R.E has been around for about 20 years, is it working to prevent drug use in the youth of America? I’m not sure it is, seeing that the number of drugs being used hasnt decreased in decades. Why are we paying for a program that isn’t working? D.A.R.E uses scare tactics when teaching about drugs. I remember hearing that marijuana causes severe brain damage, but studies show this to be false. Also it cause lung cancer, recent studies have also shown this so called “fact” to be false. Why are we allowing these programs to lie to the youth?
Best answer:
Answer by Keiser
waste of tax dollars. The school system think that by allowing for children to experience these types of programs that they will be able to not get hooked onto drugs…they are wrong.

Deadliest job in America: Working on cell phone towers
www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org Next time you can’t get a cell phone signal in the middle of town, put your problem in perspective: New figures show that the deadliest job in America now goes to the men and women who construct, upgrade, and repair cell phone towers. According to a story in this week’s RCR Wireless News (no online link yet), building and climbing towers (which can be hundreds of feet tall) is more dangerous than ranching, fishing, logging, and even ironworking. The fatality rate is currently 183.6 deaths per 100000 workers: Five tower workers died during one 12-day span earlier this year alone. 18 tower workers died on the job in 2006. The cause for the runup in tower worker deaths isn’t completely clear, but it’s likely a combination of careless working practices (workers not using safety gear 100 percent of the time, or not using it correctly) and network operators pushing to build out and upgrade their networks too quickly. Hard to blame carriers for wanting to get faster networks up and running, but not at the cost of human life. (RCR is careful to note that the investigation into the rise in fatalities is too early to attribute to any specific source.) Oddly, a loophole in OSHA rules may make it difficult for changes to happen quickly: Towers are often constructed by small contractors instead of the carriers or the owners of the towers. Since the carrier isn’t on site during the construction of the tower, the contractor …

Will I get lung cancer or other illness by working at a Chinese restaurant?
Question by westernshippers: Will I get lung cancer or other illness by working at a Chinese restaurant?
I work at a Chinese restaurant 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, as a cook, and I cook behind the wok most of the time, and I see my surrounding stuff, such as the counter, food container, my cup, etc, would get greasy after a while(maybe couple days), there are a lot of oil involved in the cooking, so I thought it probably gets heated and then evaporated into the surrounding, so I figure I must have breathed in a lot of grease, into my lung, and I’m worried if I could get lung cancer or other bad stuff, or will my body get rid of the grease by itself, hence it is not harmful at all? Because I heard people that works at coal mine will breathe in a lot of tar, and they are very likely to get cancer, what about me?
Best answer:
Answer by vara prasada rao
Appreciable in caring yourself. Why don’t you cut down the hours of work. If you are such essential, you can swift to another work. Minimum hours of work for any employment is only 6 hours. Volatile fumes, oils and coal tar most of them bears pyrolignous acid which is not good for breath. Go to parks etc., to change of air in other time from profession. Try to limit the working hours. Demand some better professional safe guards such as exist fans etc., at kitchen from your employer. Get aid from labour authorities for better employment protections as available to you by law.

Q&A: Question about breast cancer treatment and working?
Question by VCL: Question about breast cancer treatment and working?
I am a nurse who works in a General surgery and Breast Clinic. I see patients before and after surgery, including patients who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Now, I find myself to be one of them. I am currently taking chemo for my breast cancer and will be losing my hair in the next couple of weeks. I think I am prepared for it. I’ve bought a wig and have a collection of caps, scarves and hats. At first, I planned on wearing my wig on the days I am working, but I’ve had a lot of people tell me that wigs can get pretty hot to wear, and with Spring here and Summer coming…. I have been re-thinking that decision. I will never go out in public with a bald head, but am planning on always wearing at least a cap. I am curious about what people really think about going in to see a doctor and have the nurse who checks you in wearing a cap or scarf to cover a bald head? Would you be concerned about having a “sick” nurse take care of you? One of my co-workers said she thought that my breast patients especially would probably really respect me. But on the other hand, if they are there to be told about a new diagnosis of breast cancer, would it make them feel worse to see a nurse and be reminded that they too, will loose their hair going through the chemotherapy?
Thanks for your time and thoughts to answer my question.

Actually, if anything it would probably make you feel a little more at ease. Knowing that the person treating you knows exactly what you will be going through.

Patricia Gallagher on Saskatchewan Working Women
Patsy Gallagher talks about her involvment in the left and with SWW. Remembering Patsy Gallagher By Lorne Brown Regina Patsy Gallagher 1939-2006 The labour and socialist movements in our country suffered a grave loss when Patricia (Patsy) Gallagher died on June 19, 2006, of complications after surgery for lung cancer. She was only 66. Patsy played a major role in many of the political and social struggles of her lifetime. She was born in Saskatchewan to a working-class family in a cultural milieu rare in Canada today. It was mainly a socialist culture and some of Patsy’s relatives were Communists. It was in this atmosphere that Patsy developed a solid class and political outlook, which guided her throughout her life. Patsy was active in many of the progressive political causes of the 1960s, including the nuclear disarmament movement and the peace movement. In the mid-1960s she worked with the students’ union and the library at what was then the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan. While there she was also involved in forming a CUPE local. It was her work with the students that led Patsy to work with the Canadian Union of Students (CUS) in Ottawa at the end of the decade. It was the peak of the radical student movement in Canada, then, and Patsy’s political background and experience made her much more sophisticated than most student leaders of the day. Like many of us, Patsy was also active in the New Democratic Youth and the NDP. This activity included work …

I’m guessing a month but you don’t need guesses. You need facts that should be available by asking someone on his treatment team. Do you have a facilitator? If so, ask that person. A Nurse Practitioner on the team is also a good resource. Never be afraid to ask them questions.

Construction Workers Recall Working Around Asbestos before 1980 New York City Schools
This is clipped from a 1978 film which provided an explanation of asbestos, the dangers it poses to our health, and the importance of precautionary measures to prevent exposure. The film was used to inform workers, contractors, school systems, and general audiences of techniques for solving asbestos removal problems, some precautionary measures for workers, and the use of personal protective equipment. A booklet was also developed by Battelle Laboratories and New York City schools, in cooperation with the Labor Department’sOccupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Cancer Institute-the funding agency for the project. The booklet “Asbestos Abatement/ Control Guidance Manual” was designed as a technical aid for specification writers, mechanics, inspectors, and designers who work on asbestos related projects. It covers such areas as guidelines for identification and location of materials that contain asbestos, asbestos abatement and control methods, work and inspection procedures, personal protective equipment, reporting procedures, and a number of do’s and don’ts to be followed while working on asbestos removal projects. During the 1980s, Congress passed several laws and EPA enacted regulations designed to govern the use of asbestos and better protect the public. In 1986, the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) was signed into law as Title II of the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA …

Your question does not make sense. Are you saying working on cures for cancer, disease, etc, is “micromanaging death”?
Ok, well isn’t working on cures for cancer, disease, etc, also a way of trying to stop death (or at least postpone it)? If not, what do you think we should do to try to stop death instead? I am puzzled.
