Question by Bullhead City Guitar Teacher: my father-in law is 64 and has had copd for the past 10 years badly and has been on oxygen?
How can he apply for a lung transplant? He smokes and I know he will have to quit, but for how long before the transplant would take place does he have to quit. I want him to live. We live in Kingman, Arizona. How do we apply for the transplant. Thank you anybody that can help us out.

His lung specialist would have to refer him to a transplant center for an evaluation, which is the first step towards seeing if he would be a good candidate.

I do not know the rules regarding smoking and transplants; I do know that anyone who is actively smoking cannot receive a lung transplant. This is something that could be answered by the lung specialist. Or you may be able to find a Facebook group for lung transplant recipients and people waiting for a lung transplant. (I’m on a page for kidney/pancreas reciipents, which is what I received). You might also want to look up the following websites:

Question by HELP: My boyfriend of 1 1/2 years started having these “episodes” about a 1 1/2 years ago shortly?
after he began dating me. These are what hes goes through

*cloudy thought
*mucus in the nostril (it makes it hard for him to breath sometimes)
*chest pains
*stomach pains
*vision ( he tells me it feels like hes going to go blind but it comes back and then feels like he will go blind again)
* he cant sleep when hes having this and although he tries so hard to sleep he cant while hes having these episodes
* headache
*numbness in the one arm or fingers
*numbness in leg

we have gone to the hospital they don’t know what it is
when he was born they found TB scars on his lungs but the hospital checked for that
he used to do pool construction
he also used to go into a abandoned mental institution that has asbestos in it i thought maybe it was that but he did this years and years ago
his mother did have a drug problem when he was a baby but he hasn’t suffered anything
hes 22 years old
he tells me he would rather die because he feels this intense pain in his stomach almost daily.
PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE!

he should go see a cardiologist. some of symptoms his is having , are not good i would recommend that you take him to see one or at least another doctor.

I am 41 years old with left sided breast pain. The pain I have is constant,?

I had a partial hysterectomy 5 years ago. I have had this pain for one year. My doctor sent me to my first ma mo 1 year ago this past April. When I had that mammogram they thought there was an abnormal growth under my nipple. When they investigated it further via ultrasound it showed nothing. They said it must be a birthmark.(This was all regarding my left breast)

I went for another mammogram this past April (yearly visit) this time they said a lesion or spot showed up in one film this time on my right breast. After having an ultrasound on this breast they said it showed nothing but that they wanted me to come back for a diagnostic ma mo on this breast again. I told them I was continuing to have breast pain in my other breast (left) they said they saw nothing on my mammogram for that breast.

Here we are now October…I have the diagnostic mammogram scheduled this coming week. I am going to a new breast center (hoping for a second opinion)
My Doctors office called me Friday she wants to see me today for my breast pain. Anyone have any advise?

My family history of breast problems and cancer: Grandmother Breast Cancer (died from), My maternal Aunt gets cysts in breast from time to time and has to have them drained, Father lung cancer (died from,was small cell) Grandfather (fathers side) Colon Cancer (died from small cell)

Please please listen to me, get another opinion from an Oncologist, not just any Dr. You are at the age that with a family history, nothing should be just dismissed. I’m telling you, if I hadn’t gotten a second opinion from an Oncologist, I wouldn’t be here today to warn you. Good luck

EDIT By the way, do not listen to any one who says pain is not a factor. It’s bull and it can happen, I had very sharp pain as did 2 of my sisters and 2 of my nieces. Most Dr’s dismiss it and will tell you that pain is not a factor but I really wish they would look into it more. True, that pain from breast cancer doesn’t usually happens, but it can and does.

….. does that mean a smoker should wait until they are at least 80 to quit smoking?

My grandmother is having a biopsy for lung cancer, she quit smoking 9 years ago. While reading up on lung cancer, I found this stat. I know it’s not a joking matter but that is a scary stat. I mean, if a 30 year old quits smoking, shouldn’t they start to get nervous in 8 or 9 years?

I know, 60 is greater than 40. That 8-9 year thing is what gets me.
Okay, while looking for that stat above, I found this one so nevermind this question. This is promising. B’s mom…. READ UP while you are still young, lol. : )

Absolutely not. There are still a million other things that can be affected from somebody smoking. If somebody wants to quit, the sooner they do, the better.

Both my grandparents died from lung cancer. im 18 years old and have been smoking since i was 16 but i just quit 3 weeks ago. I also started working out and running. I however get sharp pains in my chest when i breath in and sometimes randomly get weird feelings in my chest area when i breath in too. Should i be worried about lung cancer?

You are probably just out of shape, since you just started working out AND just quit smoking – the chemicals do different things in your lungs, so they’re adjusting to the absence of smoke. I’d say as long as the discomfort is only when you’ve been exercising, don’t worry at all, just work toward getting in shape gradually. If it’s more frequent than that, you should probably check with your doctor – not necessarily because it’s cancer, but because there are other things that could cause you to feel poorly and the dr. can help you figure out what the problem is.

There was a movie that came out a year ago or so and told the story about scientists discovering a cure for cancer which was never used or made public for monetary reasons ( the actual cancer business brings money). Does anyone klnow the title of the film? Thanks a lot!

He has been smoking for over 35 years?

It’s my dad.. I’m always worrying about him. He told me he started smoking at around 13 and he’s past 50 now. His dad died 2 years ago of lung cancer from smoking and all my aunts and uncles are living but are having breathing problems.
My dad is always coughing (smoker’s cough) and i feel saddened that he did this to himself. In the winter he stops because he hates the cold like me, but in the summer he drinks and smokes when he sees his friends (they are all heavy drinkers/smokers).
He said he has 7 a day now and that’s him cutting back.

I’ve tried everything to get him to stop, i even put a picture of our family in the pack. I dipped his cigs in vinigar (didn’t work), i’ve even stolen them and thrown them out. He has plans for his future and i want him to last that long.
I can easily cry whenever i think about it.. i really want him to stop.. years ago i wrote him a poem and an essay. He knows it’s bad, he’s tried so hard to stop.

What do i do? How did you quit?

I am a parent and I smoke. My kids are a lot like you. The truth is he will stop when he is ready. There is nothing you can do to make him stop. He has to make that decision on his own. Keep talking to him honey and maybe he will be guilt-ed into at least trying harder to quit. Eventually you may get through to him.

Two chemicals known to cause cancer in babies remain in Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo sold in the U.S, even though the company already makes versions without them in other countries. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has unsuccessfully been urging the world’s largest health care company for 2 1/2 years to remove the cancer-causing chemicals (dioxane and quaternium-15) from Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Johnson & Johnson said it is reducing or gradually phasing out the chemicals, but it would take two more years to do so. That would be 4 1/2 years from the time it was discovered by Johnson & Johnson.

According to a report, obtained by The Associated Press, one of the suspect chemicals, quaternium-15, is a preservative that works by releasing formaldehyde. Formaldehyde, used as an embalming fluid, was declared a known human carcinogen this past June by the U.S. National Toxicology Program.

Formaldehyde is also a skin, eye and respiratory irritant, and Quaternium-15 is still an ingredient in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo sold in the U.S., Canada, China, Indonesia and Australia, but research this summer found it’s not in the same product sold in at least eight other countries, from the U.K. and Denmark to Japan and South Africa.

According to Analytical Sciences LLC of Petaluma, Calif., 1,4-dioxane was contained in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, Oatmeal Baby Wash, Moisture Care Baby Wash and Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash. Analytical Sciences also tested multiple Johnson & Johnson baby product samples from the U.S. finding the chemicals in many of them. Consumer groups in South Africa, Sweden and Japan stated that quaternium-15 was not being used in products in their countries.

There is evidence that formaldehyde is associated with nose, lung and blood cancers such as leukemia. An infant’s scalp is more permeable than an adult’s, so exposure to the chemicals cause more harm for babies than adults. To expose a child, during a very vulnerable period of development, when the effect is even greater, and at a time when Johnson & Johnson knows of its dangers, it still intends to take two more years before it stops using those chemicals in its products.

Do we need less governmental regulation, so that corporations do not have to go to the trouble of making products safe? According to Republican legislators, we do need less regulation, because it cuts into the profit margin.

maybe there wasnt enough research done to prove that the level of the chemicals were high enoough to cause harm, if there were just trace amounts that were unharmful to babies then they wouldnt have had to remove it. There is radiation all through our houses and that can cause cancer and death but it oesnt effect us because the levels are so low, also with products like that they have to go through legal issues before they can change their product which can cause the process to take a little longer than we would have liked x

I am 22year old male and i have been smoking smoking for 4 years as one or two cigarettes a night. These days i am into little depression that i could get throat or lung cancer due to this! i do not know why i feel this though there is nothing wrong with my physical health yet. I just enjoy having one ,at least , after dinner and i do not want to quit. I know there is chance of getting this lethal disease but can somebody clarify it more with % that how much i am likely to have cancer or any other survey/report regarding that. Moreover nobody had this disease in my family thus family history is also clear. Also how to detect throat cancer with symptoms within its initial stages? Please help me to get out of this tension. Answers with authentic references will be read by heart. Thanks

I have had this mild shortness of breath problem for the last 1.5 half year, but it comes and goes. Unfortunatelly, the last month I coughed up a small amount of blood several times , have had a strange evening fever several times although a flu has been ruled out, bone pain and severe weight loss/loss of appetite through this last month.
I have read a lot online about lung cancer, so my symptoms made me very concerned. I am going to have a chest x-ray in the following days, but any answer would be welcome, as I really need to calm down.

I never really smoked heavily, I started at 16, but not much more than 2cigarettes/day until the age 18-22 where I smoked a bit heavier. Nevertheless, I calculated a bit more than 2 pack years using the “formula”. I have been smoke-free for over 10 months now. I am ashamed about my stupidity…

you didn’t say what age you starting smoking heavily

lung cancer due to smoking would be extremely rare at your age (but not impossible)

it usually takes several decades for “it” to get ya

My dad has been smoking for 33 years now and I wanna know in how much danger he is? details below?

My dad has 33 years smoking added up since he quit for a total of 2 years and after that it has been non-stop one pack a day. Regardless of all this he is really fit and eats extremely healthy foods such as onions and garlic which help the lungs and arteries but till some point. He is 53 at the moment, he is still fit and has a lot of muscle but according to the doctor he has 1 lesion on his lung, intoxicated liver, his heart is damaged( i don’t know how though) and he produces almost no testosterone.

So, I wasn’t worried at all till I started hearing his coughs coming from his room since he rarely ever coughs in public and I am creeped out by the way he is coughing so, how long do you guys think he has to live? in what dangers is he at the moment? please I’d really appreciate answers even though I know its hard to tell without examining him first but your opinion helps.

Honestly I don’t think anyone here can tell you how long he has to live. Even a doctor could be off on that to be honest. He is in a lot of danger it sounds, with the liver, heart and the lesion on his lung. I’m sorry that your dad is such an addict, but if he knows what it’s doing to himself then he is bringing his own death.

Blood Test Finds Cancer Two Years Before Scans

Using just a few drops of blood, researchers have found that they could detect signs of lung cancer in patients two years before their tumors were visible using state-of-the-art body scans. “What that means is that we may be on the verge of developing a blood test to detect lung cancer in it’s earliest stages” said Dr. Carlo Croce, Director of the Human Cancer Genetics program at Ohio Sate’s James Cancer Hospital. Croce and his team discovered that molecules in the blood, known as microRNA, develop certain characteristic patterns when lung cancer first begins to form – and long before there are any visible signs of trouble. “The tumor is there, but it’s very small” said Croce, “it cannot be detected by conventional means but can be detected by looking at microRNA.”

Two chemicals known to cause cancer in babies remain in Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo sold in the U.S, even though the company already makes versions without them in other countries. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has unsuccessfully been urging the world’s largest health care company for 2 1/2 years to remove the cancer-causing chemicals (dioxane and quaternium-15) from Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Johnson & Johnson said it is reducing or gradually phasing out the chemicals, but it would take two more years to do so. That would be 4 1/2 years from the time it was discovered by Johnson & Johnson.

According to a report, obtained by The Associated Press, one of the suspect chemicals, quaternium-15, is a preservative that works by releasing formaldehyde. Formaldehyde, used as an embalming fluid, was declared a known human carcinogen this past June by the U.S. National Toxicology Program.

Formaldehyde is also a skin, eye and respiratory irritant, and Quaternium-15 is still an ingredient in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo sold in the U.S., Canada, China, Indonesia and Australia, but research this summer found it’s not in the same product sold in at least eight other countries, from the U.K. and Denmark to Japan and South Africa.

According to Analytical Sciences LLC of Petaluma, Calif., 1,4-dioxane was contained in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, Oatmeal Baby Wash, Moisture Care Baby Wash and Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash. Analytical Sciences also tested multiple Johnson & Johnson baby product samples from the U.S. finding the chemicals in many of them. Consumer groups in South Africa, Sweden and Japan stated that quaternium-15 was not being used in products in their countries.

There is evidence that formaldehyde is associated with nose, lung and blood cancers such as leukemia. An infant’s scalp is more permeable than an adult’s, so exposure to the chemicals cause more harm for babies than adults. To expose a child, during a very vulnerable period of development, when the effect is even greater, and at a time when Johnson & Johnson knows of its dangers, it still intends to take two more years before it stops using those chemicals in its products.

Do we need less governmental regulation, so that corporations do not have to go to the trouble of making products safe? According to Republican legislators, we do need less regulation, because it cuts into the profit margin.
